Admittedly, this is a fact I can't be sure of. I haven't been everywhere else in the world, y'see. I CAN, however, tell you that I DID try a veritable array of rum, and all of it was fine. Bear in mind, I've always been a vodka man. All other spirits are second-rate to me. (Except the green fairy, but I don't really consider THAT a spirit. It's more a monster unto itself.) But this is some good rum. The decor is great, and not at all cheap or tacky (as you'd expect from a members club), and the music complements the decorating perfectly. Though I'm not typically a fan of rum, if you've friends who love the stuff, bring them here (or be dragged along), and you'll have a gay old time. If you can claim a lounge for your own, many a deep, philosophical and ultimately meaningless conversation will be had before the night is done.

Lots of luxe fabric and billowing curtains and velvet and chocolate ottomans. Rum is the thing at Bar Cuba (Surprise!) and though I'm not a huge fan of rum usually, they make delicious cocktails and as the saying goes, when in Cuba... The music is a mix of soul funk and jazz and the people lounging around may appear casual but their dress certainly is not. This place is booked for functions a fair way ahead so if you want to have a party here you've got to be organised. And here's a hot tip: having your gig here is not a cheap venture. If you don't have the cash you can always do as we've done in the past and gate crash more wealthy people's parties. You didn't read this but... we may have snuck in on occasion. Or better yet, subtly convince your friends to have functions here so you can attend. Yeah... do that.

The Prohibition (Gin) Crew have joined the Adelaide 'small bars band wagon' and opened up this gin…read morebased bar - design studio - coffee bar in the happening part of Gilbert Street. The Coffee section isn't quite ready yet but the rest is in full swing with the rear section due for some more work including a new copper pot still arriving in January. The design business Toolbox is under the same roof, tucked in behind their coffee bar. There is obvious street appeal from its corner location with dark walls, a full glass front with a vertical lift front glass door, minimalist but not cold and kind of starting to get a look of its own. The bath tub above the bar is a great touch. Our visit was part of a North Adelaide Primary School fundraiser, where Adam, co-owner with Wes in this bar enterprise, is a parent. Our group took part in gin flights, with some mixing and experimenting of our own, along with some knowledgable commentary from Adam. Some ordered dinner with options of sliders (x3) and fancy toasties while others enjoyed an antipasto assortment. I will admit I failed to properly peruse their menu options on this occasion and whilst this is a gin focussed bar they have enough to please whomever walks in. The staff were lovely and approachable and I mention this because this can sometimes be a deal breaker for customers. They source their (wine) spirit base from the Barossa and even the tonic water and vermouth they use as mixers are Australian. Our gin offering on the night was their staple small batch 42% craft gin, the shiraz barrel 60% craft gin, and their monster 69% bathtub cut gin which should carry a warning label (great with a splash of tonic). We also got lucky and tasted a 'Christmas release' gin special with a cake like nose and obvious holiday flavours, a perfect gift or something to sip on the actual day (see photos re tasting notes). I didn't eat or drink anything on the night I didn't enjoy and I think PLC will continue to grow and attract new customers and become a regular on the Adelaide scene. I'm hoping their coffee is phenomenal. If you like a gin you need to go and if you don't just come for a look - maybe all the medals and accolades displayed around the bar will be enough for you to get curious :)

I recently stayed at the Richmond Hotel and was placed on the same floor and very nearby a VERY…read moreloud party. When I checked in, I was not informed of the party and was not provided an option to be further away from the party. By the time I realized there was an event, reception was already closed. The situation was absolutely unacceptable. I am all for people having a good time and I'm happy that party goers were making the absolute best time of themselves. However, non-partygoers should never have been placed in the room I was provided. The party was exceedingly loud with guests screaming (chants of some sort?), singing happy birthday multiple times at very loud volume, going out into the hallway (in front of my room) and being very loud. Attempts to contact reception were fruitless, as it was long since closed and they did not have any staff answering calls The party ended by about 11:30, but party goers were still out and making noise for approximately another hour. I'd hoped to talk to reception and request a refund when I left, but was unable to,as reception was closed when I left ( a Sunday). I attempted to contact the hotel via multiple electronic means for four days before I finally received a response. While they apologized and said they would refund my stay, no refund has been received and it was over a week ago. I've never seen such terrible customer service and would not recommend this hotel to anybody.

Kinda feels like Hotel Richmond, a place so steeped in the lost art of privacy that I feel like I'm the only guest in the hotel. I'm not. There are others. Many others, courtesy of Mad March and the V8 supercars, WOMACK, and the Adelaide Fringe Festival. There's only one room free in the whole shake shack, and yet it feels like I own the place. That's not easy to do. Tucked into an unassuming little Clark Kent doorway in Rundle Mall, Hotel Richmond is blessed with large rooms, lush bathrooms and beds so comfy you have to fight to get out of them in the morning. And the concierge Shane saw I was from Sydney and asked if I liked the NRL. Adelaide don't even have an NRL team but he was kind enough to ask, which I appreciated all the more when I checked in late at night. I haven't even left and already I'm looking forward to coming back.

Honestly, I preferred Magic Mountain, its predecessor, though that probably had a lot to do with…read morethose childhood memories of me never actually going there. Well, I did once, but I didn't go on any of the waterslides, which was a shame. In a way, this is just a pale imitation of that once great structure that used to sit on the foreshore like a pile of ... mud. Yeah, that describes it beautifully. I guess, though, this does look better, but it just doesn't have the charm that the Magic Mountain had.

The kid then tried his hand at some ticket-prize games before making his way upstairs to the arcade games. This is where I discovered that my kid is scarily fantastic at that Terminator shooting game. ??? A little over an hour later, we exchanged his collection of tickets for some gross sticky hand trinket and then tried some mini golf. It is by far the smallest (by size) course I've ever played on but it was nice - in view of the beach and outdoors. Would I come here again? If it was raining. Honestly, not a bad way to spend some indoor kid time.
