Bookers opened in 2015 in the revitalized town of Kirklin. The locally owned and operated restaurant was named for a local farmer who loved Bookers whiskey. The dining rooms are filled with an eclectic blend of farmhouse decor. There is a homey Midwest feel with soft country rock playing in the background. The bar is downright cozy and adorable. The menu offers a mix of burgers and sandwiches. There is also a dinner menu. Our server told us that the burgers and tenderloins are fresh and hand prepared. The tenderloins are a favorite. I had the Bbq burger with fries. The burger was thick and topped with bacon, onion rings and bbq sauce on a Brioche bun. The burger was delicious. In addition, the battered fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned. They were crispy and not too much salt. The tenderloin was good. The breaded coating was well seasoned and accompaniments were fresh. The staff is welcoming, friendly and attentive. An event room is available for weddings or parties. There is a kids menu. If you want a dirty noisy place to eat where the air is full of grease and you can't hear yourself yelling over the blaring music then this is NOT the restaurant for you! This place is neat as a pin and you can have a conversation with the table next to you without having to raise your voice! The food is amazing, and the staff friendly and attentive. I have had their breaded pork tenderloin sandwich multiple times now and it has not failed me yet! Perfectly battered and cooked to crispy, juicy, tender perfection. I get it 'dragged through the garden' with lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion. All the toppings are fresh and tasty. After shopping at a couple of shops in Kirlin, we came upon Bookers restaurant. I had checked out the menu before we arrived, and the menu sounded good. We entered the restaurant and waited at the counter for a couple of minutes before we were seated in a booth. The restaurant's atmosphere is warm and cozy with gorgeous woods, old window frames on the wall, and many stained glass pieces throughout. The restaurant has 3 dining rooms with a mixture of booths and tables along with a gorgeous bar area with tall-top tables. Our server arrived promptly, taking our drink orders and returning a few minutes later for our food order. My husband ordered the daily special, which was an amazing breaded tenderloin served with delicious fries. They use a well-seasoned, light batter on the Tenderloin, and we both were surprised at how incredibly tender it was. He raved about the tenderloin several times and told friends how incredible it was. The fries have a light batter and a slightly crispy seasoned coating. Delicious! I ordered the Mushroom and Swiss Burger. I'm usually not a big burger fan, but it sounded good. The burger was medium rare, seasoned with Cajun seasoning as requested, topped with swiss cheese, mushrooms, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, and dill pickle. The burger was served with one side, and I opted for the wonderful seasoned fries. Both were delicious, and I had very little to carry out for my dogs. We are going back just to have lunch or dinner at Bookers. I also want to purchase a couple of items I fell in love with. SO GOOD! The friendliest staff, I have loved every meal I've had at Bookers! My favorite is the buffalo chicken wrap and fries! Their fries are hot and crispy every single time! You get a great portion of food without breaking the bank! It's a great date night spot, place to go and if you want a drink, or you can go with the family! Wonderful restaurant! It has a small-town feel with style added. The decor is well-done with brick walls and a bar made from an old courthouse. The food? Great menu selection and great prices. Everything I've tried has been terrific. The burgers are consistently cooked just right, and they will customize almost anything. The service? If they are busy (they are swamped on Fridays because of the fish dinner), you will be waiting longer, do just don't be in a rush then. When they aren't busy, service is just fine. I rarely write a bad review....cant think of the last one....but here we go. Friends of ours made reservations for 6 people at 6:00 on Friday evening. We arrived 15 minutes early thinking we might grab a drink from the bar while we wait for our table. Upon entering we waited to be greeted by the hostess who asked us what name our reservation was under. She then said there wasn't a reservation in that name, which she checked on a sheet of paper at the desk. She then proceeded to tell us she would check the "Book" and see if it was in that to no avail. She offered to seat us as soon as a table was available. OK. We then started to the bar to grab a drink while we waited and she told us we couldn't go to the bar as it was all "reserved". We stated we just wanted to BUY a cocktail while we waited, she said we could get it but would have to come back to the waiting area. OK. As we walked into the bar area we were quickly stopped by a man who also said we couldn't go to the bar as the seats were by reservation. Seeing a theme here. We then had to explain again that our goal was to grab a drink while we wait on our eventual table. He said OK. Finally got to the bar and the bartender who was addressing a table outside of the actual bar rail, harshly turned to us and said, "You can't sit at the bar, these are reserved seats." Holy moly! All we wanted to do was spend money while we wait to spend more. We were all so confused by the experience to this point that we decided to bail on the pre-dinner drink. We were eventually seated in a back room corner table that felt like we were in Time-Out! Our server was very nice and polite. We asked her what the red wine list was like and she told us it was Cabernet and Merlot. OK. So are they both the same winemaker? Yes, Barefoot. In the small twist-off single serve bottles. OK. We aren't in a high end steak house. We get it. We then placed an appetizer order for the table. Mushrooms and cheese curds. Brought out in a timely fashion. They were both very good. The 6 of us ordered our entrees, that then took an hour and 15 minutes to get. The room we were in wasn't packed, the other room was pretty full but an hour and 15 is crazy. Only 2 steaks at our table, cheese steak sandwich, shrimp dinner and a burger. All 6 of us enjoyed our meals. However, all of us were a little irate at how we had been treated. It is nice for a small town to have a restaurant that isn't a chain but they do need some work on their treatment of customers, at least in this regard. We didn't feel the "Hoosier Hospitality" that we expected. We felt like interlopers in their "its all reserved " world. read more

Got taken here by friends who raved about their tenderloin sandwich. Honey vibes with plenty of room and seating. We ordered and shared stuffed jalapeños. 7 came in an order along with sides of ranch. They were stuffed with cream cheese (the best kind of stuffing), were fresh and pretty good. We all ordered breaded tenderloins with fries and onion rings. The sandwiches were very fresh and came with all the fixings. Sandwiches were good but I'd recommend getting toppings on the sandwich as they were a little bland without. Fries were very good, seemed double fried which were nice and crispy! Onions rings were good as well. It's a little out of the way but a nice lunch trip if you're looking for a solid tenderloin sandwich! read more

Booker's is a great restaurant in a tiny town that sits squarely in the middle of nowhere if you happen to be traveling North on US 421. The staff is great. The are attentive, friendly, great at their job, and extend a special type of Hoosier hospitality that you only see in small town Americana. The food is great too! Try the burgers! You can't choose a bad one. The Mushroom n Swiss is really good. The Philly cheese steak is good too but you'd be remiss to pass up the all you care to eat fish on Friday nights. It's a small town firehouse fish fry right at your table. The fries are solid too. The short rib and mashed potatoes are damn good. The beers on tap are good and go beyond the standard domestics though those are represented too. While the spirits are basic you can still get a scotch that goes beyond JW Black. Luckily I can visit Booker's whenever I go visit my mom, but it's worth the 35 minute drive North of Indy for folks who haven't ventured out to see small town Indiana. It won't disappoint. read more

If you want one of the best Breaded Tenderloins indiana, make the drive to Kirkland. At least that's what my partner told me. I had an amazing "best burger in five counties" it stood true to it name. We dined here tonite with some friends celebrating a birthday. We were a party of six. The nights special was Fried Chicken or Rib-eye steak. 5 of us had the steak and the other was a Tilapia dinner. We started out with appetizers which was stuffed jalapeños popper, fried mushrooms and fried pickles which were delicious. Our entrees was fantastic. And dessert was a birthday cake that we bought with us. Service was fantastic our waitress came and checked up on us and made sure we had beverages as dinner was being eaten. Bookers is a family restaurant, cozy atmosphere. Will definitely go back. When it came time for dessert, we asked if they would refrigerate our cake and they were happy to do so. Friends won't go there either, inconsistency, oily if fried, grilled dry salmon pressed as a burger, the cooks must not care, the taste is omg I should've stay home...a waste of money. If you are traveling through the TINY town of Kirklin, you will find a family style cafe called Bookers. It was our first visit and we ordered a burger and tenderloin sandwich for lunch. Both were excellent! The tenderloin was thicker than usual and my husband said it was the best he had ever eaten...wow! We want to come back and try the Friday night fish fry. The reviews were so phenomenal I was surprised to be so underwhelmed! Started with potato skins, which were below average (microwaved, possibly?) served with packaged sour cream. Well it was our first time and I was not sure from the reviews I saw, but I am so glad we went. The waitress Sarah was so nice and was on top of keeping drinks filled. We got mushrooms to start and they were so good, light batter and very good mushrooms of different kinds, not the plain white ones. I got a chicken breast sandwich it was moist the bun soft and fresh and the bacon cooked perfect. My husband got the philly steak and said it was one of the better ones he had. I got coleslaw instead of fries and it was homemade and fresh and good The only compliant I had is that they allowed kids to run around and play on the floor. read more

Having visited Bookers several times over the years, we are always pleasantly surprised at how good our food and service is. We have never had an issue! There were eight of us visiting on this particular night, and we had the most delightful server! Quaint little restaurant with outstanding food. We had the rack of ribs and pork tenderloin for dinner. Both were by far the best we have had in the area. Dessert changes depending on the day as they are freshly made. We had blueberry lemon cake and apple crisp. Very disappointed with the way we were treated. Our first visit and last. The atmosphere was nicely done and really cool! The food being delivered to the other tables looked and smelled so good. Our service was terrible. We waited at least 10 minutes to even put in a drink order. Waited 30 minutes before the server came to take our order. That was the only time she was at our table. After an hour of waiting for our order, we noticed people who arrived after us had already ate and were leaving. My sister flagged her down and asked about the food and she ignored us and kept walking. Second time she responded it would be out in a minute. More people began getting their food and my other sister actually got up and asked her. She was very rude and brushed her off again. Even laughed and rolled her eyes. At our table, we were expressing our frustration and the next thing we know, the manager came out and told us we needed to leave. No questions, no trying to see what the issue was. After us telling her was was happening, she offered to make is our food. So our order was never put in. We told her we were leaving and that was not the way to handle business. Busy or not, as a server you don't ignore your guests and as a manager, you don't tell people to leave and not care to solve the problem. Very disappointed and will not go back unfortunately. It looked like a cool, fun place and we were so excited to try the food. I've been a server for 10 years and the way we were treated as first time customers is disgusting. read more

My husband and I had dinner at Booker's for the first time yesterday. Booker's is quite a jewel in the tiny town of Kirklin. I'm racking my brain to find at least one negative thing to say but I have nothing! The service was great with the server making sure we had everything we could want without hovering over us annoyingly as some servers do. I had a Reuben sandwich and my husband had a tenderloin. Both were excellent and an average price. The restaurant is very clean and has a very nice bar off the family dining area. There was some pretty awesome blues playing softly in the background. The owners have done a great job all around and I wish them the best. Kirklin has some great antique stores so if you are in the area for that reason or just passing through, be sure to stop into Booker's. read more
