My 16-year old decided he wanted to spend all of his summer job money on a Keytar. As a child of the '80s, I thought this was a fantastic idea. Plus, I'd rather he buy a Keytar than Fentanyl. He said he wanted the Roland AX Edge. I took him to the first place that came to mind -- the Giant Electronics Store with All the Things. They carried them -- but not in white, the color my son wanted. My son was sad. This made me sad. I fired up Yelp and discovered a Big Music Chain Store was nearby. We went there. They too had them in stock, but not in white. My son was sad again. This made me sad again. I fired up Yelp and saw we were close to a place called Rogue Music, so I called. Did they carry the Roland AX Edge Keytar? Yes, they did. Did they have it in white? Yes, they did! My son was happy. This made me happy. We dashed over. The store is the quintessential New York City store experience: Many, many things packed into a small space. It was all business, no flash. Stacks of synths, keyboards and rack electronics. This is the kind of store where people who know their stuff come to get their stuff. No doubt many members of famous bands had once stood in the very same three-foot square space that my son and I were currently occupying (as I said, the place is packed with goodies). The owner calculated the price in his head and used a pen to write the receipt on a piece of paper -- like my son's new Keytar, it was a lovely throwback to the 1980s. read more

I had a bad experience with Clark who repairs keyboards. In the end he made the condition of my keyboard worse and the reason why I'm giving two stars instead of one is that perhaps he could have fixed what he broke if I was willing to take it back, and I'd like to give the business itself the benefit of the doubt that their information and service in purchasing gear lives up to a very good reputation, *my* experience was with an old keyboard that was on the line of whether it could be fixed or couldn't, and Clark was honest that it was a risk. However, I brought the keyboard in with a power supply that wasn't its original power supply and although I hadn't had a problem with it Clark was extremely argumentative that there's no way it could have ever worked because it's "just physics." He had to be right, and wouldn't let me finish any of my statements or questions. Since he told me there was an 85% chance he could fix one key that was broken, I agreed to give a $40 deposit but a day or two later I found the same model at Guitar Center and wanted to take the keyboard back if he hadn't started to work on it. I left a message for him to call and let me know if he had started work on it and was told he'd call right after his cigarette break, I called again and couldn't get ahold of him and went back in person where he told me he had called me. However, days later there is still no record of any calls or messages, and I suspect he was not being honest. When I took the keyboard home I found that the key immediately next to the broken key was now very stiff and hard to play, so his diagnostic process with the $40 deposit resulted in worsening the condition of his keyboard. I would have gone back to ask him to fix this if he hadn't rubbed me so wrong in the overall communication. I disputed the charge with my American Express and my account was credited and I don't know if this was Rogue that agreed to refund me. read more

If you are looking for great classic synths like I do, you can't beat the selection here and if they don't have it, they'll find it for ya. Also, if you are trading or selling gear, they are the fairest around. I just made a massive trade-in/sale of gear to them and I was able to make enough to pay very little out-of-pocket to get a great new hard-to-get synth that they helped me find and obtain. Dope little store full of quality used gear. Must stop if you're looking for guitar pedals - great selection, especially for that. They also had a ton of synths, drum machines, and rackmount effects units. I know folks like to complain about the service/attitude here but if you don't show up acting like an idiot you probably won't be treated like one. I've only dealt with them a handful of times over the past ten years but have never had any complaints. I would recommend them before any other vendor for a repair job. Recently they fixed my much-beloved MPC for a real fair price and had it done within 48 hours. They get an interesting collection of used gear as well, if that's your thing. I brought my Korg keyboard in for repairs. They did a quick diagnosis, then called back a few days later to confirm and let me know that the part were back ordered from the manufacturer, so it could be 6-8 weeks. Ok, nothing I can do about that, I thought. Then I got a call back the following week - it was ready! They had found the parts! Very reasonable price, too. Based on this experience I would highly recommend Rogue for instrument repairs. Dropped off a used wah pedal I purchased second hand to have the pot replaced. Talked to Clay and he provided a quote for how much it would cost to get it. I called back a few days later and Clay explained that he had reached out to the manufacturer, who volunteered to do the repair for free. Clay said he'd only charge me for the cost of shipping. Obviously delighted that the repair would cost me a lot less than the initial quote, and impressed that Clay had gone to the trouble of reaching out to the manufacturer. They kept my synthesizer for over a week before saying they couldn't figure out the problem and had tried everything. I googled it (first result!) and gave them the solution and they said they had to order a part and it wouldn't be ready for a week. I took it back, but they would not return my deposit. Had an excellent experience at Rogue Music. Had a very old synthesizer model that needed a simple repair. Everywhere was looking to charge me astronomical hourly rates for repair which I thought was excessive since this was a simple fix. They had the most competitive rate so I went with them. Dropped it off on a Thursday and it was ready by the next Tuesday. They even had to order parts so I don't know how they finished so quickly. Besides that, the guys in there are extremely friendly and have a great sense of humor. I'll definitely be back the next time I need a repair. Highly recommend! read more

I stopped in here after spending some time in 30th Street Guitars. I understand why people would say that the guys have an attitude, but the guy behind the counter didn't bother me at all. He repeatedly referred some kids who came in towards Guitar Center when they said that they were looking for a $50 guitar in one case and a cheapo mic in the other. When I told him I wasn't knowledgeable about guitar pedals he dropped a similar line on me, but when pushed to talk to me a little about what he looks for in a pedal he was happy to spend 10 minutes talking through the gear that he had as well as his more general thoughts on the topic. From my limited experience, this place is worth a look as they seem to have decent gear and knowledgeable (if not the friendliest) staff. read more

Rogue Music is a great store, and you're bound to find something really cool in there. While they do have some nice guitars and basses, the keyboards and synths are really worth checking out. There's a good chance they will have a rare piece of gear like a Memorymoog or a Prophet 10. However, they always have mainstays like Tritons and JV-1080s in stock. I have bought a fair amount of gear at Rogue, and I am always happy with the experience. My only qualm is sometimes the price on a piece of gear will be on the high side, but the good news is an employee will knock it down for you if you let them know politely. Their employees are cool and very nice to talk with. When I bought my Yamaha DX7IIFD, they threw in headphones, a gig bag, an instrument cable, and two cartridges. I try to catch the bus and head up to Rogue a few times a year, and I always come home with a nice piece of gear. read more

My favorite music store in the city by a wide margin. The best prices and people I have dealt with when it comes to synths, drum machines, gig bags, the works (I'm certain the same is true of guitars and basses, though I don't play either). So often in my experience it is not unusual to come away from dealings with staff at a musical instrument store feeling like one has just been hustled and burnt by a noxious used car salesman. The exact opposite is true of the Rogue staff, who are extraordinarily friendly, knowledgeable, honest, conversational, and pressure-free. As other reviews have stated, Rogue is head and shoulders above Armen's, both in terms of their pricing and dealings with the customer. I will never ever recommend this place ever to my enemies. They break things instead of fixing them. You put a deposit and they will never returt it. They promise you you a date to pick your instrument but when you pick up your instrument they'll say their common excuse...they'll tell you that they are still ordering some parts...again...and again...and again...until you get tiredand decided to get your instrument back, you'll end up finding out that your instrument has a lot of new digged holes because they tried to fix their mess and won't be able to put the parts to the original place because it's messed up...and the worst thing is you'll find out that your missing a lot of parts, wrong screws are attached, wrong screws are missing...etc. And some of the things that you'll buy might not be working after a few times of using them. The services that was given to my instruments, to my friends, and the customers i met there made me think that some of the good reviews here were just made by them to cover up their negative feedbacks. Me, my friends, and my ex bandmates really agree with their negative feedbacks because we are all their victims...most especially on the synth service, guitar pedals and electronics that we bought...even the speakers actually. And speaking of attitude...ofcourse they are not rude to everyone...but they are rude to some. Just like the they fix only few things but they break more than what they fix...most especially their committments and promises. You better watch out folks!!! read more

I'm a guitar player. I usually check here when I am looking for something used that I'd prefer not to buy new from Guitar Center or Sam Ash. It's really a hodge podge of all sorts of used gear and newer stuff too. The inventory changes and you can always look at their website to see what just came in. Plenty of pedals to choose from. More intermediate and beginner guitars but once in while you will find something more high end. Can also trade gear in here. Always treated fairly. Friendly bunch of guys. Helpful. I much nicer experience than some of the big box stores. read more

A couple years ago I took my synth to these guys for a minor repair. I told them I needed it back for a gig soon and I wouldn't leave it if they thought it would take long. They assured me the repair would be done that afternoon. I called the next day and it wasn't done. They were waiting on a part. I called a few days later, still not done, no part. I told them I would come in and pick up the synth and just bring it back some other time. I came in a few hours later and my synth was waiting for me at the counter. I opened the road case to look at it and noticed it was partly disassembled and missing several screws. I asked for the screws back. The guy who was working dug around in some bins and grabbed a few mismatched screws. I told him they weren't the right ones. He shrugged his shoulders and started helping other customers. I left in anger with my synth. Later I discovered some of the internal cables were unplugged. I plugged it back in and got it working but to this day it's still missing the original factory screws in the outer shell. It still pisses me off anytime I look at the back of my synth. Avoid this place like the plague. read more

Was very disappointed in their repair shop and crew. If you need a repair - do not go to those guys. I needed to remove a dust from inside of my 5 years old Korg keyboard. It was exposed to new york dust for few years and the dust started affecting the sound and response of the keys. I researched the issue online (it's a common issue), and found out that the keyboard has to be disassembled and cleaned. Inspite the fact that Rogue is certified center for Korgs and I was ready to pay their hourly rate - they proved to be not helpful at all. They tried to assure me that it should be some parts that they have to order, they refused to do the exact estimates of how much time they need to work on it, and when I asked them just to disassemble and clean, they became unfriendly and rude. (One guy just said - we dont do it like that and turn his back on me. When I asked to talk to technician - they answered, that technicians do not talk with the clients). ..etc. Basically, if you need a repair - avoid this shop. read more
