We ran over at the first winery, and Arnaldo-Caprai was very understanding and gave us a warm welcome even though we were over an hour late. The winery is on a large and sprawling estate with a spacious wine tasting room. Our tour was approximately 30 minutes long - we visited the various areas of the winery where they ferment the grapes, bottle the wine and also wandered a little bit into the vineyards. Our wine tour ended with wine tasting in a private tasting room and lunch. The lunch was the perfect lunch to accompany the wines - it was a light lunch of salumni, cheese, bruschetta, panzanella and grilled vegetables. We tasted four wines, including an extra taste of a sparkling wine that Arnaldo-Caprai makes. The Rosso Riserva that we tasted was the universal favorite amongst the group, and we bought a fair amount of wine to enjoy both while in Italy and to have shipped back to the U.S. The wine was all very reasonably priced.

They are located down a country lane in the hills northeast of Todi, with beautiful vistas in all directions, and a fantastic view of Todi perched on its hilltop not far away. The vines march off in their rows; the old monastery that once owned the land sits quietly on the hillside below. Umbria stands in the shadow of the more famous Tuscan wines, but Peppucci's 4 offerings are all lovely. The presentation is thorough and comprehensive but not tedious. The wines are served with a nice assortment of bread, cheese, sliced salami, and olive oil. Speaking of olive oil, Peppucci also makes and sells its own. People reading this will fall into 2 categories: those who say "big deal. Olive oil. They're all the same, right?" and those that have learned about the mystical qualities of high-grade extra virgin olive oil, which can transform ordinary foods into culinary delights. This place sells that kind of olive oil. We left a few Euros lighter, having ordered cases of wine and olive oil to be shipped stateside, plus carrying some bottles and cans for use on the remainder of our journey, but it was money well spent. The only thing that might have improved it would have been a tour of the wine-making facility and process, but I have done that elsewhere so I was ok without it.

But still me had a memorable time and hope to return one day. We opened the last of the bottles we ordered last night in celebration of our daughter's visit. We try to have a bottle whenever she visits because she was there with us. Memories that will be with us forever. The wines were very good, by the way. This place is amazing…read more We'd been to Spello before and had planned on going to another restaurant we really like, BUT it was closed for lunch the day we arrived. No worries, went to Enoteca Properzio and were pleasantly surprised. The owner Roberto, who was incredibly warm and friendly, had a table set up in the courtyard for us. We had a white wine, three red wines, and a desert wine with lunch. All were very nice, and Roberto took the time to explain each one and show what kind of accolades they had received in various wine publications (the most recent one was actually this month). Lunch started with a plate of crostinis: bread for two types of olive oil, bruschetta, black truffle spread, white truffle spread, pesto spread, and sun dried tomato spread. Bean soup followed, and then a plate of cured meats and pecorino cheeses. All delicious. Ended with biscotti and cafe. We did not end up buying any of the wines we tried (from the enoteca part of the operation), because they turned out to be WAY out of our price range. That did not mean the bill for lunch was crazy though. All and all we paid 40 euro per person. Highly recommended. We will be back next time we're in Spello.

Very expensive wine tasting for the region, yet they served some wines opened 5 days earlier…read more 40-60 Euros per tasting Great history of Paolo and his architect son. Unique place. Delicious orange wine. Getting kooky with biological and unfiltered labels. Do what works! Orange wine is amazing golden treasure. Sagrantinos are excellent. Maybe a 92. But I did not like that I could see the off color, mentioned it, they told me it is a 5 day old opened wine but "corked fast" but still served it off. Lots of sediment and sugar in their biological wines. This does not impress. It just makes them passionate. Overall, there are family wineries down the street who serve 2005 sagrantinos for 0 tasting fee and not more than one day old, lol and score 94 for 35-45 euros. Paolo bea charges 95 euros for its 2016 sagrantino, so it is overpriced by more than 2x compared to its neighbors. Additionally , they are very arrogant about their power in the wine industry thus feel they can overcharge to American importers. Overall, a good experience but go to other places as well to buy.

Their approach is somewhat unusual in that the 2006 Paolo Bea Rosso de Veo Sagrantino tastes more like something from Burgundy than Italy. Im no somm so you would have fooled me if I wasnt told otherwise. As a lover of Burgundy however, it's hard not to like the wine even though Sagrantino is not a grape Im familiar with.
