I've only ever posted letters from here as well as ask for directions (which the friendly staff were very helpful with) but everything else appears to be in order. Grange Road can get a bit busy sometimes for a post office that could maybe be a touch bigger. But given the unfortunate ever decreasing role post offices play in communities, you will never have to queue for long.

Edinburgh was no exception and we trekked over to this post office about a 7 minute walk away from our Doubletree Hotel just to get it stamped. That turned out to be very close and convenient. The post card is always easy, the postage not always so in some locations. This post office may or may not be typical, but it was busy with customers, and crowded in a tight space with a lot of stationary and utility supplies, and there were two clerks, one at each of the two counters. Our clerk was an affable guy. The post card postage back to the US was 3.2 GBP - yikes!, but whatever. They got the job done for us and that's an a-ok rating from me. Thank you!

I often find myself here to post paperwork during working hours. I've always found the staff to be…read morepleasant and when it's that bit busier, there's no extended wait time as staff work speedily through the queue. The post office is located within a Nisa shop, which is perfect for a quick milk run but not really much more, considering just how close the Asda store is, and it's considerably cheaper there and they've a much better selection. There's also a mini bakery too, which is all made by the Stephen's bakery, I'm sure. That's a nice little touch. - Post then pudding for the sweet-toothed among us! I've not been particularly blown away by the post office, but I'm here regularly and it does all I need to, hence the solid three stars.

Really it deserves a whole-hearted four stars for friendly and fast service, as the same cheery chap is usually in each time I vist (and he didn't judge me too harshly when I attempted to shuttle some whisky out across the border--who knew it wasn't allowed to be sent outside the U.K. ehh??). Unfortunately though, the cheeriness of the staff isn't quite matched by a rather lackluster interior, giving it two stars for its questionably dismal and post-apocalyptic vibes. IMO it just needs some new lighting and a thorough dusting, and it'd be right as rain--much like the shiny new post on Dalry! Ah well--you'll still find me here shelling out an arm and a leg to send ginormous parcels back home to the States anyway!

The house of Sir James Stewart used to be at the lower end the stairs near Cockburn St. It's literally steps away from the Supreme Courts building in Parliament Square. Well, about 70 steps up. Today, it's more of a shortcut between Market Street and the Royal Mile. The best feature of Advocate's Close is actually the perfectly framed view of the Scott Monument through the archway. You'll also see how high you are on the hill when walking up or down this steep & worn set of stairs. Hopefully they will add handrails to it one day like others that we've seen throughout the city. I mean, they don't call them "Death Stairs" for nothing. Oh, and theres's a very popular gastropub called the Devil's Advocate near the bottom of the steps. We didn't get to visit it, but it came highly recommended. It's just another reason to visit it.

Edinburgh is riddled with closes and Advocate's Close is a fine example of these narrow lanes that…read moreconnect streets throughout and behind the Royal Mile. The tall buildings that line the path give many closes a canyon-like feel with many of them sloping steeply down from the Royal Mile. It's like walking into the underground! Advocate's Close is particularly popular with tourists and I can see why. At the top, it offers a beautiful peek-a-boo view of the Sir Walter Scott Monument in the distance and some of Edinburgh's central buildings. Walk all the way down and it connects you to Cockburn Street below. Definitely try walking through a close or two as they are great shortcuts to get from one street to another along the Royal Mile.
