They give you both a geology and history lesson before you start your search, which our group LOVED! The owners were so incredibly kind and hospitable, and curious about where we were visiting from. The ground is COVERED, and it was such a special experience to hunt for your own amethysts. We had such a great time comparing as each of us picked very different (but consistent) stones from the mine. If you're a rock hound or an enjoyer of stones, this is worth the drive and well worth your time. The only downside is the bugs - horseflies everywhere, and they're persistent. Recommend planning for that to prevent it, especially if you're easily irritated by bugs. All told, we were here for about an hour, but if the bugs hadn't been an issue we may have stayed for closer to 2 as there's SO many stones to look through!

We could've spent hours (yes HOURS) picking through the dirt because we were finding amazing pieces of amethyst every two seconds! It really is that plentiful!! And if you catch the personal landowner, (I think Laurie) she'll regale your with fascinating stories of beads, wolves, moose and Lynx on the property! It was a fascinating day for sure- the best thing to do in Thunder Bay! Regarding arrival- it's a dirt road- just keep going. You'll get there!
