The thing I love the most about this gym is the fact that it is a Carlson Gracie jiu jitsu team. For those who don't know, Carlson had a no nonsense policy. This meant the jiu jitsu he taught was MMA oriented and specifically design to finish fights as quick as possible. This is a great style for anyone who is looking to train for MMA or just learn efficient self defense. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to learn a discipline or just get in shape with a purpose. One of the three has some special behavioral needs, and Carroll's is the perfect fit for him. The instructors, are patient, while teaching their students a high level of discipline, respect for each other, their higher ups, their parents, and above all themselves. They really drive home with each student that their success depends solely on their own focus and motivation, while still instilling a positive team spirit. Joe and Maggie Carroll are extremely dedicated to their passion for martial arts and even more so their passion for sharing their knowledge. The classes are kept smaller unlike other schools we had tried in the past, so the students receive the most from their lessons. I also find that they are one of the most affordable martial arts programs around. The students are prepared thoroughly for their gradings and competitions, they are expected to work hard, and really have something to be proud of when the time comes. Master Carroll and his wife have been a saving grace through covid-19. Making exceptional Social distancing arrangements for the kids to keep up their studies, and giving them something positive to focus on while everything else has been off kilter. During that time, they have "lost" him twice (the first time he flagged down a stranger on the sidewalk and asked to use his phone to call me.) He has broken his arm. And still, they flag me down on the sidewalk asking for additional fees for equipment, belt advancements, tournaments, and more. Once you child advances to black belt protest, classes are Available only three times per week - and the Saturday morning class is frequently cancelled so they can hold more profitable sessions. So, be prepared to move everything else in your life to accommodate their whims. Parents are not permitted to stay inside the dojo during classes, (so god knows what, if anything good, your child is learning for $250 per month plus extra fees), relegating you to sitting in your car for a 40 minutes session, or shopping at one of the filthy stores in this strip center. Training is "get them through," style, with no character or learning around the craft itself. "Masters" are high school and college students who function without leadership and just try to get commissions for extra charges. No one should take their children here. I am perpetually sorry I stayed as long as I did.

What I love about Sr. is that he keeps the kids IN CHECK! Martial arts starts with discipline and many of these young kids are bouncing around or talking or not listening to directions. I appreciate that Sr. keeps them in line. In fact I prefer it because it's so distracting to the other kids who really want to learn and the parents aren't telling their own kids to buckle up and stop playing around.

I have been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) at Bashta's for 5 months under Adam Laudano. BJJ is…read moreoffered 3 days a week and also 1 more day of open mat. The classes always start off with a 30 minute warm-up that includes a variety of cardio exercises and stretching. We then usually drill a new technique and/or practical self-defense for up to 45 minutes. Adam's instruction is very detail oriented and thorough. He won't let a single person go through class without being able to perform the technique well. He is respectful and is seemingly unlimited in his knowledge of BJJ. After drilling, we "roll" (spar) with each other for 15-30 minutes. I get the sense that i'm part of a "team" because everyone supports each other at regional competitions. Competing is encouraged as a means to grow skills and progress. No one is expected to win, only to learn. All of the students are very respectful and helpful. There is a variety of white belts all the way to black. The black and brown belts are extremely respectful and helpful to the other students. There is no pressure in Adam's classes, or feeling of judgment by others. The classes themselves are very informal, questions are encouraged at all times. My fitness has greatly improved overall from taking BJJ. I used to go to Planet Fitness 4-5 days a week and see much superior results from doing BJJ.

By 2017, my younger daughter daughter was show by an interest in martial arts, and I remembered how impressed I had been with World Champion Taekwondo. I asked my friend, who's daughter had invited my older daughter to the party there years ago, about checking it out, and she said she had a pass for a free month trial she could give to me. My younger daughter went for a month and loved it and decided she wanted to continue. My daughter has now been taking classes here for over a year, and she loves it. All the instructors and assistants are various levels of black belts, and the student to instructor ratio is very good. There is not much down time with individual instruction within the group setting. The kids are all very engaged, encouraged to do their best, taught to root for one another, and reminded to do their best both at school and at home with their parents. Master Jang, AJ, and Robert are incredibly skilled and are great with both kids AND adults.
