She made sure she understood my vision before starting the cut, but also suggested fantastic edits that made my hair look fuller than I thought it could! Alright, so I got booked with a younger stylist who wasn't trained on men's service. I could tell she was lost and I really should have hit eject before she started, but she made a mess of my hair. I didn't feel like seeing a 20 year old girl cry that evening though so I just paid and left with making a fuss. I'm still going to keep their star average up though because of how they handled it when i reached out after. I know the problem was the their booking system was configured wrong and matched me with someone who couldn't do it. They were nice, gave me a refund and it and promised to fix the software configuration. I wasn't going anywhere for the next couple weeks anyway. I'm sure the kid knows to just say "sorry, I can't do men's hair" next time. I don't have API access but trust her JSON object no longer returns 'mens' and they're not using XML for anything either. I was very happy with my experience at Spruce. Booking online was very easy, I actually had to wait to make an appointment because all of my options were too soon (I was waiting for a day off!) I booked Kait based on the quoted price online (different stylist have different levels that affect their pricing) and the fact that I had seen a positive review for her work on yelp. (Ps. the quoted price ended up being the price I paid :)) Kait was friendly and knowledgeable. She asked a lot of questions and looked at the pictures I provided. At the time I had dark blonde hair to about the middle of my back and I wanted to switch to an auburn, collar bone length layered cut. I knew going into it that some stylists are not comfortable going from that light to a deep red but she did some research and said she could make it work. Spoiler alert...she totally did! I'm not usually one to talk while in the chair but she made me feel completely comfortable...she made small talk but seemed to be okay with silence as well, which I truly appreciate. Inside the salon was very clean with lots of plants. Favorite thing...the chair where they wash your hair!!! I want one for my house! Worst curly cut ever, worst cut ever period. I booked with Katelyn because she was an option for a dry curly cut and mid cut she says she's not a curl expert when I ask her what my curl type is. Then why are you an option for a curly cut? She had the "curl expert" try to fix her mess and she was no better. Then she has the nerve to ask if she can give me a hug after I was in tears. No thanks. Hopefully the new salon I'm going to today can fix this mess. And yes she did offer to fix it but at this point I have about three inches of hair I wanted to save for someone else to try to salvage. She seemed more concerned about pushing this line of hair care products she was using on my hair then she crappy cut I was getting. I've been here a couple times before and previously had perfect experiences. Today I went in for a maintenance trim with Brandon. I feel like he didn't pay much attention to my haircut, didn't ask about things like shape in the back where to add layers, etc. He also didn't apply any products to my hair after washing to prep for the blow dry, which I found odd. His technique with the blow dry was off- fumbling through sections, either too little or too much tension on the hair, lots of pulling and tugging. As I was leaving the salon, I felt like my roots were still a little wet. I wouldn't recommend him to women looking for a haircut and blow dry. His expertise may be in other things. read more

My wife found Spruce Hair on Yelp after searching for a salon near our Chapel Hill home. She looked at the high ratings, glowing reviews, and Spruce's website and liked what she saw. She called and booked an appointment based on their availability to accommodate her schedule, indifferent of who would be her stylist. She ended up seeing Destiny M and was happy with the experience. My wife received a text upon booking her appointment and she received a confirmation text two days before her appointment. Spruce is a progressive salon. They're the first I've seen to have gender-neutral pricing based on time and length cut. My wife had what Spruce calls a "Short Haircut." At the time of writing this, a Short Haircut costs $30-40 and Mid/Long Haircut costs $45-55. Destiny saw my wife promptly at her appointment time. My wife was at the salon for about 30 minutes. She paid $48 after tip, card payment processed via Square. I thought my wife's haircut turned out great. It has nice volume and style. She is East Asian and has mostly straight black hair. She commented to me the night of her cut that her hair felt healthier. The salon is located at BB&T Plaza (shopping center) on University Drive in Durham, not far from the US 15/501 highway (exit 105). Inside, the space is clean, modern, humble, and understated. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, shower curtains were hung in between chairs. Regarding COVID, Spruce closed a week early, before the official state-imposed lockdown began. Many cancellations was a big reason why. They closed for three months. They reopened in June 2020 and have been adhering to the state's phase guidance. For example, they've slowly been increasing the number of customers allowed into the salon at one time. Customers are not allowed to go inside until their appointment time. Also due to COVID, staff was not blow drying. Destiny gave my wife the option of a dry cut or a wet cut. My wife opted for wet cut so Destiny washed my wife's hair before the cut. After washing my wife's hair, Destiny immediately sanitized the sink and chair that was used for the wash. Since my wife opted for the wet cut and Spruce was not blow drying, my wife walked out of the salon with wet hair. I think my wife has found her go-to hair salon in the Triangle. Worst haircut of my life. I got my haircut by Destiny in March. I specifically sought out a salon and stylist trained to cut curly hair. After waiting 6 weeks for the appointment, my appointment was canceled the night before and then rescheduled for I believe 3 weeks later. I should have just taken it as a sign. I asked for a trim and layers. She cut over a years worth of growth off my hair. She also protein treated my hair without asking me if that was something I wanted, which I didn't. Then when it shrank after the cut and styled she looked visibly concerned that the final product was shorter than expected and several inches shorter than we had discussed, but when I said "it's really short" she just told me to message her on instagram if I needed styling recommendations. Despite the fact that I had shown her the half up style I did almost everyday prior to the cut and asked for it to remain long enough for this, it was way too short to be put up, six months of growth later it's still too short. As a person with curly hair I've had bad haircuts before, I knew this one was bad but hoped in a couple months it would grow out a bit, but nope, almost six months later my hair is still a hack job with a horrible middle shelf of layers. I'm still not at the length I was when I went into the salon. Literally everyday I struggle to manage my hair because of this haircut. I am sick of salons charging $200 for a Rizzo or Deva certified stylist who doesn't understand the basics of curls and texture. I wish I could give it 0 stars. read more

I am still fairly new to getting my hair highlighted, so I had a lot of questions, and Syd answered them all without making me feel dumb for asking. After losing a hairstylist of 10 years, I was looking forward to my appointment. I called Spuce on Wednesday, I was given an appointment on Friday at 11:00 with Corinne. I was told to follow the link that was text to me, fill it out and leave a credit card # so if you were a no show or canceled under 24 hours before service they would charge 50% of the service. Got it. Did it. Received a text and e-mail on Friday morning reminding me of my appointment. Right before I left the house at 10, (I am around 45 min. away and needed gas.) I received a call from an unknown #, which I don't answer. No message was left, and it was not the salons #. At 10:22 I received another phone call from the same #, so I answered. I love the feel of the salon and the plants around are a great decoration piece! Initial, booking process was quite simple. However, my stylist wasn't very professional as I left knowing her credit score and other personal details of her life. I also left with subpar color and cut. Took another appointment at another salon to correct both. I did make a 2nd appointment when I was leaving because the stylist hung around and I didn't want to explain why I wouldn't make a return appointment. When the reminder came up for the appointment and I had the opportunity to cancel several days prior to the appointment, I clicked cancel. It wasn't until the 2nd reminder that, although you had the option to cancel and the screen changes to a thank you message and the actual verbage instructs that you call to cancel. I was hit with an $83.50 service charge for cancelling to close to the appointment. So in total I spent over $200 for my initial appoint plus $200 for correction and $83.50 for a cut and color that wasn't at all what I asked for. There isn't a number to contact an owner or manager so yelp is the only place to express disappointment. read more
