Almost smack bang in the middle of the drive down Brunswick Street, the cinemas are located amongst some great dining options making it a grand night out for a true dinner and a movie date. I visited the cinema on Friday evening, their first official day of trade, and while there were some minor system glitches (it's their opening day guys, let's give them some slack), it was a calm and pleasant atmosphere. While there's only the Purple Room up and running at present, the remaining cinemas will open in short succession. The owners have paid respect to the cinema's heyday by seemingly effortlessly combining the old (the carpet remains the same) and beautiful modern Danish-inspired furniture pieces. Surprisingly - it all works. It's an elegant and vibrant place to enjoy a wine pre-movie or indulge in gelato from La Marcelleria and a brownie from Dello Mano. Prices are reasonable and worth it for the experience alone. The cinema itself is luxurious. Leather seats make it a comfortable viewing experience, and for the more adventurous there's the bean bags at the front of the cinema. Thankfully the Sourris brothers decided to take over the old Village Twin cinemas (which was designed by Ron Monsborough - considered Australia's most acclaimed cinema architect), to breathe new life to the heritage listed building, in New Farm.Its been around since 1921 & closed its doors in 2001. This building was considered by many to be Monsborough's "masterpiece", so the Sourris brothers have mostly stuck to the original design & look. Purple carpet, purple seats, purple curtains. We were here for the official opening (back in late July 2014) and have returned several times since. Enjoy it so much that we decided to become a purple club member for only $16.50 for the year, which then allows you to watch any movie any day for $9.50. When you become a member, you also get a complimentary movie ticket for 1 (valid for one month). Just recently, New Farm Cinemas opened their Gold Room cinema, which is their premium cinema with full service food & drinks to your seat. As a member, you will have a discount on your gold room ticket. If you come early enough before your film, you must try one of the delicious gourmet pizzas that are named after movies. We decided to try the 'La Dolce Vita' which had a beautiful tomato base, spicy Calabrese salami, black olives, & mozzarella. It went perfectly with our "the artisan coffee roaster" macchiato. They have a great selection of snacks, hot food, drinks & Dello Mano chocolate. Although there's no designated parking lot for patrons, there are plenty of street parking, around the cinemas. Audience numbers aren't huge, however, so you're usually guaranteed a seat if turning up just before the start of the film. My favourite bit about the Twin Regal is the gentleman who sometimes takes tickets at the door. He's a slightly old-world character and greets every patron entering the cinema with a very enthusiastic, "Enjoy the film!" Love him. Love the Regal Twin.

I would avoid the cinemas during school holidays as they can get packed full of children. They do have mothers in pram showings and day out with the girls, where you can do group booking. For these special events they are limited shows, like in not every movie out is offered.

Playing mainly independent, foreign and art-house films, the Schonell is open to the public but barely anyone knows it exits. The cinemas themselves are quite beautiful and intimate, with comfortable and slightly stereotypical red theatre seats and dim lighting. The theatre is essentially run by two people, the projectionist and manager and they look after this place with much love. The Schonell does not get anywhere near enough advertising, even on campus you will only see the movie posters up at the theatre itself. A few things to note: - Opening hours and session times change depending on what films are being shown - The box office opens 30 mins before each session - They accept cash only but there are plenty of ATMs on campus - The Cinema runs from Thursday to Monday (no sessions are screened on Tuesday or Wednesday) - They have an awesome student discount (especially for UQ students) - There are also movie/meal deals connected with the Schonell Pizza Cafe It is such a privilege to have independent cinemas around and this is one classy joint that deserves much more love than it currently obtains. There's only ever a handful of people in the cinema and it worries me that they may one day decide to cut their losses and it close it down. Thus, it is my personal mission to spread the word. I suppose the downside to the Schonell is that is doesn't show a great number of films at once (usually around 4 or 5) and screenings aren't so frequent. You're also limited to mostly art-house/alternative films at the Schonell, another aspect which probably detracts from its popularity. But my way of thinking is that movie tickets at Schonell are so cheap ($6 for UQ students, $8 for other students and $12 for adults) that you can afford to go often and see lesser known films that you may not have otherwise chosen to pay big money to see. That's what I like about the Schonell. You can broaden your mind for not too much money whilst sitting in a comfy chair. Hot tip: if seeing a film in the main theater, choose a seat in the front row--they recline!
