Popular Indian restaurant in Hertford. Upsides - the foods OK. Downsides - it doesnt have a traditional Indian restaurant feel. Also they have just been convicted and fined £40,000 for fire safety offences which included:- Blocking escape exits, using stairs as storage space, unsafe electrical wiring, not having firefighting equipment, obstructing escape between the first and second floors and missing floorboards, which would enable a fire to quickly spread and make it difficult for people on higher levels to leave. Eating spicy food can be dangerous for some...... read more

I've eaten here several times. Now you can only speak as you find, but even so it's hard to relate to some of the bad experiences some reviews mention as I've only ever had great food and very good and personal service. I would certainly recommend you give it a try. Menu is extensive, atmosphere is very western, not traditional Indian and I really enjoy the sizzling chicken Nawabi. Add a couple of cold Cobras and it doesn't get much better! read more

I understand that this place is run by the same people who run the Shahenshah. Good music - a "fashionable" Indian Restaurant. Book ahead at weekends - it gets busy. read more

Simply the best Indian restaurant in Hertford! The service is quick and the food is delicious. We were in a group of 6 and all of us enjoyed the ambiance and the quality of food. The staff were very friendly and were checking up on us every 10min. The atmosphere is great especially on the weekends. I loved the Chicken Nawabi which is their signature dish and loved the Chicken Hariyali for the main course. Book early as weekend are busy. read more

Puka tukka I have been coming here for years. Was not a fan of Indian food before moving to Hertford, now would go nowhere else for an Indian. Never had bad service, sometimes music can be loud but this will depend on what part of the week it is. Lamb chops are a must! Sunday buffet is a bargain. Have read reviews on other sites and wonder if the other Indian restaurants in Hertford are writing them..... read more

It's rare (actually this is the first time) that I have ever felt so strongly about a dining experience that I have felt compelled to write a review. The food was standard Indian, quite tasty, a little too greasy and overpriced in my opinion (average dish price £10, average side price £6, small bottle of diet coke £3), but the friends accompanying me thought the food was good. The reason I have given the place one star is because of the appalling service we experienced. I eat out fairly frequently and I could actually go so far as to say this was possibly the worst service I have ever received. We booked a table for 5 friends at 8.30pm on a Saturday. Some of the party were on time, and a couple of guests were late, but the staff refused to allow the guests to sit at their table until the full party had arrived. When the full party had arrived 15 minutes later we were informed that we had lost our table, but not to worry they would give us the next available table. We were told repeatedly over the next 40 minutes that this table would be ready in a few minutes. Whilst we were left standing, thirsty and hungry. If we had known the wait would be 40 minutes we would have certainly gone elsewhere. We were finally seated at a table that appeared to be squeezed into a corridor around 9.30pm. This was almost definitely a health and safety risk and was uncomfortable as the chairs from the diners behind us were pushing onto our chairs. It wasn't the most pleasant of experiences. Shortly before 10pm, we received some Popadoms - without plates. The plates didn't arrive until we had pretty much finished the popadoms. Members of our party had to ask for drinks repeatedly before they arrived. We had asked for a jug of water for the table 3 times this had still not arrived. Our main course arrived around 10.30pm (2 hours after our arrival)! We then had to ask repeatedly for the bill and it was another unacceptably long wait before it arrived. Put it this way, our original plan to go to a pub for a drink after dinner was no longer an option. When we remarked about our poor experience to the staff, they were not particularly sympathetic, but responded with things like 'well it's Saturday night, what do you expect'! Maybe it is not alway this bad, maybe this was a particularly busy night, but I certainly would not recommend it to anyone based on this experience. It is also a very loud restaurant, and whilst we wanted somewhere with a bit of atmosphere and had chosen it because our friend had told us it was quite lively, it was difficult to hear each other speak over the table. They were playing loud music and there were a lot of large parties who were also shouting over the music. Definitely not the place to go if you are hoping to catch up with friends and actually hear your conversation. Dine there at your own risk....you may be left standing for ages, being lied to, feeling very hungry, thirsty and wanting to go home but not being able to pay the bill for a service that you feel really doesn't deserve your hard earned money. read more

we went to bollywoods saturday night in a party of 8. my 2 friends had the chicken briyani and we had the chicken korma. you get lots of chicken in the dishes and it tasted spot on. we sat on the round tables to the rear of the resturant facing the back garden. the seating on the small side for a party of 8 thus being squased abit and wasnt comfortable at all. the waiter did say we 2 of us could move to the next table. but we just sat it out with our friends not to be rude to our party friends. other than that no complaints but the foods a little on the pricey side but then again hertfords a bit dear like that any way.id recomend this resturant to any one who likes good indian food. i wish they would play some indian music, because it fell like you just visited frankie and bennys plastic italian resturants. you need to bring back that indian feel to the place. all said great night. ps. parking a big problem in hertford unless you like walking which ladies dont in high heals id sugest you get a taxi instead. read more

We had a party of 8 at Bollywoods last night. We had a great evening. The food was lovely, great choice and nice big portions. The staff were excellent and we didnt have to wait ages for anything. thoroughly enjoyed our whole evening. The eighties/themed music was great and one of the reasons that we travelled quite a way to go there. We would definitely recommend this restaurant. We booked well in advance for the booth that we wanted and i confirmed our booking the day before to make sure and everything was spot on. Many thanks to the staff of Bollywoods for a great evening.
