It was just too intimidating I guess. But this gym helped me overcome all of that. A continually spreading midsection and my making it into my 50s made me realize I had to do something. Several of my athlete idols had "found" Crossfit and preached the virtues. They loved it after having done all kinds of workouts. My friend attend one of the free Saturday workout and found out that an "Executive" beginner class was starting the following week so we started together. The Executive class is a group of 5-8 people three days a week. Staci will guide you thru the work out of the day, (WOD) all the workout lingo and help you do the workout routines with good form. If you have a particular problem doing any exercise, they modify it for your ability. You "compete" against the people in your group at times, so having a good group and a good group dynamic is important. Having some friends there in the beginning with me helped. There is a lot of encouragement and camaraderie and I never felt like I was being talked down to. Just because someone younger or who had been doing it longer could do more or do it faster, it was ok.

I gave written notice before the billing cycle started and even offered to pay for the 30-day period. Despite that, they refused to freeze my membership unless I submitted a doctor's note -- something that is not required anywhere in the contract for a freeze. The only part of the contract that even mentions a doctor's note refers to permanent disability or death for cancellation, not for a temporary freeze like in my case. Back in 2021, they froze my membership without asking for any documentation, and I know other members who've had the same. So clearly, they apply their rules selectively and withhold help when it matters most. Instead of treating me with fairness, they sent my account to collections for $860. This is not just poor customer service -- it feels like they're trying to profit off people's misfortune. If you're considering joining, do not sign a long-term contract. They are not helpful, not transparent, and not flexible when life happens.

The decision to join Ctown was the best thing to happen to me in my time there. I had not done crossfit before and had been a lifelong in and out of the gym kind of guy. Never fully committing for longer than a few months at a time. From the minute I walked in and met Larry the owner, I knew my life was about to change. Ctown focuses on form first and foremost and under the leadership of head coach R.E. has built a solid reputation and family like atmosphere that was more welcoming than I could ever imagine. The group sizes varied, but even at its largest of 15 you still got individualized attention from the coaches throughout the workout. Being new, I was worried about not being able to keep up with the workouts, but scalability is also important to Ctown. The coaches offered modifications for almost every workout, still pushing you to try and complete it as prescribed. I was only there for a few months, but got into the best shape of my life and was driven by not only the coaches, but my fellow athletes. Yes, you do truly feel like an athlete, no matter how you look. There's no egos at Ctown, everyone is in it together and you build a great comradery that is driven by the caring personalities of the coaches who drive and inspire you as you go. I met lifelong friends in only a few months, got into the best shape of my life and never felt like I was part of a "cult" like atmosphere like some skeptics of crossfit would say. I owe R.E., Larry and the team at Ctown much gratitude for taking in a new kid in town and turning out a dedicated, more motivated and better individual in the end. Their head coach was very inviting, greeting me immediately and had a great background in crossfit and powerlifting. Their box was very clean, had the newest equipment and a very fun and welcoming community. I'd definitely recommend this box, whether your a seasoned crossfitter or new to crossfit as they will be more than willing to work with you where you're at. So happy I picked this gym.

FREE PARKING -- Parking downtown is a pain so I'm happy that BrownsFit gym validates parking tickets at the attached garage. You won't pay for parking which is awesome. MEMBERSHIP -- I have a corporate membership which means I have a slight discount based on where I work. Membership is month to month (no contract) so if you want to cancel, tell them 10 days before your next gym payment is due and they will cancel your membership. WHAT YOU GET -- They offer group fitness classes (which are included in the membership price), they have cardio equipment such as ellipticals, treadmills, and bikes. They have dumbbells and barbells for those who enjoy lifting weights. There are male and female changing rooms with showers and toilets. *My FAVOURITE machine to use so far has been the Jacobs Ladder. I had never know about this cardio equipment until joining BrownsFit. It is intense and you only need 3 mins to feel the BURN. The Saturday morning BOOTCAMP classes are intense but really good. FREE MASSAGES -- Members can use a massage chair (3 are available) for 10 minutes without any extra charge. I enjoy using the massage chair after a good workout. LAYOUT -- The main floor is huge and has all the cardio and weight equipments. There are TV's lined up on the wall by the windows. They also have 2 fitness exercise rooms at the back of the gym where all the group fitness classes are held. One of the rooms has the spin bikes in them laid out at the back of the wall but there is still space in the room to do your own workout. I'm happy the bikes don't take up the whole room. This room also has weights and other equipment in the corner. Bootcamp classes, yoga, etc, are held in this room. The other fitness group class room is smaller and has equipment in it such as weights, ropes, yoga mats, etc. I love using the group exercise class rooms for my workouts when if there are no fitness classes scheduled. Overall, I would recommend Browns Fit gym. The corporate membership is less than $50 a month and I believe regular membership is under $60/month. They are usually pretty packed on Mondays and Fridays as she has a strong and loyal following. I moved to the area a year ago and signed up with her. I took her classes and was hooked. I literally craft my life schedule so I can attend as often as possible. I have spinal and lower back problems. She is a very experienced and highly qualified personal trainer. Her instruction made me stronger (cardio endurance and muscle strength), leaner and bikini ready! Also significantly improved (decreased) my back pain as I now have (visible) abs and much stronger core and balance. I am in my early 50s. I've gotten so many compliments on my physique, even told I pass for my 30s. A lot of older women in class, but don't let that fool you-these ladies blew me away with their endurance. Over time, you realize you are getting stronger and realize the improvements. Highly recommend. Oh they also offer yoga at 6:15 on Thursday evenings. Erin the yoga teacher is an experienced professional. Nikki teaches Sunday morning at 9a, and is also a very experienced fitness trainer and yoga instructor. Great classes to get invigorated and a solid stretch which is great for muscle recovery. Both are great for stress relief as well ‍

YDM is open 24 hours, it has 1, 3, 6 and 12 month membership options so you're not locked in for a year with no other options. It's not a large place but it has the equipment I need to get to my goals. It's a gym set up for personal training, that is probably 75% of the business they do there if I had to guess. If a trainer is what you're looking for I would totally recommend you to stop in and talk the owner Tom. If you're looking to be on your own and you just want a gym this is not a bad choice but its not as glamorous as a chain gym. It all comes down to the amenities you are looking for in a gym.
