They are immensely cheaper than the Win Sam butcher on the opposite side of the road, and when you spend over $10 they give you free chicken bones! They also have a few freezers that contain prawns, dumplings and other Asian foods.

They were really helpful. I told them I had about 7 people coming over and what would be the best thing to buy. I ended up getting some chicken wings and pork chops. Quality was really good. I've since gone back and tried their sausages and chicken breasts. Again, two thumbs up. Also I was very excited to see that they sell rabbit, not many places stock it, so I'll be going back to grab some of those.

Not only did they come up with a recommended cut of meat but they also gave advice as to how to cut the meat and what ingredients they would put in there. Obviously in this part of Lygon Street this butchers isn't cheap. But I for one think the difference in price is worth it for the massive difference in quality compared with the supermarkets.

When we finally got to the front the lists of customer orders took up the back wall. There's a reason why this butcher is constantly busy. The quality of the meat that is sourced locally (be it chicken or pork) is exceptional and the prices are very reasonable. The Bouchiers of Balwyn also boast a long list of specialties including delicious slavinks, beef racks, Peking duck and more. They also do the most phenomenal pork racks. They are also able to prepare particular cuts and products for special occasions all year round, just give them plenty of notice. Service is brilliant and the team is efficient and friendly and their ability to work under the pressure of events like Christmas is testament to their skills as professionals. I have been buying meat from the Bouchiers of Balwyn for years and am always impressed with the quality and prices and never disappointed by the product or service.

And given that these days, we seem to have very little time to do our shopping, it shouldn't be a surprise. However, a few years ago I rediscovered the butcher shop in Kerrie Road, Glen Waverley. I'd been watching a lot of cooking shows and decided that I'd try and cook with meat you don't have to unwrap from a plastic tub. One of the best things I ever did. The quality of the meats on offer is fantastic. The chicken breasts taste like chicken, not cardboard. The steaks are tender and they don't look dry and horrid like you find in supermarkets. The service is excellent. The staff are really friendly, always up for a chat, and if you're stuck for an idea of what to cook, they'll have a suggestion or two.
