My elderly mother started to come into Watford General, a lot from the start of the covid…read morepandemic. She would come into the hospital with a small urine infection, otherwise okay in herself, and then weeks later, still there with delerium and it did not get bette,r till I got her back home. Care for her in this hospital ,was not always what I would have liked for my elderly loved one. I was her full-time carer and managing her syptoms well in her home. We tried to avoid the hospital ,because so many times , mum actually got worse in there. She would go in for one thing, urine infection, pace maker and weeks later still stuck there suffering with delerium. During july 2023 we had to give in , and take her down with chronic hypoxia symptoms. Quickly dispelled from resus, she was admitted in with a urine infection and after a week almost sent home without treating the Hypoxia. I so wish I had just taken her home but I was trying to help her get the seizures sorted out. She begged me to take her home as the staff were tipping her up and down in the bed and her stats were all over the place. Her time was up after a month and They sent her to a care home against her and my will, and in the care home they were woefully inept at managing her symptoms and at some point she started to a point of no return. Left in the bed on her own, fed food lying down ,when she had a hiatus hernia. She was physically sick and never could eat or drink again. Admitted back into A and E. The stroke unit refused to see her, and she had a massive stroke,whilst being injected with fluids. I saw it all happening, and it was as if she was being excecuted. The drs on the ward that day surrounded me, and stopped me being with her in her last breaths. They asked, what did your mother come in for originally? They were clearly frightened. So I now have ptsd from that day. Questions-why did the hospital send my mother to a care home who couldnt look after her? Why did the nurses on the ward not manage her hypoxia better? I am quite happy to blame Watford hospital but I blame myself more for sending her to you.

As soon as I arrived at the hospital for my appointment, they told me that an interpreter had been…read morebooked in for me by the doctor, even though I did not ask for one and did not need one. I was quite shocked, as I have been living in the UK for so many years now and this is the first time that this has happened to me. I believe that the fact that I am not originally English gave them the right to assume that I did not have any knowledge of the English language and that I required an interpreter during my visit. I would also like to point out that I did actually graduated in Interpreting and Translation myself in my home country and I honestly find such behaviour from the hospital staff quite concerning and offensive. The doctor who visited me was also incredibly rude and patronising; when I refused to take off my clothes as she asked me, as I only wanted some of my body parts to be examined during the visit, she kept making nasty remarks and wasn't even paying attention to what I was saying. In the end the doctor told me I was "free to escape" (using these exact words), which I found totally inappropriate. After this bad experience, I genuinely hope I will never come across that doctor again.

They have open surgeries in the mornings - so if you're ill and don't have an appointment then you can just drop in. How long you have to wait will depend on how busy they are, but you will be able to see a doctor. Appointments are made for afternoon surgeries and visits to the nurse, and I've never had any problems getting an appointment - they don't make you wait for weeks. I have seen several of the doctors and nurses and they are all very professional, friendly and efficient. The surgery itself is always clean and pleasant. The Medical Centre has its own car park, and there are usually spaces available - but at busy times the car park can be full and local residents get very grumpy about cars parked in the street. However, there is a community car park about 2 mins walk away with plenty of space, so parking is never an issue.

The reception staff and secretaries are really helpful and friendly, and never make me feel like I am a nuisance. Nothing is too much trouble for them. The building is quite new and modern, and there are plenty of seats in the waiting room. The toilets are always clean and well stocked with toilet roll etc. Sometimes the doctors and nurses run a bit late with appointments etc but this is to be expected in a doctor's surgery! Repeat prescriptions seem to be done quickly and efficiently, and it is usally quite easy to get an appointment when I need one. At the moment there is an open surgery in the morning, but I understand that is to change in a few months, so I will watch with interest how easy it is to get an appointment once this happens! That was quite convoluted, but what I was trying to say is that both myself and my brother were born in this hospital. It's gone through many renovations since those days, but it still gives me a creepy, unusual, and chilling feeling when I see it. It's obviously a special place to me, but I don't really like hospitals, and besides, my brother nearly died here twice, once just after birth, complications from Asthma and such. You can blame my parents for that I suppose, they blame each other for it, so why not. It's a very modern hospital that is famous all over England, and perhaps all over Europe. Plus, it has to have a 5 star because I was born there. To give it less tha a 5 would just seem ungrateful. And this is the 1,981st review I've ever written, by the way.

It feels a bit odd reviewing a hospital. I visited a friend in here, so I can't really comment on…read morethe treatment, but on the experience of visiting as a whole. The car park is well signposted, but like most NHS hospitals, you pay on your way out and it costs several pounds. The hospital itself is a maze - there are signposts which seem to lead you in indirect routes, although you usually end up passing the help desk a couple of times to get more directions. It doesn't help that there are several entrances and exits on different floors. The hospital has a fairly nice atmosphere and doesn't seem too clinical. Some corridors have nice pictures on the walls, the cafe is wonderfully cheap (cheap squash, simple but cheap filled rolls) and there are book stalls and charity stands dotted around. It definitely feels like a place that is full of life.

It has that old worn grey look. When I was waiting in reception one time, I overheard one of the receptionists coming back from the toilet saying That toilet spits out when you flush you know. That doesn't sound very hygenic to me, but I didn't test it myself.

All that said, if it's a minor injury that you're suffering from and you're within walking distance (the parking is next to non-existent), then you could do worse than to visit Townlands. The staff (with the exception of the auxilliary nurse who will try to convert you to religion) are helpful and friendly and waiting times are a lot less than a bigger hospital. If, using your own judgement, a couple of stiches won't solve your problems, then head straight to the Royal Berks - where you can be ignored for a few hours.

My mother is in ICU at the moment and it is a tough situation for the whole family as we cannot be…read morethere to support her. However, the nursing staff at the Harefield hospital is AMAZING! Even though I cannot be there to look after my mother, I can say for, confidently, that she is being taken care of by the nurses. They are very caring, compassionate, competent, committed and excellent at communication. Even though they are so busy looking after the patients, they take out time to update me whenever I call ( which is a good few times a day) and also arrange a daily video call for me to see my mum. While on the video call, I see them taking care of my mother, as I would, and also placing their hands on my mum's forehead to comfort her as I would do. I want to thank all the nursing staff who are working day in day out to support and look after the patients. I want to mention all the names, but unfortunately, I only remember a few names and I do not know if it will be appropriate to just mention a few names that I remember. BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your hard work. You all are amazing!
