Last night it was the sweet potato mash that had been replaced with a (perfect) ordinary potato mash. It was served without any reference to the substitution. Granted that it would only be half a star reduction if I could... For an establishment that gets it so right in nearly every respect it is sad but I look forward to my next meal there.

One of the view places in Corralejo that are not a pricy tourist trap edit: already commented on the owner but went there again recently and could not believe it. Place was busy, but quite enough seats available when I arrived with a group of 10. Would have to re-arrange a few seats/tables. Went to the owner to ask if that's OK and after telling her how many people we are she just sent us away because she "did not have enough dishes for 10". That's a no go. You are supposed to have enough plates for all the seats you have at least. And sending customers away.... Down from 5 to 2 and I will never go again. Einer der wenigen Orte, der keine teure Touristenfalle ist edit: Hab die Besitzerin schon als eigenartig/unfreundlich erwähnt, aber der letzte Besuch war mein letzter. He mentioned that we was going to visit a burger bar and my response was unenthused as I had visions of another famous burger chain bar but he reassured me that these burgers would be like nothing I've ever tasted before and he was right (ok, yes, my boyfriend is right some of the time)! It's located down a lovely side street which originally used to be the main road and is an intimate setting with just a few tables (this was originally a tapas bar) and the British couple, Garry and Sarah who bought it have kept most of the original interior and added a few personal touches. I must say what lovely, friendly, chatty people they were and made everyone who walked in feel like a long standing friend (most of them actually were). Not only did we sample the best, mouthwatering burgers (twice) but received a lowdown on the Island's highlights. I had to fight off wandering hands as my boyfriend tried to sample my burger. Never have I been more territorial about my food. I had the four cheeses variety which really did melt in my mouth and then a few days later, tried the Caribbean which had caramelised peach, yum.

It's quaint and comfortable and just off the Main Street which itself is only in the hundreds of yards. We got coffees and Spanish doughnuts, which are among the best we've ever eaten (not just here but doughnuts are mostly fabulous all over Spain). I wouldn't thank you for a Dunkin' donut or Krispy Kreme these days (6 times the price of a Spanish doughnut) but I'd polish off a few of these Spanish treats any day. Coffees too were darn good here. Now this might come as a surprise but there's not much to do in Arrecife - they have a few forts, a lot of restaurants offering Canarian cuisine and real scenic beauty so it's perfect for R&R: rest and relaxation. There's one Main Street with shops and cafes and at least one fairly decent supermarket but prices are creeping up here thanks to the 47th and most ignoble base creature ever to be given a country's credit card. He (and his lackeys) couldn't demean or debase that once great office any further than he already has, even if he really tried. Now he's waist stuck in the slowsand of the Islamic world. I'm not sure he sees he's caught by their salmon fishing technique of negotiating. They'll reel him in and just when he thinks it's job done they'll let him out and keep repeating reel in/let go until exhaustion - with no deal - they have no intention of making a deal. They bet on the fact that they have time - he doesn't - so unless he does something really militarily epic (not just a catch phrase) oil will not fall and market volatility will continue hitting investment and trade. No country for old men and no country to be governed by old men.

This restaurant is now owned and run by an Irish couple (Chris and Emer King) and as an Irish person, I feel proud and privileged to have eaten there. The restaurant is slightly off the beaten path and not really easy to find, it is situated just up the hill from the main harbour of the old town of Puerto del Carmen and actually right beside the other famous Irish/Polish Bozenas Restaurant. As we weren't overly hungry when we ate here last night we decided just to go for mains followed by a delicious dessert, judging by the menu! To our surprise we were happy we made that choice as we were presented with a complimentary sample of a mouthwatering caramelised onion and roast beef tartlet and sweet popcorn served with a selection of freshly baked breads. For mains we chose oven roasted chicken with black pudding and Parma ham stuffing and a red wine herb jus, plus king prawns sautéed in garlic, ginger and fresh chilli with a tomato concasse fresh herb and sticky rice. Accompanying both of those deliciously tasting dishes was a selection of perfectly cooked fresh vegetables and layered potatoes. For dessert we thoroughly enjoyed equally delicious and mouthwatering chocolate mousse and a truly amazing sticky toffee pudding, oozing with runny toffee sauce from its centre....served with a tiny ice cream cone! They had a good wine list and we enjoyed a half bottle of a Spanish cab. sauv, priced at around €8.50 which appears somewhat pricier than normal in the vicinity, but probably better quality! As we were presented with the bill of approx €56 for all of the above (again a little pricy but not for that type of food and service) we were given a complimentary glass of cava and tiny little salted caramel chocolates! Wonderful friendly and efficient service, lovely atmosphere and comfortable seating in a small but secluded terrace outside as well as inside space. There are many good eateries in the town, but if you are going for the gourmet experience, this is the place to go. And even though this (both times) was the most expensive meal of our stay, is was also the best value.... both the food and the service was simply top notch. And still a bargain deal compared to danish prices. As vegans we often get something from the menu minus the meat, fish or cheese. We had heard, that they at Kristian's Restaurant could make vegan food so we went and asked, what we could get. We were told, that we had to book a day in advance, and get whatever the chef came up with. We took the chance, and booked a table. When we came there, we found out, that we got a five course dinner created just for us, for only around twice the price as we payed for 'run of the mill' standard starter and main course at other restaurants around. When we came back the second time, we got a totally different five course dinner. This place surpassed any expectation. Remember that if you want to order vegan, you have to tell them at day in advance, and be prepared to eat whatever the chef and owner Christopher comes up with. But rest assured, you will not be sorry :-)

No food, save from the odd snacky bit. They've got super comfy chairs that you can lounge away in and while away the hours while looking out over the glistening sea. It must have been sheer luck, then, that we happened upon this place one fateful night. Situated on the marina, this class establishment looks out on the Atlantic Ocean. We were quickly seated and offered a glass of the choice house wine. Since we were quite ravenous, we chose to forego the menu and asked for whatever was fresh that night. This resulted in me ordering the Cherne, a local fish inhabiting the many caves and shipwrecks on the sea floor here in the Canaries. What a wonderful fish this turned out to be! Its flesh is meaty, succulent, almost chickenlike in its consistency. It came accompanied by the ubiquitous Papas Arrugadas. No punishment by any means since, in my opinion, these wrinkled, nutty potatoes are the most important contribution to Spanish cuisine in the canaries. They've got a lovely buttery, almost claylike structure. Since my girls were getting a bit rowdy at this point we had to turn down dessert. I made do with a double espresso, which was fine, especially considering the fact that the Spanish usually can't brew a cup to save their lives... It was served, as is customary on the Canary Islands, by the local spirit of choice, Ron Miel, which is essentially honey-infused rum. Staff was very professional and accommodating, which seems to be the standard over here. All in all I had a very pleasant experience at la Casa Roja.
