In the end I got my tax refunds so I'll give them 3 stars which is fair and right in the middle. I've always done my own taxes but 2013 was a bit more complicated than usual with having a rental property for half the year and then selling off the same rental property. This was too much for H & R Block's tax software to handle so I wanted a real CPA to help me out. After some yelp searching I noticed majority of the tax places around are not CPA's or if they are they're old enough to have seen the creation of the IRS. Boroff & Co is staffed with young CPA's all educated at Cal State Long Beach. It was only about 5 minutes away so I figured it was a good choice. I called the number and spoke to Megan who was very friendly. She said Tiffany Boroff would give me a call after she was done with a client to talk over my situation and give me an estimate. Tiffany called me back within 15 minutes and after I explained my tax info she gave me a quote and we set an appointment. I thought the quote was very competitive compared to friends I know that have their taxes done with CPA's and also my past experience hiring one for my dad's estate taxes. Instead of the dark dank musty accounting offices I've been to in the past this one was very modern and airy. Staff were all playing a competitive game of ping pong when I walked in the door. I stood there awkwardly until somebody noticed me and came over so I could fill out some client info. Tiffany called me in for my appointment and we got started. She was great to work with. Great sense of humor, easy to work with, and easy to understand when she explained tax info. We went over all my documents one by one and quickly my taxes were all done and ready to e-file. Since my wife wasn't with me I was given two documents for us to sign and fax back. So far 5 stars all the way! My wife gets home and we sign the documents the same day and fax them over. I call and speak to Megan on the phone who confirms she received the documents and I even get an e-mail from her also confirming the documents were received. Here's where the train of customer service derails quickly. Over a week passes and I'm eagerly waiting for my refunds to be direct deposited. Instead I get an e-mail from an anonymous "Missing Documents Team" telling me they are still waiting on my two documents and that they can't efile without them. Confused I pick up the phone and call. Megan picks up, the same person who confirmed she got the documents. She reconfirms she got the documents and has no clue who this mysterious "missing documents team" is. I ask to talk to Tiffany but I'm informed she's with a client and will call me back which she never does. Another week passes and still no refund. I check online and federal says processing but California says never received. I call Megan again and she checks my files and lets me know my taxes were never efiled. I let her know federal shows they are filed but she insists they are not. Since I'm now really pissed I demand to speak to Tiffany. She confirms that both my taxes were efiled the day I came in and explains the miscommunications are due to team of staff they hire for the busy tax season. A few days later I did get my tax refunds. FYI, California refund status website doesn't work. I have my refund yet it still claims it's not found. I understand the need for extra help but you should really have them trained properly if they're going to interface with clients. My tax situation was pretty simple yet I kept getting conflicting information each time I spoke to somebody. Why would the front desk show my taxes as not filed yet the CPA shows them as filed? Why would I get an e-mail saying my documents were never received and yet when I call they know nothing about the e-mail or why I'd get it? **update** Tiffany contacted me about my experience and seemed genuinely concerned. I explained everything and said she'll talk with her people to make sure communication is better in the future. I'm glad she took the time to contact me to see how things could have gone better and because of this I'd definitely consider using them again.

I was able to call Nathan directly and he was able to quickly able to answer my questions. They are up-to-date with technology allowing me to conveniently upload all of my documents into their secure portal so when I go to my appointment, I don't need to bring a stack of paperwork. I've been to other Accountants previously and the attention, service and guidance that I've been provided by Boroff & Co doesn't compare! I don't know why other people seem to be enjoying Tehrani and Velez, but I can only relate my…read moreexperiences: 1) I was never given a handoff from Gabe to the accountant working on my taxes, so I had no idea who to contact. 2) The new tax guy didn't tell me he filed an extension on my taxes. 3) The new guy was quite late in finishing my taxes. 4) Gabe himself was out of town the moment tax season ended, and was impossible to contact. 5) I was given poor communication throughout, and literally had to ask for someone to say the words "we're sorry" to me (they had no intention of apologizing on their own for poor service, communication, and organization). 6) Then I received daily auto messages to please review their services (okay! Here I am! Everyone happy?) 7) Then I told them I had a new accountant, and they sent me an offboarding checklist that literally includes the line: "Future Support: Take Note of Whom to Contact If Assistance is Needed: [CRS Accountant Name] [Insert Email Address Here]." In other words, I have no idea to to contact or how to reach them. ...This is completely in line with the communication I received throughout my time there, and a perfect capstone to my experience. I think they are probably competent at being accountants, but they fall short as genuine, communicative, actual human beings. Unfortunately. I am much happier with my new accountant.
