First Hotel Grand - The corridors

The First Hotel Grand Odense is a hotel with an impressive history dating back to the late 19th…read morecentury. Over the decades, it has been expanded and modernized, giving the building a unique blend of historic charm and contemporary comfort. However, the various additions and renovations have resulted in somewhat long and cumbersome pathways within the hotel, as well as an inconsistent look and feel--a minor drawback that also contributes to the hotel's character. Room & Amenities My room was spacious, featuring a comfortable couch and a safe. Unfortunately, there was no refrigerator, which would have been practical for longer stays. The bed was very comfortable and inviting for relaxation. However, the lack of air conditioning was an issue: with the high temperatures during my stay, the room became quite warm. To make matters worse, one window could not be opened--and it wasn't repaired during my stay--limiting ventilation and exacerbating the heat. Breakfast & Service The continental breakfast was a highlight: a generous buffet in a beautiful, historic dining room with a good selection of local specialties. The only downside was the single coffee machine, which led to short waits during peak times. The service was consistently friendly and helpful--from the quick check-in and check-out to the small attentions throughout my stay. The staff made my experience pleasant. Location & Surroundings The central location of the hotel is ideal for exploring Odense. However, it was a bit noisy on the weekend due to the open windows (and the lack of air conditioning), as the street in front of the hotel is quite lively. A clearly marked unloading zone for guests with luggage would have been helpful, as it wasn't immediately obvious where to find it. Leisure Facilities The fitness center was decently equipped, though towels and a drink dispenser would have enhanced the comfort. Conclusion: First Hotel Grand Odense is a charming hotel that impresses with its historic atmosphere, central location, and excellent service. A few minor issues--such as the lack of air conditioning, the broken window, or the long corridors--slightly detract from the overall experience but are not enough to discourage a recommendation. With a few adjustments, a stay here could be even more perfect.

We had a couple minor hiccups, but nothing terrible, and they were fixed fairly quickly. We did get warm during the night, however, and the provided fan didn't do enough for us to sleep as comfortably as we would have liked. One little note: At 10:00 on the dot, breakfast is over! They clear the food faster than a sonic boom!

While it has 33 rooms- know that the front desk staff may also be serving you your dinner, renting you a bike or even making you a drink as they do everything with a small staff here. The room I had was a double and faced the patio out front. No air conditioning but the windows open to let in the sea breezes and you may be able together a small fan from the front desk if they have any available. The beds are comfortable , Internet is free, and there was even a couch and sitting area along with a desk in the room I had. A delicious breakfast is also included in your rate with eggs and bacon, breads, meats and cheeses, fresh fruit and individual coffee pots you can take to your table. The bathroom while small, had good water pressure but be careful of the step. The tile looks flat but there was a step down to the shower that fooled me every time!! On one of the nights I was there - the owner and her mother cooked a beautiful pork roast dinner for our group of 18 complete with salad, glazed potatoes, and a kind of "fruit soup" for dessert served with heavy cream that was out of this world!. You can rent bikes for the day from the front desk which is a great way to see AEros. Just find the bike out front that you want, look for the number on it and ask for the key at the desk. The cost is about 150 dk per day. I loved that they have a patio out front where you can sit and have drinks, or even take your breakfast outside. And the location is just up from the ferry landing and close to the grocery store and most if the restaurants on the island. And if you want to rent a private cottage for your family- they have a number of those available as well. A great choice is you find yourself on AEros island!!

Its right in the center of town across from the Cathedral. A short walk to the train station, tons of shopping and eating and right near the canal. There is quality inside and out, from the beautiful historic Elevator in the lobby to the mural covered walls depicting danish history to the finely appointed rooms and en-suite baths. I had a standard single which was one of their smaller rooms and it was fine. I never felt cramped. There's no noise issues. The included Breakfast offered an extensive selection of delicious food. I have stayed here twice (appox 20 days) and would definitely stay again.

How you take it is completely up to you, but at beginning I was a little creeped. Room is descent size, especially for building of this age. My room was a twin, bed was comfortable but only one small pillow. Work desk has pretty of space to sores laptop, note pad, etc. Shower and toilet are right next to beach other separated by very tiny glass wall, and almost impossible to keep shower water from spreading to the toilet area, not smart design. Room is covered with many painting, decoration, etc. a little overwhelming. Internet connection was superb. Make sure you obtain password at front. Breakfast was good, had patently of selection that you would expect from any hotel with. Choice of hot meal and cold. I think they are all home made...breads were really good. Fitness center was nicely equipped with cardio machine and pretty of free weights. The downside was I couldn't control room temp and was warm, had to open window all night. Parking is difficult (also the city was going through huge construction everywhere so I just couldn't get to hotel). Overall this is a very nice little hotel and would recommend.
