The wine, I must say, I don't like all of their wines, but there are a nice few. I personally prefer their cold whites and rose on a warm summer day. Their little shop is also super cute and makes for a cute photo op or to shop for some nice pieces. So, Grab your girlies and hit the valley for a nice time.

You never felt rushed, and she made the whole tasting feel relaxed and personal. But the real highlight came when Adrian, the winemaker, joined us. Instead of a quick hello, he sat with us and spent real time sharing his story, how he came to winemaking, the "why" behind the wines, and even stories about his growing family. It turned what could have been a simple tasting into something much more memorable. This is exactly what we love about Carmel Valley compared to Napa or Sonoma. Here, the winemakers still pay attention. They sit down with you. They give you time. You leave feeling like you've not only tasted great wine, but actually connected with the people behind it. Big Sur Vineyards sources most (if not all) of their wines from Sonoma Valley. 1 sparkling rose wine (made with Merlot) and very yummy, 2 white varietals, and 3 reds. Her price point is very reasonable on each wine we tasted. It was a very pleasant surprise. We have tasted at almost all of the tasting rooms in Carmel Valley Village. This is not a liquor store. This is not a wine bar. This is a tasting studio where artwork and artisan wine meet. You don't need to trip over a stray bottle of Talbott, Bernardus, or Testarossa on your way to pick up your next pour. No, this is not an ideal way to try Idle Hour wines for the first time, even if they taste just as good. You should be tasting them in the Sierra Foothills town of Oakhurst, where the wines are made, as the first winter snows arrive in Yosemite, coating the peaks, domes, waterfalls, and redwoods in delicate shades of white. You should be sipping Anna's delicious Heringer Estate Vineyard Tempranillo (Sacramento Delta) by the dim, flickering light of a ponderosa wood fire. You should be enjoying this Arroyo Seco Viognier with a chanterelle mushroom and smoked salmon bisque. Your Love Ranch GSM "cuvée rouge" (Madera County) needs some grilled bison or lamb and a rugged mountain landscape capacious enough to take it all in. Your Santa Lucia Highlands Clone 777 Pinot Noir needs a DVD of "Sideways" playing in the background of your comfortable Queen's Inn room as you soak up its bright red cherry goodness while hoping that Maya, not Miles, is right about why we truly like and sometimes even love a well made, soulful wine. It does not work as well with a half dozen noisy strangers slurping their Petit Verdots enthusiastically and with abandon. So you adjust. You pay your $10 tasting fee for the seasonal selection of 6 wines. You tune out the talkative mob of tasters by focusing on the tastes and smells in your glass. You remember your last snowshoe hike in Yosemite to the top of Inspiration Point. You fantasize about cedar plank grilled salmon and lingonberry sauce paired with the Pinot, or grass fed, chicory rubbed skirt steak served with generous glasses of Cab Franc. You buy a bottle or two of Anna Marie's newly released, award winning Tempranillo for the cellar and plan, next time, to do it a different way. The wine tasting fee was $10 the last time we went, which has been a good 4 months. Inside has many nice seating which are good for small groups and couples to enjoy their wine. One time we had our toddler with us and Sal was ok with her joining us. We did enjoy their reds the most because they were very smooth and rich. I would very much like to come here more often if I live closer. Highly recommend checking them out if you're in the area.

We have our favorites in Carmel Valley, but decided that when we visit, we need to make a point of trying a new spot. On this trip out, Rombi was the spot. They were highly recommended by Summer over at Parsonage who knows our palate very well. The tasting room sits back from Carmel Valley Road just a bit so if you weren't actively looking for it, it could be easy to miss. Their address is 1 Center Street, but they are basically right in front of Jerome's Market. The tasting room is cozy with a bar and only a few tables. They are only open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5:00. Typically the tasting room is manned by Sal, owner and winemaker. On our visit, Sal was elsewhere, but Kathy took wonderful care of us. Rombi is very small production with only about 300 cases a year. They specialize in reds. We were treated to tastes of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Syrah and Petit Verdot. Honestly, we loved each wine we tried. If I had to pick favorite reds in Carmel Valley these would be it with the exception of Parsonage wines which we dearly love. Kathy told us about the wines and made our visit so enjoyable. Each wine is priced around $70 - I believe one was priced a bit higher. I can understand the pricing with such small production and wonderful quality. However, I was so surprised the tasting fee was only $10 at the time we visited which is practically unheard of anymore. I would like to stop in again someday if only to meet Sal, who I hear is quite the character. Of course, we'll have to ask him "Where's Kathy?". Kathy made a point of telling us when she is behind the bar all she ever hears is "Where's Sal?" Rombi is definitely well worth a stop!
