For the most part the "Reserve" represents the evolving concept of the Starbucks Brand. They offer an upgraded selection of pastries and cakes, some of which are really good and some that ought to be phased out. cough* their macarons. Price wise there's a slight premium, but negligible, some add-ons like the small cookie with coffee is enough of a balance. The Coffee selection is dynamic and will change by season, supply, or in most cases on a regular basis. You can't go wrong with any of them. The chocolate cake I had paired well with my strong fruity coffee that the coffee master suggested. He even he offered to explain the Clover Leaf system, which looks like a soufflé machine as it spews out foam on the top. I obviously didn't take him on that offer, so why not you go and find out for yourself.

Before we get to the staff let's talk about 1) the interior, and 2) the food. The interior of this Starbucks is gorgeous. Makes you feel like you're in Manhattan. Jars with coffee beans line the high walls behind the counter, and a full wall display of paneled wood with engraved typography adds that figurative exclamation point that "this isn't your usual Starbucks" The food is unique. I think this is true of all Starbucks Reserve branches, but they have a lot more options than your usual. Now let's talk about the staff. While I don't usually like Starbucks (overpriced/overrated), I love the feeling of coming to this branch because not only do the staff offer top quality customer service, they feel like family to me too. I've swapped book recommendations, love stories, shared my aspirations and plans with these people. Heck, they've even met my parents. I love love love the staff here. Come to this Starbucks. Be friendly with the staff. They'll make the extra few minutes to get there worth it.

Walked in last weekend during a crazy downpour, dripping wet, and the barista just smiled, handed me a towel to dry off, and asked what I felt like without any rush. Ended up with their single-origin pour-over--Ethiopian this time--and it was bright, juicy, and perfectly balanced, like every sip reminded me why I fell in love with coffee in the first place. Sat by the window watching the rain hammer Pasong Tamo, worked on my laptop for hours with zero pressure to leave. The space is still that perfect mix of raw concrete and warm light, never too crowded, always calm. Staff remembered my usual order even though it's been months since I last dropped by. Five stars, easily--still one of the most consistently great coffee experiences in Manila.

Fortunately, Habitual Coffee holds its own. Situated on a super industrial part of Pasong Tamo (though gentrification is very real and will probably make its way here very soon), it's kind of out of the way compared to most third wave coffee spots. This is a good thing though! I've never had a problem finding a seat there. The set up is great too. Very industrial. I like the large amount of natural light and sparse feeling of the place. There's a lot of exposed concrete and metal, making the place very Instagram worthy. There are also outlets, wifi, and pretty large tables so getting some work done here is definitely possible. I just wish the seats were more supportive. The coffee is amazing! I believe Yardstick sourced a lot of their coffee while I was there. Their mocha and Americano are great. Not too bitter. The only downside I have is the clientele was a little snooty. The staff, however, was great.

That was my life then and since I didn't know anything else nor had anything to compare it to, I didn't think I had it any less. The finer things in life were beyond me, one day though my old boss decided to bring my colleagues and I to La Veranda for drinks and merienda. Imagine my happiness when I was faced with items on a menu I knew nothing about. Tuna tartare with mango and cilantro, homemade foie gras (only learned to pronounce it correctly that day), watermelon gazpacho and glasses of wine- it was heavenly; so heavenly that I went to bed that day thinking about my next meal, one that would be so good it would cost a quarter of my salary.

Maybe you would be inclined to sit a little longer and be inspired to read a book... or even write some poetry? Find a nice corner by the window (fingers crossed you're not sitting beside a rowdy family), and you're off to a blissful meal or even a coffee or a drink. A great place not only for brunch but to have a relaxed meeting or a casual date. Prices are expensive but worth every penny for the view.

I had to go back to check if the spotless all-white bakery that I vaguely remembered going into wasn't a figment of my imagination. True enough, I found it after I retraced my steps from Erra's Ramen, where my friends and I were drinking. The place is still trying to fine tune its operations, but I can already say that it has quite a following among the students and the working professionals from the nearby schools and offices. This is mainly because of the nice interiors and the comfortable seating. They have several tables that are common to to Angel N Kiss Bakery and the Korean pizza place that share the same space. Apart from the comfy chairs and tables, they also have private rooms where groups can have a little privacy. The spanking new cafeteria-style place is quite hip and trendy, with its handsome wooden tables and industrial plastic furniture. What's great about this really nice place is their store hours - they open 24/7 so it is a perfect place for those all-nighters with friends. I think the ambiance is really student-friendly and very relaxing, that's why this whole food hall looks a bit out of place in the center of Malate's seedy night life. This is yet another cute Korean place that hits the right buttons when it comes to interior design. I forgot to note the exact address ,but you can easily find it because of its brightly lit sign that is highly visible from the street.
