I thought this was a really good bookstore! It had a good selection. I actually ordered my books online the night before for instore pickup. They had them ready and waiting for me the following afternoon. Store is clean and well organized. And the employee at the front desk was very friendly - seemed very nice when checking out the couple in front of me and when some people walked into the store after me. I'll definitely go back. And the online ordering/pickup system was so easy. Plus there are multiple small stores to stop in that shopping center - TJ maxx, hallmark, better health, an ACE hardware - so then I can pop in multiple spots! read more

Books. Books. Books. I'm slowly getting my momentum back when it comes to reading, and it was time I put a dent into my wishlist. I came here the other day specifically for Pete Souza's new book, which is hysterical and amusing after only three pages. I would've saved around 10 bucks had I ordered online, but I couldn't wait 3-5 days. The employees don't seem too high strung, and seem very eager to help you out, which is great because it can be annoying when it's obviously that you need help, yet staff just walks by you. When I initially entered the store the first thing to catch my eye was a mug. I end up picking it up, only to add to the 40+ mugs I already have and don't really need. In addition to mugs they're tons of gadgets, cards, keychains, ect... This store almost feels like a an outlet Barnes and Nobles meets Borders. Plan on return to do some Christmas shopping for friends/family who also loves books. read more

I really miss Border's Books so much. Some of their locations became BAM. When I get I chance I like to road trip to Sandusky, OH to BAM because they still have their coffee shop, Joe Mugs, and I really enjoy a bookstore with a cafe. I have not been to particular location book store for decades, but the moment I stepped through the door all of my Border's Books memories came flooding back with all the good feels and all the good vibes. I really missed coming to a place like this. Like Border's they have some great deals, fun products, and a nice selection. The kids love manga, and they had a nice section. A very helpful and enthusiastic worker helped them find some books and had a lengthy and fun conversation. I simply enjoyed walking around hunting some good finds. Since I am big into holiday shopping, I was excited to find fun books and trinkets. Plus, anyone who has listened to the news lately and has gone to other big box shops, there is a bit of a toy shortage and they seemed to have plenty of good ones here. But I was informed that they do not have their full stock of books and items due to the current shortages. For me the only reason this establishment does not get five stars is due to a lack of coffee shop. I miss the full experiences, but if I remember correctly, this location never had a cafe. Since I am very big into coffee, I would have frequented this store more if there was a spot for some caffeine and snacks. But now that I have seen what they do have to offer, I am sure we will stop by again soon. read more

It's a great place to go and get lost for a bit and explore the wonderful world of a brick and mortar book store. Prices can be a bit higher, especially when compared to places like Amazon, but support a real shop is always nice. read more

Tidy and organized, this store has a very nice selection of books and magazines, hardcovers and softcovers, mostly recently published but a few others, too. There is also a very large section of games and gaming accessories and other toys. The store seems to feel that it's got more merchandise than it has space. The aisles are a little tight and it feels a little cramped. Not in a huge way but certainly noticeable. Some seats are around for reading, but not too many. read more

The decline of chain bookstores marks a turning point for me. I've finally grown up. I remember spending hours in bookstores, salivating over the latest releases of my favourite authors and digging through shelf after shelf of new and old books in search of rare discoveries worthy of my own personal trove. I don't have a particular bias for independent bookstores versus chains, especially when the staff at a chain store goes out of their way to make recommendations, highlight lesser known gems, and create an inclusive environment. BAM! is one of our few survivors of the great bookstore decline in the 2010s, and like its peers, survival calls upon diversification. You'll find more than simply books here. The displays for Lego, Peppa Pig, and other children's toys in the front side spells that out right away. Sure, you can find greeting cards, cute tchotchkes for journals and bookmarks, and the throwaway tokens of the latest trends -- be it Deadpool, DCU, Tokidoki, or some adorable anime import or a sloth to replace the unicorn trend. But at heart, BAM is still a bookstore. Look past the socks that pull in the tweens to twenty-somethings, and the shades of a bookstore still prevail. Sure, there are simply more modes of written material to delve through. The back walls of magazines promise to take you to faraway places, teach you about hobbies you love or barely knew existed, and keep up with the news. Print magazines are special, with textures that gleam under your fingers and details coming to life in a way an eReader just can't do. I'm not knocking digital books, given I have an enormous library. But paper is sometimes required. The graphic novels, comics and manga section shouldn't surprise anyone given the popularity of the genre. BAM has a deep selection available from mostly mainstream publishers, but remember they can order indie work too. Omnibus and bound editions are especially welcome, since I can't really afford my shelf space taken up from 32 page issues. But books. Let's spend a moment looking at how deep the kid's selection is, and how little of it is actually made of toys, science kits and gewgaws. They have a great big table for little and big kids to sit down, thumb through books, play with Lego, hug a stuffed giraffe. BAM remembers what childhood in a bookstore is, an exploration of hands and fingers through unfamiliar places. The young readers section gives some especially great stalwarts of fiction and fresh, new voices for first-time readers. By the time you reach YA, it's not all Harry Potter and Captain Underpants. Local authors get their due. And there are of course lots and lots of authors for adults from the bestsellers to the lesser known. Obviously floor space is a reality. The stacks aren't so tall you never see the top part, they aren't so cluttered you can hardly pull out a book. The balance works for a well-lit space you can spend a lot of time roaming around without being atop someone else. So, where could they gain a star? A bit more seating would be nice. Really focusing on Michigan authors or emerging writers is really the other. I'd love to see their space include more handwritten notes on novels the staff or regulars love, that way to connect with things I haven't seen very much. Give me personalized touches. Bookstores in general hurt when they failed to capture the writing market and the self-publishing set. Lots of people could use a weekly workshop that nurtures their talent. C'mon, BAM, you can do this! read more

As someone who primarily shops at Barnes and Noble, and used to shop at this location religiously when it was Borders (r.i.p), I'm pretty familiar with big name bookstores. I do find books a million to be better laid out than most stores and therefore quite easy to shop. They never seem like they have a large selection but I always find exactly what I was looking for, and of course more than I should find to which my wallet bemoans. The staff are very friendly and although they do try to get you to purchase a membership or partake in any other promotion they have going on (today it was $6 bags of coffee to veterans and deployed soldiers), they will take no for an answer. Also, they have one of the biggest collection of notebooks, planners, journals, etc. I've seen. If you're into that sort of thing... Nice and convenient location so I'll be back. read more

This was my first time even noticing this building. I was riding past going to another business and decided to pop in. I was looking for something in particular and was hoping someone was there to help but it wasn't. The store can be a bit overwhelming though it is organized well if you're unfamiliar it can be a lot. I wondered around until I got lucky and found what i was looking for. They had all the books I needed minus one. No biggie though. The cashier was great, he was very friendly and offered extra help for me that i was so grateful for! I will never make another purchase at Books A Million every again. Because of their magazine subscription scam, I had to cancel my visa card. I cannot believe that a well-established company such as this is getting away with stealing credit card numbers. During checkout a few months ago the young cashier asked me if I would be interested in signing up for a magazine subscription, he assured me that I would not be charged. I asked him three times if it costs anything and he kept saying no. The poor kid probably has no idea that he is promoting a scam. I was told that could pick three different magazines and get three months for free, that was it. Three months later I had a weird charge on my bank statement. It was just a bunch of letters with a phone number. I Googled the phone number and found out that the charge was from the magazine subscription from Books A Million. Meaning that BAM gave away my card info to a third party without my permission. This is happening all over the country, just Google it. Thankfully, I was only charged $17.50 but there are people out there who have been charged upwards of $80. If I didn't catch the charge, I probably would have been charged every month until I figured it out. I did not call the number on the statement because most people said it was a dead end so instead I called my bank and canceled the card and put a stop-hold on any further transactions from the sketchy company. I insisted on buying all my books from BAM because I wanted to support a local, brick and mortar store instead of ordering off Amazon where the prices are cheaper. I am glad to have a book store back in this location. But I miss Borders -- I really do. I enjoyed walking around and browsing. The magazine section was big & really good. Quite a good children's section. Lots and lots of extra stuff sold here, too -- t-shirts, socks, toys, games. Most things were selling for the list price and let's be honest - I can order it from amazon for a better price. I will be back - I love to browse. My little guy loved running around and looking at toys and books. But ... I'm going to need some coupons or something to entice me to make a purchase here. read more

It's not just their magazine subscription that you need to watch out for. When they ask if you want $5 or $10 off your purchase, be careful. They're actually signing you up to an annual subscription for coupons without telling you, hoping you'll forget about it and let it auto-renew. The $5 off one was a $25 subscription and I dont know what the $10 one was. I get a feeling it's not okay to be doing that, to be peddling things without telling customers what the charge is. I'm very grateful I caught it on the terminal before I put my card in. Terrible business practice. I hope this is the next one millenials wise up on and stop giving money to. read more

Did not like the upsell I witnessed the woman in front of me getting it while I was in line to buy some books. First the membership thing, then "would you like to buy a toy for a charity?" with an array of toys and such behind the register, no prices on them so she had to ask. I love this bookstore so much. The employees are obviously treated well as they always seem genuinely happy. We've gotten great book recommendations here. My 11-year-old has no idea what to read after spending a year on the Harry Potter series, and the young man with the deathly hallows tattoo was the perfect person to ask for spot-on recommendations. Books are becoming more rare by the year to see in person. Admittedly my old reading habit has slowed - instead being replaced by social media reading, a hollowed out log at best comparison. Some of my favorite authors I carry with me, layered electronically in my kindle fire. But from time to time I still like to hold a book and crack a hard bound backing or two. This longing brought me to the doors of Books A Million. It's big, bright and organized into category and subcategory. Fiction is right up front for the daydream chasers (me). The store takes a broad brush approach to books; at closer scrutiny some of the authors I wanted to find weren't there (Tara Finch). Things I missed about bookstores was there - book accessories! Bookmarks, book lights, etc. we're near the checkout register. These are the things I forget to search for on Amazon.com while purchasing books. All in all a nice space to read some chosen excerpts and hold a book. read more

These days we usually buy our books online. Go by title and or author. We all remember, however, those comfy days when we would go to a bookstore and randomly browse the isles and find a book we thought might be interesting. I miss barnes and noble or borders everywhere. In this bookstore I have found that same feeling again. A large quiet place where you can browse and enjoy at your leisure, then purchase what you want without issue. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. It is nice to see a book store in the old Borders space at 13 Mile and Southfield Rd. The store does not have the extensive selection that Borders used to have...among its strongest sections are gifts, toys, religious/inspiration books, although there are plenty of magazines, popular fiction and sale books to keep most casual readers happy. It lacks the extensive biography, art, history, entertainment and sections like I always enjoy in my favorite book stores. It's OK to visit, but not a place where I could spend hours browsing. I'd like to see a few more seating areas in the store (considering taking my mom here, but I'm a little afraid she won't last long here as there is no where for her to sit down and rest or read a bit)...and I'd really like to see a coffee shop here. read more

Long ago and far away, this used to be a Borders. It was the place I stopped at every day on my way to work. When Borders went out of business, this store stood empty until BAM moved in. Yes, that's it's name-Books-A-Million, or BAM. This store looks nothing like it used to-it's brighter and more crowded with more than books. There is a big children's area with toys and a play space as well as reading material. Lots of towers with playing cards, or key chains, or magnets, dot the floor. In the back is a magazine area and in the center are their bargain books. The rest is regular price-fiction, romance, cookbooks, etc. There's a wall of t-shirts and a rack of LPs and lots of Duck Dynasty and Lego and whatever is current or kitsch. The staff greets you promptly as you walk in. They aren't annoying, but they aren't helpful either. It'd be nice if they straightened the magazines or cleared up the clutter. For a kid's store, I'd give it five stars, but for adults it's only a three. read more

This place reminds me of Barnes and Noble. The new book selection is only so-so, with a lot of shelves and trays of bargain books mixed in here and there. New book prices are full list.The magazine rack is excellent, and while not as complete as the old Borders, it's better than B&N. Perhaps half the store is filled with merchandise and toys, with a particular emphasis on TV and movie tie-ins. If you're looking for a pricey Doctor Who Tardis Cookie Jar or a Spider-Man keychain, this is the place to go. read more

This place is awesome...if you're under the age of five. For the rest of us, we are likely to: 1. Wander around wondering if you've accidentally stumbled into a Meijer clearance toys aisle. Wait, wait, no...Walmart? Is that a copy of Dumb & Dumber? 2. Finally locate some books, but then realize there's nowhere to settle down with them besides in the kids section. 3. Fight a kid for a back-less stool, and after you win and scrunch over the teeny table for five minutes, realize you're too old for this crap and go looking for coffee/snacks instead. 4. Realize there's no cafe in here, therefore you settle on some theatre-sized boxes of candy to hold you over, because this selection of random food items makes perfect sense. 5. Ultimately escape the dingy darkness and head over to Barnes & Noble (sigh) or Amazon. imissyouborders. :( read more

Books A Million is no Barnes & Noble- I can find almost any book when I make the hike to Northville or Brighton. However, this isn't a bad place. I find their social section definitely lacking, but they have a good general variety. There is an interesting selection of other items- I once got an Eiffel Tower building kit randomly here that was well received by the recipient. The staff is friendly and helpful, I have their Millionaires club membership and it's really handy as we give books for gifts quiet often for Christmas and birthdays. I prefer other stores but in a pinch of if you're on that side of town, definitely check them out. read more

I'm really happy to have a full service bookstore back in the area. BAM ins in an old Border's storefront. The selection is deep and the staff is friendly and helpful. I like the full wall of periodicals in this electronic day and age. Yes, lots of toys and trinkets and impulse items, but that is probably the price for making a bookstore turn a profit. I can do without the offer for the customer rewards card (or magazine subscriptions) every time I check out, but again, probably the price for keeping the place profitable. read more

I really like these out-of-the-way bookstores. a lot of great titles that you don't really get to see in the solid paperback or hard back. sometimes you just want it only in the book as well as have the electronic download. I really wanted a first edition steven ripple book to help complete my collection but those I'm going to have to buy on the internet. it looks like they take donations and they buy your books but I didn't really go in-depth about that they do have book club sign-ups and places you can sit around and read but no coffee shop very unfortunate. I give the staff 5 stars, very helpful and kind. the store smells a bit or they are trying to cover up that old book smell. give this place a stop into. read more

This bookstore just opened where a Borders used to be. It is really nice to have the big vacant store occupied again. We went to their grand opening and while it is set up similar to the former Borders, there is a HUGE kid's section. I overheard an employee saying this was a concept store in terms of the kid's section, I believe other stores have a coffee shop inside, but this one does not (that's ok there are 3 Starbucks within in a mile of this store) so they had room for the larger kids section. There are a ton of kid books and a lot of toys too. There is a whole display of Legos, Disney character toys (Jake & the Neverland Pirates, Minnie Mouse, Doc McStuffins, etc.), Leap Frog computers and games, arts & crafts, games, puzzles, etc.... There was a large table with coloring pages and crayons and markers. They have a story time once a week-ish. I even saw a sign that you can have birthday parties there. I didn't really check out the rest of the store, but it seems pretty bookstore standard. Though they did have a section of funny shirts which I always like. They do have a rewards membership for $20/year you get 10% off all purchases, plus coupons and specials for more savings. read more

I was happy to see another bookstore fill the space vacated by Borders. The thing about this store is that it is overly heavy in the kid's toys department, and therefore seems light on books in general. It also is missing a cafe like many of the other Books-A-Million have. If you're going because you want to have your child con you into buying them a bunch of toys - you'll be pleased as punch. They also do have regular activiites scheduled for the kids. We went on May the Fourth be With You day and we were surprised at the caliber of toys they were giving away as prizes. read more

Don't fall for their scammy magazine promotion. The pushy cashier convinced me to sign up for their free magazine promotion which was supposedly "easy" to cancel. My son was with me so of course she was pushing the Kids National Geographic which he was interested in. Supposedly you could cancel online - but that is actually impossible because you need an account. So instead you have to spend 20 minutes on a voice activated menu that asks tricky questions trying to get you to instead extend your subscriptions. You have to go through this process for every single magazine. I realize I should have recognized this as a scam from the beginning but what kind of reputable store pushes this crap on their customers? read more

The ghost of Borders haunts this place. It is eery. The selection is exactly what you'd expect for a big box book store in 2014, which is fine. Borders always had a much better selection than B&N, and Books a Million doesn't really compare. It is not the kind place I'd shop at unless I needed something absolutely last minute, which was the case. The staff reminded me of the Borders staff of yore, which is to say aloof, except for one nice cashier. They don't do gift-wrapping, incidentally. read more

9/2014 edit - This store has gotten even worse. I wonder if most of the staff even read sometimes. Every time I go in its like a ghost town. The cashiers really don't want to help you. They goof around with the announcement at night sounding very unprofessional. I've gone in there twice looking for news magazines to find the whole magazine section a horrible jumble. Last time I told them and said I couldn't find it, and they didn't seem to care nor did they offer to help. This time I did get a helpful person...who asked what sort of magazine Newsweek was. Honestly didn't know. Wow. Also I never mind much reason to go in here and buy the large stacks of books I always used to walk out of Borders with (and still do at B&N)..because there is just no where to sit but a usually messy bench by the magazines, and because most of what I want just isn't there. I hate to see real storefront bookstores die like Borders did, but I'll be pretty surprised if this one lasts very much longer here. Btw, I highly recommend Book Beat on Greenfield. They are awesome. I want my bookstores to have primarily books, maybe dvds and cds, magazines, and some CHAIRS to sit in. I don't care about cafes, but I really like to sit and make my decisions, and they only have two benches by the magazines. For books, I like a variety and of things I haven't seen before, in all sorts of subjects as I rarely buy mainstream fiction. This store does have a good cookbook section, but most other sections are a bit slim probably due to all the space taken up by the gimics. But all those are mostly minor issues. The thing that really drives me crazy and drives me away from that store, is the gauntlet of UPSELLS you have to go through just to buy things and walk out. Do you want to sign up for our card? What about signing up for a magazine? What about this thing? That thing? There are usually 2 or 3 every time I go, and they are VERY pushy about it, and even saying please no upsells please doesn't let me escape it. I know the cashiers are just doing what the management tells them to do. But management & BAM owners...you are very likely LOOSING money with this from driving people away, far more than whatever you might make from selling magazines. Many friends have alsomentioned this when we were talking about the store. I kind of get the pushing of your own store discount card though I hate that too, but magazines subscriptions? Really? Leave that to the kids doing fundraisers, and let me buy my books in peace without feeling harassed every time I try to check out.. In a time where you are competing with the big discounts and convenience of amazon, please don't make it *harder* for me to spend my money on full price books at your store. Bad move. read more

Alright so my second time here. My first time was uneventful. Today as i was checking out the sales lady was pushing their $25 membership thing to me. I understand its part of their job to try to sell memberships. What I didnt like was the used car salesman technique she used. I was woth my son and wanted to just pay and leave. Oh no i had to waste 5 minutes listening to a sales pitch and being offered some "free" magazine subscription for two months. Listen nothing is "free" ever. So it seemed like a scam to me. Besides that the store isnt bad. They do have ALOT of toys and other nonsense besides books, which I understand trying to make a buck. Please stop the hard sell of your membership. read more
