What you can expect though is a wide array of fresh produce at affordable prices all year round. For instance when most supermarkets were selling bananas at $14/kg, Cato sold bananas at $10/kg. They're also got a small selection of Asian groceries, nuts, herbs, spices and condiments available. But my all time favourite reason for shopping at Cato is they have really hot fresh chillies: a staple in my diet!

Some Sunday's there are only a small handful of stalls... It seems to be weather dependent. Those who seem to be regular are the great organic vege stall, I think they're called Spring Creek organics, they have a great selection of seasonal produce, the organic chocolate stall and there are usually 2 bakery stalls, both selling yummy artisan breads. There is a fabulous homemade dip stall, but on the first Sunday of the month, you can also buy the most amazing falafel pita pocket. Make sure you save space for this! Today there was also a homemade crumpet stall, free range eggs, a tomato stall and an apple stall that also sold Apple juice. There was a seafood stall, a pistachio stall and also a representative from the Hobson's Bay council giving information about capital spending and asking for residents advice.. This was all happening outside in the substation carpark while inside the substation a craft market was set up, but only on the first Sunday of the month...

La Tortilleria is here every third Sunday selling freshly made tortillas, nachos, and authentic tamales. We like to come to the Substation with the dog, grab some veggies, and a takeaway coffee, and then head over to the Newport/Williamstown foreshore for a picnic and a long walk.

When you shop here, you pack your purchases into cardboard boxes rather than bags. The staff encourage you to bring your boxes back with you the next time you visit to help the environment. Inside it is spacious with crates of fruit and veg everywhere. The staff here know a lot about the stock and are great at answering questions about when certain fruits will be in season and what are suitable vegetables to use as a replacement in recipes. It is great to visit a store with such passionate and friendly workers too.

Come during lunch hour and watch a cooking demonstration. At the end, you walk away with delicious fresh free food. They also have a wonderful variety of cuisine from around the world to buy here. On my first trip, I bought Mauritian food, which cost less than $5 for two items. Other than clothes and food, you can find electronic accessories, jewelry, toys, movies, and various other items. I bought my auntie some lovely natural soaps from here. Just make sure you have enough cash before hitting the shopping stalls. Some places will accept cards, but not all. There are a few ATM's in the market if you need to withdraw cash.

I used to put them in my school bag and throw them in the bin at school if I remember correctly. But aside from the cheese and bacon rolls, they make the most amazing cinnamon doughnuts I have ever tasted. No joke - Knoxfield Bakery. At only 90 cents per doughnut, they are the perfect consistency. Not too hard and not too light. I think I could eat their cinnamon doughnuts all day long and that isn't me exaggerating. The other prices are pretty good and they make really fun cupcakes with smiley faces on them - they taste really good too. Prices are cheap and for the most part I like their products. (Lets not mention those cheese and bacon rolls.) The service is quick and the staff are friendly too. It's a nice bakery and I really think that everyone should get the chance to try their cinnamon doughnuts - come on, they really are amazing!
