After a rather fruitless and confusing search for a couples therapist for my husband and myself, I found Eve's coaching services on Yelp and was so impressed by her reviews. After speaking on the phone I was even more sold - Eve told me that she is particularly good at working with couples and she is right! In sessions with Eve, we've had the opportunity to start working through patterns which are not serving our relationship, and stop them before they become bigger problems. Eve creates a safe space where both of us can be heard and explore emotions and needs which are difficult to articulate in the heat of an argument. On several occasions she's pointed out connections we never would have noticed on our own, which have helped us move through blockages more quickly. And on a practical note, Eve provides a flexibility with scheduling which we so appreciate. Instead of requiring sessions at a certain cadence, she works with us to schedule sessions when we need them. I do not even know how to begin to recommend Eve Livingston. I saw her for six years as a psychotherapist for individuals. She held my hand through anger, loss, babies, and some substance dependency. It seems like the general consensus is five stars is not enough for Eve, and I would be the last person to disagree. I've been seeing Eve for about five years, since I was thirteen. It's hard for me to fully describe how important Eve has been to my mental health, happiness, and development as a human being during my adolescence. I initially started seeing her to get help through a depressive period of my life. She helped me identify and work through the causes of my depression, but one of the most valuable things she gave me was a completely nonjudgemental space to vocalize my internal pain, and help me to fully articulate it and get it out there. For a thirteen year old, and then as I got further into my teen years and wasn't sure who it was okay to tell what, this is huge. I can talk about anything, and Eve is receptive and interested and listening, which is a blessing for someone who feels unsure about taking up emotional space. Eve helped me overcome a period of depression, which would be enough on its own, but over five years she's given me a healthier, happier way to see the world. Since I was so young when I started seeing her, she's always stressed that unlearning negative patterns of thinking early on will really set the stage for later happiness. Being a bit older now I have to say she was absolutely right. I think about the things I've learned from Eve everyday, and know, without a doubt, that I am a healthier and happier person because of her. This is going to be another float in the Eve-Livingston-Five-Star Parade. When I started seeing Eve, I had been suffering from depression for some time, and at the outset of our sessions, we focused mainly on processing the traumas, both major and minor, that had precipitated the depression until it was successfully resolved. Eve not only helped me to lift myself out of my depression but also provided me with the tools I needed to make it so that subsequent negative moods/bouts of depression were shorter and less taxing. Once I was feeling and functioning better, I had to decide: do I stop here, or do I keep going? I think the main reason I decided to continue, at first, was because Eve is so smart. If nothing else, it is always just a joy and a relief to be able to talk to somebody like her about the world. But there was more. I had been to other therapists in the past, and while each of them helped me to take steps forward in my journey through life, I reached a point with them at which I put up a wall and basically refused to go further. I wasn't aware that I was putting up a wall; I just decided that they couldn't help me, for various reasons, most of them hinging on trust. And they let me get away with it--or weren't fully aware of what I was doing. Eve was different. Not only did she identify my evasive strategy (that is, refusing to believe that anybody could be trusted enough to help me deal with my issues and thereby refusing to deal with them), she helped me to see why trust was so difficult for me--thereby earning my trust. Bottom line: she was smart enough to see through my BS and bluster and get to the core of what was holding me back. As a result, I have moved from wishing I could be a writer/artist to being a writer/artist. Eve has been (and continues to be) crucial to making it happen. I almost feel as if I have accessed a new dimension--moving from the ordinary to the extraordinary, like Dorothy going from black and white Kansas to Technicolor Oz. There was nothing wrong with my life before; it was a solid life of good job/good relationships/meaningful pursuits, etc. It just wasn't quite enough, which I think contributed to my depression. Now I am living my dreams, largely free of the baggage that was holding me back. And while I know I did the work myself, I wouldn't have known what work to do if it weren't for Eve. For that I will always be grateful. And I agree: five stars aren't enough. read more

Eve is wonderful. I found her through two friends who both highly recommend her. I was struggling with a romantic relationship and debating whether to stay or to leave. At the time it was less urgent, but still relevant, I was grappling with depression. Eve is like a calm, practical, stable, good friend. She's supportive but challenges me to be better, to be more mindful, caring, and compassionate to myself and others. I could write so much about Eve. Pages. Chapters. To write a proper recommendation coherently here seems a daunting task - but here goes. I cannot recommend Eve enough. Ours is one of the most important relationships I've ever had. Together, we worked through my very difficult family life, my anger, my self confidence, my messy needs, my anxiety, my compulsions. When I started with her almost 8 years ago, I was constantly upset and anxious. Now I run my own business, and I have almost no anger (except where it's good to have anger!). I am a strong independent woman, who feels love deeply from many of my friends. I handle my clients with calm and compassion. I have turned anxiety into curiosity. I am happy. I am a better person. How did this happen? Eve is the least judgemental person on the planet. In her office I learned what it feels like to be heard and trusted and listened to and liked. And in return I learned what it felt like to trust someone else and to truly know that someone understands me and cares for me. Learning that was the foundation for everything else. I remember the start of our sessions and how I used to cry and cry and cry as we journeyed through my pain. And then a few years later, no more crying. The healing was so tangible. Every few months I would think - Oh! i can do this thing now that I couldn't do before. or Oh! I haven't done that awful self hating thing in so long. Or Oh! I can be there for my friends now. I am not needy, and that allows me to be present. And now all these years later, I have stopped seeing her each week. But when I have a big one, she is there. And it's so amazing to have someone who knows me and she says exactly what I need to hear to move forward. My experience with Eve Livingston wasn't great and I am still frustrated with my time, money and energy spent with her. There were many occasions where she used the wrong name in sessions and seemed to be confusing me with other clients. The entire relationship seemed like one big direct sales marketing tactic for Eve, including sessions she spent reading me her creative writing. The last straw was major billing errors that I needed to confront her on, followed by couples therapy gone very wrong. I am left feeling that several precious years were wasted following her advice and distorted thinking, sadly. When I questioned her about this she did send me a long poem by Mary Oliver regarding cracked pots in the sentiment that things don't need to be perfect to be good - so helpful at 200+ dollars per hour. The entire experience leaves me doubtful of the effectiveness and value of the therapy and mental health "industry." I would look elsewhere and strongly question other reviews on Yelp. read more

Where to start!? I agree that Yelp should have a bonus star or something for those super special people or experiences. I met Eve about 6 or 7 years before I started seeing her professionally. We both worked in the Rockridge neighborhood and had many run ins. I always knew she was a special person and our run ins and conversations were always something I looked forward to and cherished. I thought geez whoever gets to see her is so lucky. I never thought it could be me because we had met in the "real world". I have seen specialist on and off for the last 10 years. Dealing with a handful of childhood traumas, abuse, substance abuse, depression, self confidence, love, suicide attempts and just being a human in this crazy world. I'm going to join the Five Stars Are Not Enough fan club. My daughter started seeing Eve in January after coming home from college in a bad way. She was anxious, depressed, and so withdrawn and paranoid, I was told she was likely in the early stages of schizophrenia. I was terrified and heartsick for her. She had worked with many therapists before, but wanted someone who would be her intellectual equal. After talking to Eve on the phone for the very first time, I felt like she had the right stuff. My daughter and I both clicked with her and she became an incredible support for us both. She regularly "went off the clock" for us, sending me texts and emails with ideas, Google research, and encouragement. It was fantastic to have a listening ear and know that she was committed to my daughter's mental health and personal growth. To say that working with Eve was transformative on the one hand sounds over-the-top, and at the same time barely scratches the surface. About two years ago my long-term partner left me with no warning, and no explanation. I was devastated. And the pain just kept on coming....intensifying over time rather than abating. Eve really took the time to help me explore where the root of this unfathomable pain came from. Clearly some of it was the break-up, but most of it actually came from me: my self-esteem, confidence, hopes for the future....and strangely, some pretty deep rooted anger issues.....blah. Although it was not fun, it helped and I am better for it. Of all things, my boyfriend and I reconciled. This was not an intentional plan on Eve's behalf....she also worked with him on issues which caused him to take the stance that he did...and this gentle nurturing allowed us to both look at one another in new ways and with love and forgiveness. Now I am not saying the Eve is going to help you get your man back, fix your relationship or otherwise perform miracles. What I am saying is that Eve is creative, gentle, incisive and intuitive. She allowed me the space and the option to view myself and my relationships with others in imaginative ways. This helped me to approach life and many of its dilemmas with a capacity I did not have previously. I can recommend Eve to anyone who is struggling without hesitation.
