I have left my number with the receptionist, I left my number on the voicemail this morning (which she claims she never got) and if I didn't call back, she would have just done nothing. Since the other office hadn't called her back, she didn't have a fax number. I found it in a minute using Google. When are people going to accept accountability for their actions and maybe take a little initiative. With what we pay to see doctors, it would be helpful if their staff cared that they are dealing with actual people and not patient files! ******************************************************************************* Dr. Martin, from all the doctors I've had to see, seems to be genuine and sincere with her care for patients. I would recommend her (and only her). However, she's based out of Concord and is only in Vallejo on Fridays. The issue is her staff! Valerie, the new patient coordinator is extremely rude. I had to speak to a manager just to book the appointment. On 7/6/18, I called to ask for a referral to Sacramento. Anyone who knows Vallejo, knows it's a horrible city and being forced to go there and then sit in traffic back to the Fairfield (and the rest of Solano Co) is nothing short of a nightmare (esp. on a Friday)! I mean, I'm supposed to have a say in my doctor and my care, but Sutter refuses to allow that to happen; esp. in the city I live vs making me travel completely out of my way. Who needs to work? After all, my medical bills must be paid by the medical fairy...I digress.... I was told by the receptionist, someone would call me back. On Wednesday (7/11/18), after not hearing from anyone, I called again, at 12:15 to follow-up. The receptionist couldn't reach the referral coordinator. Told me she was probably on lunch, but she would call me back. I call back later, at 3:55 p.m., the receptionist tries the billing coordinator again. Apparently, she hasn't been in all day. I explained, very calmly, that waiting all this time to hear back, when communication is not only expected, but important, is completely unacceptable. Her response is they get busy. Great...it's been four days....still unacceptable. I was told I'd receive a call the next morning. Did I receive the call? NOPE! So, I call again. Same receptionist. She said she spoke with the referral coordinator at 8:45 that morning and let her know she needed to call me. I had to leave a voicemail for the referral coordinator, because the receptionist just put me there, without giving me the option of speaking to someone else. I decided I had enough...I called back to speak to Dr. Martin herself. Apparently, she's out of the office today and tomorrow. My take on this is the referral coordinator is dodging my calls because she forgot to speak with the doctor on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday...we won't mention the previous Friday as the other opportunity. So, here I am...stage 3...wanting to see a doctor, that doesn't require me to go to the ghetto and be associated with a sub-par facility like Sutter Solano, and I can't get one person from the office to return a call. Doctors are only as good as their staff and since the staff is barring access to said doctor, I've been left with no choice but to file a grievance with my insurance carrier (not holding my breath on that either), but at least it's on record.

She patiently explained that with a Stage III diagnosis it is medically necessary and that they are able to treat and prevent most side effects. With her help, I experienced mild side effects and was still fairly mobile. I did lose all my hair which was heartbreaking but she did tell me that would happen. I was able to email her with questions or concerns and she always got back to me even if it was a weekend or evening. My nurses were absolutely wonderful and made me feel as comfortable as possible during my treatment. The admin staff is also friendly and helpful. This facility desperately needs a bigger parking lot but besides that my rating says it all!

However, this is important information: After a 45 minute conversation, Dr. Shain diagnosed my 9 year old as being Bipolar, and immediately prescribed them a mood disorder drug. The drugs caused my child to begin having severe, medication-induced psychotic breaks. After several terrifying months of this, my child's symptoms dramatically worsened. I asked Dr. Shain if we could wean them off and try something else. He was very reluctant, dismissed my concerns, and suggested we just pile on more meds. When I pushed back, he told me that, if I really wanted to go back to zero with the meds, I should just cut them out immediately, without titrating them down. We ended up in the hospital, after a severe, terrifying meltdown. No one there could understand why our psychiatrist would advise us to abruptly cut our child off mood disorder drugs I proceeded to have my child evaluated at Stanford, and found a new psychiatrist. My child is not bipolar. They are autistic, with depression and severe anxiety. They are extremely sensitive to medications - which is apparently common with autism. A year later, and my child has stabilized beautifully. They still struggle with depression and anxiety, yes, but I no longer have to hold them down to keep them from trying to claw their own eyes out. We haven't had any psychotic episodes since we stopped giving them the wrong meds, and had them properly diagnosed I feel bad about posting this. I do not think Dr. Shain is a bad person - I feel certain that he cares about his patients very much. However, he made catastrophically bad judgement calls where my child was concerned. I don't like to think about what my child's life would be like if we had followed Dr. Shain's recommendations.

He gave me 3 hours notice on a Friday and I told him that unfortunately we couldn't make that time and would like to schedule an appointment the following week. He sounded frustrated and said he going to be out on vacation. No problem, me thinks. So I tell him we can be in touch when he returns. Thankfully, in that time, we found a very professional psychiatrist (Dr. Zuberi in Lafayette) that we were very happy with. Yeah! 2.5 weeks later, I get a call at 9:30 on a Monday night from Dr. Shain. After asking rudely if we were going to schedule an appointment with him "or not," I told him that while he was out, a therapist was found and we are going to go with him. He curtly replied, "you know, you are a piece of work," and HUNG UP. Amazing. No idea where that came from - he acts as if I stood him up for an appointment or had gone round and round trying to schedule something, but this as our second conversation. Once I was able to fully grok what just happened (have never been spoken to by a "professional" in this manner), I immediately tried to call him back, only to get voicemail. This is so unfortunate and inappropriate on so many levels. For a THERAPIST to actually be mad at us for finding a doctor we were happy with is, at best, disgusting. I can only imagine if we would have selected him - we would need a psychiatrist for our psychiatrist! Update: I should say that he came to me as a referral by a trusted friend, and he did help her family. So while I'm glad to hear that he has helped someone, I question anyone's judgement - especially a therapist - who thinks they can speak to others in the way he spoke with me.

Even my insurance company apologized on their behalf stating they should have been the ones to contact insurance because how would I know what questions to ask, I'm just the patient. The insurance company put me on hold while they called the office directly and told the office manager that they needed to handle, and it's not on the patient. Basically after a lot of back and forth the office said there was nothing they can do. Didn't try to order the correct test, didn't try to work with the insurance company. Nothing. Also the doctors office is a renovated house. The doors to the rooms have huge gaps and everyone can hear your business.

When I called this office and politely asked the MA for their name, I was met with attitude and a snarky "How may I help you?" simply for asking a basic question - he tone and unprofessionalism were what stood out. Upon further review, this doesn't appear to be an isolated incident--this type of attitude seems to be commonplace at this office. If multiple staff are responding this way, it suggests a larger issue with office stress levels, training, and customer service. Patients and caregivers deserve courtesy, transparency, and respect, not pushback for asking standard, reasonable questions.
