It's really a treat shop, selling the junk food section of a newsagent without the kitchen cupboard essentials. Great if you're in the area and have a bit of a sugar craving, or need a caffeine hit and you're not too picky when it comes to coffee - and for 65p for a large coffee you can't really complain. Due to the size of the shop however, there isn't a great deal of choice so if you can only stomach sea salt and coarse ground black pepper Kettle Chips or Green & Blacks' Maya Gold then you're unlikely to be a fan of Take a Break!

Inside a large proportion of the tiny space it occupies is taken up by cards. I was a bit disappointed as there is a card shop just over the road but not entirely as everything else seemed a bit classier, such as the jewelry. They have a few cabinets of unique earrings, necklaces and bracelets of varying price. As I write there are massive discounts on many things and up to a 70% discount on some items. This is great for the bargain hunters but I fear it has been hit by the recession and may well close down soon. This is probably because - even though it houses tasteful things - everything was a bit too expensive pre-discount. I often wandered in to have a nose around a few times without buying anything and the last time I went was not too taken. The sale signs have been hastily drawn and stuck in the window and there was a messy pile of cards in the corner, housed in the kind of shelving I would expect to find in a sandwich shop. It is a real shame to see Orchard House degenerate especially as there as new similar shops popping up in Headingley, but maybe it was badly placed?

The product I wanted was not on the shop floor so a very helpful and polite staff member offered to check the stockroom for me. They have a number of different coffees, both strengths and flavours, instant and filter varieties. They have a number of different teas too, from green, white, herbal, fruit, black, leaf, instant and bagged! Phew. Lots and lots of tea. You can buy variety packs of both tea and coffee, which make great gifts for tea and coffee lovers like myself! The only bad bit is that the majority of their products don't have the fair trade marker, which is a must for me. They also do other items such as china sets, cafetieres and so on. I bought an incredibly reasonable £15 cafetiere as a Christmas gift, together with a lovely glass mug for £4 and some coffee for £2.50! My friend was given a tea pot and cup and saucer from Whittards too, and she absolutely adores it. The shop was very tidy and the staff were efficient so everything was alright by me. I was super impressed by the friendliness of the owner when I popped in and chatted with him first thing this morning. Caring about quality artisan goods, the coffee and the ice cream (gelato) is of a high standard and I was impressed that my flat white came in the small proper serving. The coffee was good quality and after missing meals with the daily visits to hospital, the pastries were really appreciated - we welcomed the chance to finally relax. I bought loads of tins of chickpeas and they were really cheap and will last forever! It doesn't have the same kind of offers as supermarkets like Tesco etc. but sometimes it's a good thing, as you stick to buying what you actually want, and not tempted by offers! (Though I must admit, I didn't go in especially to buy 20 tins of chickpeas!) Worth a visit to check out some different foods and have a nice break from your usual weekly visit to Tesco/Asda/Morrisons etc.
