So I'm a huge fan of Foie gras, it's definitely one of my favorite things to eat. Unfortunately…read moreit's not very abundant where I live (Hawaii) so it's expensive and you get this tiny little portion about the size of a 50 cent piece. When we ate at Le Mére Hamard, my friend ordered the Foie gras with banyuls and carmelized turnips for dinner and when it came out, my eyes bulged out their sockets. There were 3 cutlets of foie gras each the size of a scroll wheel mouse! SERIOUSLY?! This dish would be equal to getting 7 or 8 foie gras portions in Hawaii. The cutlets were in a rich butter and banyul wine sauce that (I think) had demi glace in it. The diced carmelized turnips added just the right texture to the fatty livers. Holy schmolly this was incredibly good. The other dishes ordered were: Pressed rabbit terrine and Foie gras Steamed mussels in curry cream and crispy mushrooms Slow braised veal shanks (special of the day) Desserts: Baba ah rum with vanilla ice cream Pain perdu with fresh raspberries Raspberries in creme anglaise Everything was over-the-top delicious! There were also 2 amuse bouches served prior to the main dish and a small plate of sweet petit fours before the dessert. The great food and the friendly staff (that all spoke english very well) made this the most memorable meal of the trip. i hope to return.

Home made from scratch, we tried many of the dishes and we haven't been disappointed at all. The head chef William Sarazin know what taste and flavor means. What an amazing lunch !!! On the front of the house, things got even better, Matthieu, our host, server and also owner took care of us from A to Z. Very knowledgeable in food and wine pairing. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. Contemporary rustic décor. The environment is laid-back yet elevated. The bar area has a first-come, first-served seating which is great during peak times without a reservation. A seasonal menu in flux with an emphasis on elevated traditional French cooking. It is apparent that fair amount of effort went into finding and retaining top talent. It is always refreshing to experience a meal being served by the owner. The wait staff knows their menu backwards and forwards. Bottom line: If you are looking for a laid-back fine dining experience that is sure to satisfy your taste buds, look no further. Le Mans have found another great terrific place to enjoy a great meal at very reasonable price.

It could have been the way the hosts set everything up but the service wasn't what I expected. For example, they had beautiful arrangements of champagnes and several waiters but they did not come to you or offer a drink. You had to get up and get it yourself. I enjoyed trying the bites, especially the shrimp and eggplant. They did deliver platters to each table. My favorite part was the cheese but you had to get up for that also. It was awkward. Restaurant itself is very beautiful and we had great weather for the patio. I'm sure it's better if you have the full seated dining experience.

Our luggage was whisked away and we were transported to our table overlooking an attractive courtyard which would no doubt have been used for our aperitifs had the weather been kind. First impressions became concrete opinions as the food and wine arrived. The menu is full of classical French dishes which have been tweaked just enough to keep them current without detracting from the joy of their historic origins. The food was complimented by a wine list which focussed on wines from the appellations surrounding Tours and featured classic producers and up-and-comers alike. The bottle of Chinon red recommended by our sommelier was extremely good. There were a number of stella dishes. My favourite was my main of Le coeur de ris de veau, essentially a giant piece of sweetbread perfectly cooked and served with delicious fricassée of mushrooms and a veal, truffle and vin jaune sauce. The sweetbread was not just the biggest I had ever seen, but also the most tasty and in combination with its accompaniments my mouth was buzzing with the different textures and flavours. Close behind was Charles Barrier's signature Grand Marnier soufflé desert which we had to order at the start of the meal. I have never seen a soufflé rise so high - I would love to know how they did it. However, in addition to this technical feat, the soufflé was amazingly light and the Grand Marnier flavour was partnered by a refreshing grapefruit sorbet. A great way to end a great meal - so good in fact, that we were already planning our next visit before we had left!
