I found a store like this in S. Ont a few years ago and went looking for one in Calgary. I found the Blue Door. Now it's my go-to place for olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The proprietor is knowledgeable and friendly. Always willing to share his expertise and make suggestions. I won't use bottled salad dressing again! . . . and I can replace the butter on my popcorn with olive oil infused with herbs that taste like butter. Great find. read more

No... its not blue door oil they sell. Bad joke, but I'm glad I went in. They sell the Olive oils and the most delicious balsamic vinegars I have ever tried. You can sample them as you are reading what foods they go best with as I did. Each of the products sits at eye level in an urn with a spiggot for you to open and fill small taster cups. Great idea. They sell the small concentrated bottles for $6 a piece which I thought was reasonable for the quality. The larger bottles are available too. I was told that the balsamics have aged for as long as 12 years. My wife was making one of my favorite dinners, roast duck, and I found a beautiful tasting Italian cherry balsamic that we used to enhance our meal. I also used it in my salad dressing. Great selection of robust oils! It's difficult to find shops that offer high polyphenol olive oils, and so this is (by far) the best shop in the Calgary-Airdrie area for robust oil selection! They also have friendly, knowledgeable customer service and good vinegars. read more

My husband stumbled upon this awesome little shop in his travels recently and brought me home a bottle of the most divine herbal olive oil. He brought me back there a few weeks later. This shop is beautiful, a real minimalist and clean aesthetic. You can sample all their wears before buying. they have a huge variety of Flavour Infused Olive Oils and Balsamic Vinegar. this isn't your Grocery Store EVOO. This is high end! When it says its an Espresso Balsamic, its an Espresso Balsamic. My last buy there was a Espresso Balsamic (amazing for BBQ sauce), a Harissa Oil (best I've EVER had) and a 60ml of White Truffle EVOO that I think will seriously last me a year it is so powerful. It has also inspired me to eat mash potatoes about 10x more The product ranges from sublime to robust to blow your head off! Its really reasonably priced considering you do not have to use a lot of these powerful little concoctions. I live in the deep South, a far ways away and I will be back often. Savour the taste as it runs down the back of your throat and mingles momentarily with your saliva. Have I got your attention? Good! Blue Door. Go now. Review done. Ha! Just kidding. Blue Door is a lovely shop filled with (at the time of visit) 51 different flavours of olive oils and balsamic vinegars. I dare you to head in and test Bruce's knowledge of oil and vinegar pairings for any dish you're trying to prepare (or attempting to spice up!). Things I learned during my visit: - Quit buying shitty olive oil from the grocery store. You can generally only cash in on the health benefits of olive oil within the first 18 months from the crush date of the olive. It's an impossible date to know from mass manufactured oils. The expiry date is not a good indicator. - You can put a combination of olive oil and balsamic vinegar on anything from strawberries or ice cream to salad to stir fries... even omelettes. And using different flavour infusions adds such a different dynamic to the taste! - You can sample any and all types of olives oils and balsamic vinegars and combinations thereof before you purchase. When you're ready, it's all bottled in-store, right in front of your eyes. - If you can't decide on just one set of flavours, you should try a 6 bottle sampler set... three oils, three vinegars... and only $30 (GST included!). I came home with the following pairings: - Dark chocolate balsamic vinegar and blood orange olive oil (great on strawberries or ice cream) - Blackberry ginger balsamic vinegar and organic Persian lime olive oil (to try on shrimp stir fry) - Raspberry balsamic vinegar and organic basil olive oil (perfect for salads!) I can confirm... the dark chocolate combo does indeed go well with ice cream. Who knew that'd make such a great topping! And... its healthy olive oil, so that just means I can now eat more ice cream, right? Basil olive oil makes a lovely base for the frying pan when you're cooking an omelette. And the raspberry and basil combo has me eating more veggies than I can handle. But I'm having a hard time remembering why stuffing my face with vegetables is a bad thing. I love quality olive oil and vinegars, they make such a big difference in my salads. I've tried 3 other places prior to this - kensington's oliv (before they closed), TD square's olive oil & vinegar place (before they also closed), and Soffrittos. So far, this place is far my favourite. I only needed vinegars and can't speak for the olive oils, but they tasted rich, fresh, and high quality. The service was awesome - the lady was very patient with me as I fought through my indecisiveness. I wish they had a location closer to downtown, but I'm more than willing to return for more. I didn't understand how great olive oil could be. This shop is bright, clean and pleasing to the eye. You can sample all of their olive oils and vinegar, as well as their salts with conveniently placed vats and tiny plastic cups. The gentleman manning the counter was enthusiastic, pleasant, and knowledgeable. If you consider yourself passionate about good food, you *need* to get a bottle of good quality olive oil like they sell here. Keep your grocery store stuff for every day cooking, but when you really want to make something special and wow your guests and yourself, break out the good stuff. read more

I am a personal chef and have been searching for a high quality olive oil for my work. After attending a conference featuring California olive oil (the new gold rush) I knew I was never ever going to use the grocery store stuff again. So glad I found the Blue Door!
