In the six years I've lived in Brisbane, this building, a one-time cinema, has been shrouded in rumours of a return to it's glory days as a place for movie buffs to congregate. Finally, this month the rumours came true and the old Village Twin reopened as the New Farm Cinema. Almost smack bang in the middle of the drive down Brunswick Street, the cinemas are located amongst some great dining options making it a grand night out for a true dinner and a movie date. I visited the cinema on Friday evening, their first official day of trade, and while there were some minor system glitches (it's their opening day guys, let's give them some slack), it was a calm and pleasant atmosphere. While there's only the Purple Room up and running at present, the remaining cinemas will open in short succession. The owners have paid respect to the cinema's heyday by seemingly effortlessly combining the old (the carpet remains the same) and beautiful modern Danish-inspired furniture pieces. Surprisingly - it all works. It's an elegant and vibrant place to enjoy a wine pre-movie or indulge in gelato from La Marcelleria and a brownie from Dello Mano. Prices are reasonable and worth it for the experience alone. The cinema itself is luxurious. Leather seats make it a comfortable viewing experience, and for the more adventurous there's the bean bags at the front of the cinema. It's only early days but their yearly membership is calling my name. Who wouldn't love a Saturday morning pastry from Chouquette before casually strolling across the road for a movie? read more

Ever since the closure of the Regent cinemas in Brisbane's CBD, there has been something missing in our cinema landscape. A venue that harks back to the Hollywood of yesteryear. Thankfully the Sourris brothers decided to take over the old Village Twin cinemas (which was designed by Ron Monsborough - considered Australia's most acclaimed cinema architect), to breathe new life to the heritage listed building, in New Farm.Its been around since 1921 & closed its doors in 2001. This building was considered by many to be Monsborough's "masterpiece", so the Sourris brothers have mostly stuck to the original design & look. Purple carpet, purple seats, purple curtains. We were here for the official opening (back in late July 2014) and have returned several times since. Enjoy it so much that we decided to become a purple club member for only $16.50 for the year, which then allows you to watch any movie any day for $9.50. When you become a member, you also get a complimentary movie ticket for 1 (valid for one month). Just recently, New Farm Cinemas opened their Gold Room cinema, which is their premium cinema with full service food & drinks to your seat. As a member, you will have a discount on your gold room ticket. If you come early enough before your film, you must try one of the delicious gourmet pizzas that are named after movies. We decided to try the 'La Dolce Vita' which had a beautiful tomato base, spicy Calabrese salami, black olives, & mozzarella. It went perfectly with our "the artisan coffee roaster" macchiato. They have a great selection of snacks, hot food, drinks & Dello Mano chocolate. Although there's no designated parking lot for patrons, there are plenty of street parking, around the cinemas. When trying to explain to my 85yr+ Nanna where I live in New Farm, she ventured a geographic point of relevance: "how far away are you from the cinema?" Given the cinema has been in its place on Brunswick Street since before my Nanna was born (although, only just!), she's probably not the only Brisbanite who uses it as a point of reference for the New Farm region. What's really special is that - unlike many buildings from its era - the New Farm Cinemas have not been repurposed into a new use. The buildings remain a functional and popular cinema - with a dab of history to make your trip more fulfilling. Buying tickets to see a horror movie (around ~$15 per adult), I was told it was to be screened in the "Red Room." Well, I commented, that sounds ominous for a horror movie! The staff at the sales counter smiled and responded, "well, they say the cinema is haunted! So you might get more spooks than you bargained for!" Possible ghost sightings aside, the cinema offers beanbag or traditional stand seating. There's your standard lolly bar and... A fully stocked alcoholic bar! Yes, the chinking of glasses you hear during your film is booze! Because how better to face a possibly haunted movie screening than drink in hand? Check out their website for upcoming specials like Disney Sunday's (singalong to Frozen, anyone?) and Fright Night Friday's. Every time I come to Brisbane I get serious cinema envy, and it is all because of New Farm Cinemas. Let me explain... There's a nice selection of films, the seats are super comfy (complete with cushions, yay!), and there is a bar out the front where you can chill and chat while you wait and even buy drinks to take into the cinema. Now that's awesome! The wines I've tried there have been pretty delish, especially the sparkling at the top of the menu (Louis Blanc de Blanc, maybe?!). The location certainly doesn't hurt either. It's on Brunswick Street in New Farm, which makes post-movie dinner and drinks very easy. I guess the parking situation kind of sucks (i.e., there isn't any), but the buses are regular and there is a cab rank down the street. Quite frankly, this works out OK if you were planning to wine and dine anyway. Speaking of which, New Farm Cinemas has movie meal deals with local restaurants, such as Taj Mahal, Gaslight Bistro, Vue and the Brunswick Hotel. If you get a membership card and join the Purple Club, you get $11 tickets for both you and a friend or $8 tickets if you have a concession card. Woo hoo! Membership fees are low (just $16 per year... at the moment, anyway), and you get a free ticket when you sign up, so it pretty much pays for itself. My only complaint is that the ticket, food and drink lines are a little annoying because you can buy anything at both the bar and the ticket counter up the back. Sometimes it seems like you are waiting for ages after not many people. It's just that those customers are buying their tickets, perusing the menu, getting food, looking at the drinks list, getting drinks, etc., and there are not that many people to serve them. I wish I could give half stars so I could give New Farm Cinemas that smidgeon extra. It isn't perfect, but it is pretty damn close. Movies are meant to be seen on a big screen; New Farm Cinemas makes it much more affordable and enjoyable to do so. read more

Kind of disappointing - we went to gold class and they had double booked several seats. Luckily we got there early but the other people realised we had tickets for the same seats, had to go get replacement tickets and then sit at the front.Not a big deal as the gold class is only a few rows deep but its still not ok. Also, they brought out the wrong type of pizza (Or I possibly just ate someone else's pizza - either way, not ok). The regular cinemas are good, nicely done with comfy seats at a good price but I wouldn't recommend gold class till they sort their act out. read more

Tucked away in New Farm, these cinemas are one of the few around that focus on the cinema experience as a whole, rather than how big and loud they are and how many people you can cram into a theatre. Since my first visit, it's been my go-to for a flick, made more convenient by the wide range of dining options nearby. The fit out is nostalgic and welcoming, with throwback vibes of the now mostly-defunct independent cinemas of the 80s and 90s, but without the awful audio and sticky seats. The seats are plush and comfortable and they even have rows of beanbags across the front if you're more in to a heavy recline with a giant glass of wine. The best part about New Farm Cinemas is that the prices are so reasonable; the snack bar has a wide range and the popcorn comes in generous and affordable sizes. There's also a full bar if you need to watch flicks with a buzz on. Great place. Will definitely keep coming back. read more

Sorry Palace Barracks I have a new favourite. Or should I say old favourite. But it wasn't just nostalgia that brought back to my old stomping ground in New Farm, but my kids who were busting to try out the famed movie sacs (aka bean bags). We arrived early to an early session and first in first served, boys were in cinema heaven. Nice popcorn, decent food and beverage options and delish choc tops. No shopping centre parking hassles and waaaay cheaper. Winning :) read more

Oh gosh, I am so sad to write this update but this cinema is in need of a management overhaul to transform its customer experience. I was the biggest advocate of the cinema. When it opened I forgave it a lot of its customer experience hic-ups as it matured its staff and experience but last night I went to see the Ab Fab premier and enjoy a "Red Carpet" experience. Unfortunately despite pre-booking the experience months ago and the cinema knowing they had a full house and promised customers a "special red carpet premier" it all fell apart. - Pre-cinema drink never materialised. - The bar ran out of many of the items on the drinks menu - I saw people take their drinks and walk away without paying as the staff were in such chaos they could not handle the volume of people, nor work out who had paid and not paid. - The goodie back promised to all guests never materialised. - For a packed sell out premier they did not provide allocated seating and therefore human nature is to leave spaces in-between each other. Myself and others had to split up and sit in single seats in-between other groups that had left random seats between each other. All in all a rock bottom red carpet experience and showed up their really poor processes and staff that I have been worried about for sometime now. To summarise, go here if you want to sit in a cool heritage space. Their Gold Rooms do offer great comfort compared to normal cinema seating but don't expect anything from a service experience to accompany/match the building surrounds. Sadly this cinema has lost my loyal custom and perhaps worst of all has lost my defence of their service short-falls. read more

I love a good vintage style cinema, and this one does not disappoint. With large rooms, comfortable seats and a bar (a big yes to taking an alcoholic beverage into your movie) this is a great option for catching the latest as well as older flicks. What I love about this cinema is it's different to every other cookie-cutter cinema chain out there. It has vintage touches throughout and a homely feel. Much like the movie theatre version of Southside Tea Room. I can imagine my Nana feeling very comfortable in here. One drawback is they have immovable arm rests. Another drawback is the parking SUCKS royally, and you're at the mercy of nearby street parking. But that aside, it's a great venue to try out when you're next looking to see a film. read more

The newly renovated New Farm Six Cinemas is a wonderful venue. The customer service was great and friendly. You get that good ole service at a cinema that is often lacking elsewhere. The seating is more than comfortable with small rows and if that is not to your taste the extra extra large bean bags down the front will be sure to delight though you may have difficulty getting out of them so wear long pants. Plenty to eat from candy, pop corn and the gelato is to die for, not some cheap version but the real Italian deal with plenty of flavours to choose from and a tasting so you are sure to get the one you want. Get there early and try a pizza or maybe some pasta. The bar is stocked with some fine wines and beers as well as your run of the mill spirits. The only downside was cocktails are only served Friday to the weekend. Join their purple club and get some great deals on cheap tickets and still cheaper then your chain cinemas. With great restaurants surrounding the cinema, try a dinner and movie night. Guys take your date here and your sure to impress. Overall a great cinema where you won't find screaming chatty loud teenagers, well not one in sight when I was there :) read more

Went to see a gold class movie here, my partner and I both got food poisoning was home sick for the next two days with stomach cramps. Called them and was told to email rather then speak on the phone. Sent two emails, now a month later and still no response. Worst experience and service. read more

Staff are friendly and helpful but can only do so much - the real problem with this business is the owners! This business is woefully understaffed and if you have the misfortune of being served by the owner, be prepared to wish you hadn't come here at all. In busy times it's not uncommon to witness the owners giving staff a dressing down in public view and you feel for the staff who are clearly trying to do the best they can under their poor management. Sessions are frequently moved so be prepared to arrive for a session that has been cancelled without notice. Go to Palace Centro instead - they have their acts together! read more

Excellent Cinema in the heart of New Farm. Tickets are not too expensive, however the venue feels very luxurious. One of the key point of differentiation are the huge bean bags at the front of the cinema making it a more unique experience. I would highly recommend this as a date idea or for the kids in school holidays. read more

Please embrace modern payment methods. Being rudely told that I can't pay by eftpos because that particular purchase (one of several that night) was less than $10 was not something I expected from this venue. At least give us the option to pay a transaction fee and still pay by eftpos. I regularly buy coffees for $3.50 with pay wave these days. It's how people transact in 2015. read more

I have been going to The Pre New Farm Cinema days when there was only a twin class. as yet I have not been to the New however I shouted my adult children to the movies to see "Vacation " a they were told by a couple that they had their seats in the Gold Room paid the same yet there were no ushers around to be of helped so my daughters moved It was an embarrassment . Hey if you are going to advertised great movies sort out your staffing and prices . I would not recommend as the service is better else where . read more
