We had only one night in Brussels this last trip to Europe and decided to have dinner at Bocconi. This Italian restaurant is located in the Hotel Amigos in Brussels near the Grand Place. We arrived at about 7:00 with no reservations on a Friday evening. We were asked to come back in about 45 minutes and we could be accommodated with a table for 3. No issues at all with waiting.
The restaurant has an elegant feel to it. White tablecloths, attentive servers, people dressed fairly nicely although to be honest I did not feel uncomfortable at all showing up jeans on this very rainy night in Brussels.
The menu was diverse enough. In retrospect, I wish I would have tried something with a bit more Italian flair, maybe pasta or seafood, to get a better perspective on the food. For an appetizer, we had scallops wrapped in prosciutto with a tasty glaze.. The flavor on the scallops was outstanding, but I found the scallops themselves a bit undercooked.
For entrees, my husband chose the beef cheeks, his son chose the baked suckling pig and I chose the pan fried beef filet with spinach and green pepper sauce. The baked suckling pig, served with roasted potatoes and eggplant was proclaimed delicious. I tried the beef cheek and I am not sure what I was expecting, but this was very much like a tender beef stew. I honestly was glad I did not order this dish. My filet was prepared correctly, the green pepper sauce was a nice addition, but if I have to be honest in that there was nothing about the meal that really stood out.
For dessert, we ordered the chocolate fondant and passion fruit sorbet to share. The chocolate fondant was a pudding I believe - very similar to a molten cake. The tartness of the passion fruit sorbet provided a nice contrast with the sweetness of the chocolate. This was delicious and the highlight of my meal.
The wine list had plenty of options. We ended up choosing an Italian Barolo to enjoy with our meal. The wine was fruitier than I expected for a Barolo - not the fault of the restaurant at all, just a less than stellar choice on my part. Prices were moderate for both meals and wines. I think I would give this restaurant another chance, but would definitely rethink my choice on meal if I did. read more
