I have been in several rehearsal studios, & this place is by far the nicest music studio in NYC. The gear provided is well maintained and easy to use, and the space is clean. Located one flight down in the lower level, and easily accessible by 3 elevators. Very easy to get to. Entering from the main street entrance, you're in the studio in a matter of seconds. Ideal for both local & touring musicians, especially those who prefer to bring a lot of their own gear. This place is def a must see! read more

I think these other reviews might be old because the place we just practiced at at this address (260 W. 36th) was only a few months old - maybe under new ownership? In any case, we came here after our other favorite space closed and had a great experience. Nice equipment, super helpful and friendly staff, and a super easy experience. We've tried a lot of the practice spaces in this area and this one was the highest-end by far. It's going to be our new go-to for sure. read more

Rude rude rude.... I know you deal with musicians all day and some musicians, not all, do not have respect. However, I am a customer, paying to use your facilities and the last thing I want is to be treated like a dog by your employees, when I show nothing but respect. I mean the WORST attitudes and personalities. Where did you find these employees?!?!? I literally get "told the rules", greeted with the nastiest attitudes, reprimanded if I accidentally say "the booking is under a company" (they say, "remember we don't book under companies ONLY names..."). Blah blah blah...They actually called me one time AFTER I booked to tell me that?!? WTF why didn't the person on the freaking phone ask for my name?!?!? That's my problem?!? Train your darn employees to ask! This place... I'm done. The low rates are not even worth the drama at this studio. I feel hostile every time I leave this place. Bad energy, bad for the soul, bad for the music. They need to reinstate that "suggestion box" in the bathroom as I'm sure more people will agree with me. read more

Sure it's cheap - but the inflexibility of their policies, and the rudeness (and let's just call it like it is, downright weirdness) of some of the employees - made me take my business elsewhere. Smash is an obvious alternative (and improvement). I'm giving them 3 stars because its a cheap place to rehearse. I'm a pediatrician and I plAY music on the side... I rehearse with this band bi weekly and I must say the rooms are always so hot. I approached the front desk about this and got a pretty unfriendly response. Anyway, I'm torn, I like the location and again I'm told the prices are reasonable. This is where my husband always used to come in high school to jam with his friends. I'm surprised it isn't on here already, but with such a generic name it might just be and I can't find it. The Studio is located on the 3rd floor of a nondescript building on a nondescript block of midtown. When you arrive, you walk through a windy black hallway to the front desk. The practice rooms are extremely cheap and seem to always be running the book 2 hours get one free deal. I have only been in the smaller rooms, but they all have drum sets and tons of amps and equipment. I'd say if you have more than 2 people in the band you probably don't want the very smallest room (Studio E?), but all the others are pretty suitable for at least 4. On their website they have photos of all the rooms so you know what you're getting yourself into. There is a vending machine in the middle of the floor with snacks and earplugs and another around the hallway with drinks. The recording equipment in the room isn't very high tech. Last I checked it's a cassette tape recorder in the corner. Maybe by now they are recording onto CDs-- I wouldn't be surprised either way. But don't expect anything fancy. They sell cassettes in the vending machine just in case you can't find them elsewhere anymore One downside is that they always seem quite disorganized. They never know how much they charged you upfront for the deposit, and I know they have at least 3 entries for my husband so whenever we come in, they look in the wrong account and think he owes the total, only to find an extra deposit under his misspelled name or an old phone #. Basically I don't know much about rehearsal studios. But I like this one... so, 4 stars :) read more

This is my band's goto for rehearsals or just an old-fashioned jam. Every room has a personality of its own: all of them are well stocked with an assortment of amps and equipment, but each room has a little something extra, from a vintage amp to an interesting keyboard setup to a comfy sofa. Even Studio E, a tiny tiny room that we've affectionately dubbed "The Shire", has proven itself acoustically excellent for recording. The staff is friendly and accommodating. They also offer a plethora of guitars to rent - perfect for the times when you're going to a last-minute jam and don't have your axe on you. The message board is stuffed with notices from local bands and recording artists, many looking for musicians. The sign in the bathroom that says "Not all musicians are men - Please keep the toilet seat DOWN" is much appreciated (and the bathroom's always been clean and well-stocked, no small feat for a music studio). We take advantage of the Friday night special nearly every week - buy 2 hours, get 1 free! I don't see my band finding another space anytime soon. Music Makers NY is simply the best forum for rehearsals, jams, lessons, and/or performance workshops in NYC. The studios are kept in pristine condition with top quality amps and PA systems in every room. The staff are all complete professionals and extremely helpful. The instrument rentals available are also of the best quality. However where Music Makers NYC truly stands out is with their weekend jams and performance workshops. There is a sign-up/registration process which allows each participant ample time to play and learn from a top notch professional instructor. All participants are supported and encouraged by that instructor and the other members of the group. It should be noted that every participant is asked to honestly assess and evaluate their musical ability. A rating system has been wisely developed to make sure each participant is placed appropriately for maximum enjoyment and musical development. If someone rates themselves as a seasoned professional and in reality is more of an intermediate level amateur then they are setting themselves up for a potentially disappointing experience. People return to Music Makers NYC year after year because Bob and Denise are such good people and run a fantastic and supportive studio. There are literally hundreds of rehearsal studios in the 5 boroughs. Very few make it past the first year. Music Makers NYC has been around for decades and that is no accident. Great effort at customer service and certainly kind treatment by the staff. The rate card is "cheap" for rehearsal space which is the best selling point for Musicmakers. The rooms are very small and the overall feel is congestion. Amps are diverse for the sound you are looking but bring your own cables for optimum connectivity. The Jam's are interesting. If you are a novice or journeyman this is your "rock fantasy camp" experience. The rating I have played at is 4.5 which is the highest and misleading. All the sign ups are not equal in playing skill so this is an area of criticism. If you have musical chops this may not be the experience you are looking for, if you are curious give it a try. It does beat the local "bar jams" with a more focused approach. I have tried all the Jam Session Coordinator's my picks are Fausto Bozza and John Putnam being the best skilled players that are offered. The are actually gigging professionals. Their jam sessions skew towards blues and R&B but they are seasoned musicians. So if you subscribe for 4.5 jam session even as a recreational player and perform with a likeness towards 6.0 this may not be your "Cup of Tea". read more

Pretty mediocre place, one of the worse rehearsal spaces I've been to in a while. Small rehearsal rooms that are overpriced and they didn't really care about the customers. Had some trouble with the manager Bill and one of the workers there not letting me hang in the waiting room since I was about an hour early so I went to ultrasound that was fine with it even tho I wasn't booked there. Definitely won't book music makers again, the other studios in this building and nearby are much better i.e. Ultrasound, funkadelic studios, rivington, etc read more

Came here for drum practice - staff is ok, You get what you pay for here - more expensive studios have better equipments - fair enough. Second time I came here for a drum session to join a band workshop. Bob (who happens to be the founder and president of the company) was friendly at first - but I have never listened to any of the songs he played on the guitar so I keep the beats simple in order to listen to what he played. Afterwards, he tried to convince me not to join a performance workshop because the songs will be too hard for me and they are playing at least 8 songs on stage (Like if I can't handle it - again, I emphasized I intentionally stepped down on skill level to hear wth he was playing first). Or I'd appreciate more constructive criticism, maybe tempo too fast/slow, 16 beats on hi hat not fluent enough, not enough accents ...etc, but not "ohhhh you aren't on that level" - after all, if you are a good instructor you should be able to give advice that will be HELPFUL to others. I also googled him and found NOTHING about any music he wrote, what school he went to, musical links...etc. No nothing. Period. The people he hired to teach are all graduates from top musical schools though. Like others said, I'd stick with smash studio and funkadelic studio for drums/band practice - those places are more friendly and encouraging. Music Makers should know how to do better business because there are many options for musicians in NYC! read more

A musician friend of mine brought me to Music Makers of New York (the studio) about 10 years ago and I've been coming here ever since! The first day I walked in I felt like a kid in a candy store because there were 6 or 7 rooms filled with musicians playing different styles of music on all levels. Since then I've made so many friends and worked with lots of talented musicians over the years. The best part about it is it's about people coming together to share their love of music. I can't say enough good things about Music Makers NY. I entered one day to take weekly guitar lessons. I remain a member today who, as a result of being a member has become a multi-instrumentalist, front woman of Rock bands and occasional jam coordinator. The environment is supportive and encouraging. I wish I'd read through these before trying the place. You'll note the repeated themes in the reviews: mediocrity, rudeness, and cheapness. I did the performance workshop and my band organizer was pretty mediocre (he gave us incorrect and completely unformatted "charts" printed off of UltimateGuitar.com) and was intermittently rude (he lacked the spine to maintain his rudeness if you stood up to him, so it sort of came and went). When I went to the owners to discuss the situation so that it could be smoothed out, they would not return my calls, only addressed it with me by phone (after I tricked them by using a different phone number; these guys screen their customers' calls...charming) by saying "this happens a lot because our practice window is so short" and didn't address it in any other way. So, in order to increase margins, they reduce the amount of practice time making it more difficult to have a good set or have fun. "Why not schedule extra rehearsals?" Good question, they will not give you contact information for each other or the "professional" that's matched up with you. They will issue messages from a generic info@ email address. So, you have no recourse when you lose 30 minutes out of the 12 hours you have to work out a 7 song set because your "professional" rolled in 20 minutes late eating a falafel. I could say so much more, but instead I'll just say that if you're looking for a performance workshop, go to the New York City Guitar School. Their staff is polite, professional, take a modicum of pride in their charts, show up on time, and care if you come back. It's too bad. NYC needs more services like this and having one of them be unacceptably terrible is a disappointment. read more

Being on 30th Street right off 8th avenue makes it easy to get to. The prices for the rooms and the equipment are great. Staff is very friendly. Very clean place and the bathrooms are the best. Their vending machine has pics, batteries, drums keys and snickers, what more could a musician want. Solo rates are $10 bucks or buy the solo card & you save money. Lots of rehearsal specials with renting 2 hours and getting one free. Rooms actually look way better in person than they do on the website. I'm giving this place a 5. Great vibe. read more
