I love this school because I've been able to dig deep into the internal and self defense aspects of martial arts. John is amazing at teaching you exactly what you need when you need it. In some ways, martial arts is like that. It fits everyone's personality, whether they're in it to improve their health, or to learn to defend themselves. So long story short, highly recommended! Hopefully he learns self-defense skills as well. I took my son to this school to register, and as soon as we walked in to check out the place my son was acting very uneasy and said he wanted to go home. A class was going on at the time and the place seems a bit disorganized. We went back to the car and I asked my son if he was ok, but he just wanted to go home. I went back in alone to ask some question about the program but no one seems to care that I was there... So we came home. Later I found out one of the bullies was there in the school wearing a black belt. My son was shocked and didn't want to learn martial arts anymore. I was very disappointed! A black belt in Port Moody Taekwondo school has been bullying my son. This school is not for my son and anyone who wants to learn respect and confidence!

They deserve more than that The first thing I'd like to say is that the coaches are all awesome with the kids. When you walk into the gym they all greet the kids excitedly, when there's an accidental head but or a finger stepped on, they are there so quickly and are so skilled at turning the bad experience good with high fives, validation, and care. They took several introductory sessions before he joined the class to have a few short sessions with him and build his confidence. This was great because on his first day he walked in knowing Coach Brandon. Speaking of confidence, the program that they have for the kids that works them through merit badges has been really awesome for my son. We just made it through the first discipline series and the conversations that we had with our four and a half year old about what each stage meant were amazing and as parents we were super happy to see him thinking about what it meant to have a goal and then executing on it, for example. Is it the cheapest activity for my kid? No. But the value extends beyond that one class a week. And I'm so happy that we took the plunge. Oh, and everyone is very, very communicative about his progress and they are flexible when you need a makeup class so you don't miss out on the valuable time. I don't get that out of a lot of other things.. like soccer... Or preschool, haha. Haven't had a single negative thing to on, it hasn't ever been like pulling teeth to get him there. They offer classes for all levels and all ages and do everything they can to make you comfortable. Head Instructor, Master Woo, is kind, patient, crazy-amazing at TKD and FUNNY...the kids all gravitate to him, but also respect him at the same time (I have kept my kids in line with the simple phrase "What would Master Woo say right now?"). He is so good at what he does: keeping his students (young and old) motivated, keeping classes fun and informative, and instilling core values of discipline and respect. How he keeps a class of 20-25 children in check is beyond me, but he does it! Another gem is Program Director, GRACE! She is so good at making you feel welcome and at-home. She always has a smile on her face (it lights up the entire room) and she is always ready to do what she can to make your experience a good one, including swapping pants with you when your own pants are too short, so you don't feel like a complete moron (ahem, that was ME) during class. This is just one example of the many, many, things that Grace does to show you that she cares and wants you to be comfortable when you train. Everyone here, not just Master Woo and Grace, are fantastic instructors, each bringing their own uniqueness to how they teach. I got a groupon to try the drop in class…read more Not bad, very small and cozy gym area. I was abit confused when I walk in because the reception area and the gym area are neck to neck. It is extremely sweaty and hot in the gym if you don't mind. I went for Monday class, there is not really any structure on the fundamental teaching (although the class description says it is adult fundamental Muay Thai class). The fitness class is good, it is a circuit and plus the heat, you will sweat like a bucket, excellent warm up for the Muay Thai class. I have done Muay Thai before so I know the fundamentals but it might be confusing for someone who has never done it before. The students and the instructors are super nice and friendly. Overall it is very bang for the buck you paid for the groupon. I would go again just because I like the challenges.

I've stayed with the school and just last December achieved my 3rd Dan black belt. I'm the oldest student there, but I can say that Taekowndo has taken me out of my comfort zone many times, and that has built my confidence and helped to keep me physically young for my age.
