They have refurbished and expanded recently and it shows. They have a heated pool, and a spa. My sisters wedding went without a hitch, and she was very pleased with her wedding arrangements, service, wedding planning and food at the reception and evening do. I have also had a high tea here with my parents - and thoroughly enjoyed the delicate sandwiches, tea and their wonderful sweets. Here is some information about the history - Built in 1894 by the renowned Cornish architect Silvanus Trevail, the Carbis Bay Hotel quickly gained popularity as a result of the boom in British seaside holidays, which had been made possible by expansion of the railways. Indeed, at the turn of the 19th century, neighbouring Carbis Bay station was a grand affair, boasting its own stationmaster, station house and full-time staff. Today, the business is owned and managed by the Baker family, who have made significant developments to the hotel. Due to this ongoing investment programme, Carbis Bay is widely recognised as one of Cornwall's premier waterside hotels. Cornwall has many stunning area's but St Ives has stolen my heart and run away with it. There are many different beaches to keep everyone from sun worshippers to surfers occupied. Porthmeor is a surfers paradise, a huge sandy beach with enormous waves provide the perfect setting for thrill seekers. Above Porthmeor stands the Tate Gallery, the ultimate place for any art lover. Porthgwidden is more secluded but again it has fantastic waves, a perfect family beach with lots of rock pools for the little ones to explore. It is also small enough to allow children to wander without ever losing eye contact, which as a parent is always a bonus. Porthminster is the most fashionable beach on offer in my opinion, it is a beautiful beach with a golf course and a resturant all on site. Perfect for any young couple. My personal favourite is Carbis Bay, this stunning beach just around the corner from St Ives but just as busy on the weekend. The sea is a lot calmer here which makes it easier to see the fantastic colours of the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately it is still extremely cold but when it's that beautiful who cares? The Carbis Bay hotel is just as stunning as the bay itself. Standing guard on a hillside over-looking the beach it's the perfect setting for a relaxing break. The hotel has many facilities, Amusement arcades for the youngsters, Resturant & well stocked bar for the adults, The jewel in the Carbis Bay hotels crown is however the roof terrace. Enough to satisfy any sun worshippers needs the roof terrace is home to a pool and a bar with a view to die for. I would highly recommend this hotel for families or couples that enjoy the pleasure of a lazy holiday! You would have to go to the Caribbean to find anything to match this superb coast line. I have been to the Caribbean where I paid one hundred pounds to see dolphins, the last time I took a trip to St Ives my family were treated to a visit from the local dolphins for free, not once but twice!

The hotel is old and classic, but modernized enough to be thoroughly comfortable. We got a room facing the pitch and putt out front, complete with double bed and built in bunks through a travel website for the last weekend in August. The room was large and well-appointed with comfortable beds and crisp linens. The sink taps were separate for hot and cold, and the shower either ran borderline-burning hot or cold. There was very little air flow in the room unless the window was open. The hotel was classically decorated. I loved the "library" on the 1st floor with its book wallpaper, LEGO model of the hotel, and modern dog lounger. There's a large double stair case, with seating at each level, much needed since the elevator isn't terribly fast. The lounge area, which we were told used to be the ballroom, had a seating area at each window to enjoy the views. There was a patio outside with a glass windbreak for the same purpose. There's a spa area downstairs, and there's a booklet full of treatments available. We didn't try to book any, but we did enjoy the pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, and aromatherapy showers. While in the sauna, another guest informed us that they were booked for 48 hours solid anyway. Just having access to the aromatherapy showers was a lovely treat after a day of hiking in the coastal air. We ate our evening meals in the lounge area, not having seating at the Terrace (the casual restaurant), not having brought proper dress for the formal dining room, and enjoying the comfy chairs and couches. The full Terrace menu was available. The first night we quite enjoyed the mussels, rocket salad, fresh herbed mozzarella balls, the soup of the day, and the 5 Super Food salad (which changes daily, but always features 5 super foods, so you get the key nutrients in one sitting). Everything was tasty, especially that salad. The second evening, we split the vegetarian platter and the small version of the super food salad. We were quite full the second evening from enjoying cheese and crackers (which we bought at the Sainsbury's in town) while watching the sunset from one of the brick alcoves built into the seaside hill below the hotel. There about 2 dozen alcoves of brick or stone built along the side facing the beach or the coast, though only a couple had chairs. I would think they would've been quite crowded at a different point in the season, since they afforded such lovely views and provided just enough a windbreak. They're incredibly dog friendly and kid friendly. There were dogs and kids running around everywhere the whole weekend. Many folks brought their dogs and kids into the lounge area while they dined. Obviously, you go for the views, but the hotel was a lovely enough experience on its own to make it worth the trip.

However, the shower cannot keep one temperature - complaints among three rooms that my family members were in. That is ridiculous - its 2012 and we are in a developed country. At midnight the alarm on my clock went off. Again, the room maid should be checking that during every cleaning between guests to make sure that doesn't happen. I asked someone to come up in fix it. They sent someone up who hadn't touched one before and was new. After three or four minutes I asked him if he knew what he was doing and he said he didn't ......... I asked him to leave and just unplugged it. My cousin had her wedding here and it went perfectly. I would give it five stars on that.

We arrived by train; you walk about 20-25min to the house and a taxi is recommended if you have a lot of luggage or children because it goes uphill and then downhill when you walk. We were greeted like old friend by Andrew, the owner. Our first time, we had a twin room with ensuite on the top floor not facing the sea which we didn't mind at all as we really wanted a good night's sleep and not the noise from the street. The breakfast is really fantastic. Every day I tried a different one and until today I can't really decide which was the best. They were all delicious. Andrew was very helpful to give tips what to do in the area and how to get to places. The city centre is just 5min away if you short cut up the hill and through the park. We had a wonderful stay at Glencree House and do recommend it! The second time we had a twin room with half-view of the sea and an insight into Andrew's backyard. We heard his kids playing in the garden which wasn't a problem as we weren't in most of the time anyway. Nothing had changed since last time, same hospitality, great breakfast, clean and tidy room. Thanks to Molly and Lisa for being a great help to Andrew and Lynsey. We had a wonderful time in Glencree House - only the poor neigbour's dog that seemed to be shut out of the house very often, barking at the door, was something to get used to - and nothing was too much for Andrew and Lynsey, always helping out with so many things. I very much appreciated the help they gave when I needed a printout for a flight ticket and they offered to print it for me. Thank you again. I have been to so many guesthouses now but Glencree is always my No. 1. Room Tip: Rooms facing the street are quieter as it's a side street but rooms facing the sea have a wonder... Green Features: The house has only family and friends tested shampoo, shower gel and hand soap, and delicious breakfast where the food comes from local farmers.

Way back in 1774, Tregenna was built as a 12-bedroom private home for a wealthy Cornishman with a love for the sea. Samuel Stephens Esquire commissioned the build of the house from local granite, and the four castellated turrets and original glazed skylight with the family coat of arms can still be seen today. The house remained in the family until it was sold by their final heir, John Stephens, to a family of local bankers, the Bolithos, in 1871. The Bolithos acquired the house at the same time that Brunel was building the Great Western Railway from London to Penzance to serve the West of England. It was then fashionable for all the great railway companies to establish destination hotels by the sea. GWR discovered Tregenna Castle with its spectacular views overlooking St Ives Bay and decided to lease it from the Bolitho's in 1878, before purchasing it in 1895. With the help of local craftsmen, the original house was extended to include new function rooms, a restaurant, adjoining kitchens, and a hallway leading to the main reception area. Thanks to the exceptional quality of the work, and our show-stopping location, it wasn't long before Tregenna became the 'Jewel in the Crown' of the GWR hotels.

Is asking for lunch such a strange thing in Falmouth? Again, we were told that lunch service was over, but they did have some sandwiches and they would seat us and we could look over that menu. Since it was late, we were the only ones in the dining room but then again, we didn't expect it to be packed. But when we looked at the menu, we were sorely disappointed. There were only about 3 choices and they were exorbitantly expensive. That's when those words were uttered...and we walked out. It looks like it might be a nice place to stay, but my experience with it is less than stellar.

The hotel itself is very exclusive, for most the only time they will be able to afford it is during the works party xmas party. This review is just for the evening meal - we didn't stay here. (They provide bed & breakfast, as well as having a restaurant and bar.) We ate here at the suggestion of our host as we were staying nearby. Although it was curry night, we had had a curry a few days before so decided to choose from the main a la carte menu. To start, my partner had whitebait with a mixed salad garnish (£8.50), and I had the carrot and orange soup (£5.95), served with warm bread and butter. The soup was very pleasant - it is hard to go wrong with soup, but it was nice nevertheless. The whitebait were fine, but were 7 of the smallest whitebait we've seen! We both had linguine for the mains: my partner crab linguine, topped with rocket; and I had the vegan linguine, with roasted squash, sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms, red onions and wilted spinach. My linguine was fine, but it would have benefited from a sauce raher than the veg being simply in oil. My partner's crab linguine was very tasty, but unfortunately he found half a dozen pieces of crab shell in the linguine. We explained this to the waiter, who spoke to the kitchen and came back to say that the shelled crab was bought in, and should have been shelled properly by the supplier. I'm not quite sure what to make of this: surely the restaurant should take responsibility for what it serves, rather than blaming suppliers? Anyway, we weren't impressed and so it drops a star for that. The Mediterranean side salad (£4.95), drizzled with balsamic vinegar, was good. Service (from a young student) was friendly but a little haphazard. With two soft drinks, the bill came to £63 for two. I'm not sure if we'd go again; it was okay, but we might try one of the other eateries next time.

Huge portion of mussels, nice sized and meaty ones and the broth was incredible. I have never before felt so stuffed from mussels, well worth it. The only disappointment was the bread nibble. Four pieces of bread for 6 pounds feels excessive, especially compared to the reasonable food prices. All in all, very happy we stopped here and would go back.

The bedrooms felt like they had been recently refurbished but the rest of the hotel was pretty tatty, with chipped paint and flakey wallpaper. Doors to cleaning rooms were left open and rubbish was left outside which gave a very poor perception of this hotel. The shower in our bedroom also fluctuated constantly from freezing to scorchio and the door wouldn't shut resulting rapidly in a flooded bathroom. However, the level of customer service in this hotel was exceptional and just proves how simply things like friendliness and helpfulness can turn someone's experience around... The front of house staff were quick to change our room for us when we mentioned the problems with the shower. We were, in fact, moved to a room with a brand-new top-of-the-range shower and breathtaking views of St Michael's Mount from the window. A room that would normally have been a lot more expensive. In fact, all the staff we came into contact with were amazing good at their jobs - from reception, to bar staff, to waiting staff, and in particular the older chap (Anthony) that single-handedly ran the breakfast service. Oh the breakfast!! There was so much choice from full English, to Continental, to smoked salmon and scrambled egg, to poached haddock, and any combination of the above. Nothing was too much trouble and our server never batted an eyelid when my slightly fussy travelling companions made particular demands on how the scrambled egg and sausages should be cooked, as well as asking for extras...! The evening food, although nothing outstanding, was tasty and filling. My one complaint was that there was nowhere in the bar where you could escape the noisy television, which happened to be showing the final of BGT on this evening. We ended up going to bed early just to get away from it! Overall, what could have been a disappointing stay turned into a lovely travel experience and we ended up staying for an extra night.

The staff was helpful when we were in the Sitting room across from the front desk when we were trying to decide where to go. Overall it was a very good experience. I just wish I had had another day or two to see everything that the staff told us about.
