There's a section for vintage and classic books and an adorable couch to sit on if you want to get cozy and read a bit. The window displays are always cute, there's a "beach" read theme for the summer! Inside there's a mystery display. Current popular authors are found as well as some obscure ones. This is one of my favorite places in the area. Whenever my partner and I go book shopping, we come here first (and we also sell them all the books we read for store credit). The staff is so friendly, and the selection of books is LARGE. There is something for everyone here, whether you're looking for a classic, a mystery, manga, a cookbook, or even a puzzle. They also do little events throughout the year, and put a lot of love and thought into them. If you follow their social media you can see when the events are and I encourage you to attend! They always have a fun game or free gift or little treats. It is such a homey feel, and is so great if you like the classic bookstore feel. The pricing structure is also simple and straightforward; you pay half the cover price for any book you get (which means many of the older books/airport readers are a super great deal). I am here at least once a week, I LOVE Midlo Book Exchange. The ladies here are always super helpful and kind, and very fair. I have traded books with them for a few months now, and they have taken almost every book I bring them (aside from any damaged ones- their products are all in great condition). It's so peaceful in here, they have tons of genres, and their pricing is simple and a bargain (you pay half off the cover price). HIGHLY recommend to book lovers everywhere! read more

I'm in my late 20s now, but I grew up coming here as a kid all the time to get books for my summer reading. I'm visiting from South Florida this week and decided to take my eight-year-old niece here for fun. It is still such a truly amazing place. There were two delightful women working, and they were very kind and helpful towards me and my niece, even helping us pick out a great book for her. If you're in the area on a rainy day and looking for something to do, or if you're just looking for some great books with fantastic prices, I would definitely recommend coming here. read more

The Midlothian Book Exchange is THE place for RVA readers! I have been going to this local gem for years and always look forward to my next visit. Their trade in policy is amazing if you are constantly shopping for new books (like me). If I recall correctly, they offer 1/4 list price of books they accept as store credit! One thing I love is their massive YA selection. They have a great variety of teen books available. They also have a wonderful reading area full of antique /classic books. It's like a library straight out of a movie. If you enjoy reading and live in the Richmond/Midlothian area, I highly recommend this shop! I love this place and the people who work there. They wont always have the book I want, what used bookstore does, but they often do, or something similar. I have traded in more books than I can count [though they won't take everything] and gotten just as many in return. I don't know why anyone would say this place is 'overpriced'. Almost every used bookstore I have ever visited has the same policy: half-price used books, and sometimes the hardbacks and comics cost less than that, especially if their condition isn't ideal. Maybe I'm biased- I really do love the people there... and they love me back. The last time I was in they flat out -gave- me a series of five books. read more

I was shocked by the blatant rudeness I had to witness while in the Book Exchange today. I went in with a rather heavy box of books and the older lady behind the counter made a joke about how man books I brought in. As I was browsing a younger lady (possibly an owner?) came in from getting lunch. She let out a frustrated sigh at the mountain of books needing to be looked at (three others came in after me to drop off books). She seemed very annoyed at the presence of all the books... her coworker said they weren't all from me to which the younger of the two replied "quite frankly if a box is too heavy for me to lift I lose interest" WOW. Just wow. I don't expect a red carpet to be rolled out for my used books but stifling the bad attitude till the customer leaves the store might be a better business practice. Also hard cover books from the art section can only be paid for with half credit and half cash. Kind of a bummer. read more

I used to love wandering through this store when the sweet old woman owned the place. She had a way to making everyone feel welcome and she and I always exchanged some chit chat about books we love. Sorry to say that when she passed away, so did the warm feeling. I have been going to this store for 8 years and there is not ever a passing nod of recognition when I drop off books there. Customer service and remembering people who have patronized your establishment for a long time, seem to be a cornerstone of a small business. I've noticed that their inventory isn't as vast as it used to be and they're getting a lot pickier about the books they're willing to buy. I can put up with a lot of things when the atmosphere is friendly, but frankly, I always feel like I'm inconveniencing the owner when I show up there. read more

This is one of the only completely used bookstores in Richmond, and while it's not spectacular, it's refreshing to see it still alive and kicking, in an age of half.com. It's a pretty big place with lots of fiction and romance novels of all types... the selections of literature and art and travel, etc. are way way smaller... It also has a room of children's books. The main thing I wish they had available was a computer to search their inventory. I find bookstores to be a little overwhelming nowadays unless I have a list of books I want to buy, or can remember specific authors names. So for me, the best part about this store is the fact that they have displays with popular titles scattered around... I found most of the books I bought there, like one of Barak Obama's books... For 3 books that are relatively new and in better than average condition, I paid $20. It's not super cheap, but then again the books I bought were worth that much really, even on half.com probably. I wouldn't want to pay half the cover price for some romance novels though... so I can see where some folks might find this place to be a bit overpriced. I also haven't tried to sell any books there yet. I am considering it though- if I can trade in enough to get a new book or two, that would be awesome. read more

Key word: Exchange. Do not take books here expecting to get cash. You will be issued credit toward purchases. Regardless of your accumulated credit, you'll pay cash for half of your purchase should you decide to buy anything. If they should actually take books from you, hang on to your credit slip. In spite of technology available to do so, they keep no records. If you lose your handwritten credit slip, too bad. I have yet been able to determine the criteria of what it is they may want. It seems to depend on the mood of whomever is working the counter that day. I used to browse here frequently, and on a few occasions made some good finds, but not so much anymore. Still, it's a good place for book lovers to browse. read more

While the prices here can seem a little steep for those of us used to the $1 books at Goodwill, the selection here is amazing. The staff here generally knows where everything is and are incredibly friendly. If you're in Midlothian and love books, then make sure to stop by here. This bookstore is kinda hard to find at first...it's near Kabutos on Southside (or across the street from the American Family Fitness, for you gym rats). This used bookstore is not my favorite in comparison to others. I am sad to say the customer service lacks, unless you are a regular to the older crew. However, what I do love about this place is the HUGE selection. They have every type of book you could look for...from textbooks and maps to fiction and children's books. They even have some other varied topics of interest - from home improvement to gardening. Things are a bit overwhleming at first to find things, but they have easy to read signage that will help you find what you are looking for. The walkways down the aisles are a bit tight but this place is never crowded, so you shouldn't have a problem getting through. They do book exchanges, but from what my friend and I experienced, they are somewhat selective on their choices. read more

I've been going to Book Exchange for 20 years and it's practically the only book store I use any more. I'm a teacher for both middle and high school aged kids and they always have a great selection of both the trendy books my students want to read and the literature I teach for their classes.
