I took a 5-Day Learn to Sail Lessons, I was with just one person so it was almost a "private" already. The staff on reception are very helpful. The boats are clean and in good working condition. We have 3 instructors total, Chris was amazing!!! Brad was funny and made us comfortable on our 4th day (Whole Day) Sail and taught us practical methods so we could sail on our own comfortably. read more

Brad Churchill is a fantastic instructor and jewel. Initially I was concerned that he would be too hard for me - given he was the BU Racing Coach for more than 2 decades. But he gets that we are just learning and is a great teacher. He knows what we are trying to learn and is sensitive to those who want to cruise v those who want to race. He helps all of us have fun and gain confidence. I learned SO much about sailing from him. Sailing Center has a lot going on all summer - courses, parties, member races, racing team, cruises....surely there is something for you if you are into sailing. If you are looking for a Yacht Club, go to the North Shore and look for "Lovie" and Thurston Howell III there. read more

I just spent most of the week on one of BSC's 30-foot Sabre yachts, and as usual, it was a great week. Just a few comments re: problems with our boat, though: The water tank supposedly holds potable water, but it was a bit funky. I think it was the water tank, anyway... the first place I noticed it was in the tea kettle, which was where I noticed it last time, too. The propane tank was empty, so we couldn't cook on board. Usually nobody uses it, so I understand why they didn't check it. They really need to replace the weather stripping... on a rough day, some of the stuff down below got wet, especially in the front cabin. Not cool. Still, this place gets 5 stars. Sailing is an awesome time! read more

A friend took a couple of us out for a day of sailing in Boston Harbor. It was a wonderful experience, despite some hiccups at the beginning. DISCLAIMER: Prior to this experience I've never sailed before, so excuse my poor sailing terminology. Our jib was torn so we had to wait for a while before setting off. The boat itself (we were on the "Mary") was decently maintained, but it could've been better. I don't know how often the boats are properly cleaned, but there were pools of water on the deck that had algae growing it it. Overall, for a day rental, it was fine. The boathouse had a decent sized locking cubby where you could store things you didn't want to bring with you on your trip. If you're bringing in on the trip, expect that it will get wet, therefore it's important to keep electronics, etc. in a dry bag. PRO TIP: On a day trip, bring some snacks and drinks in a small cooler to get you through the day. Don't forget to go before you go! ;) It was a great day, thank you BSC for the wonderful experience! read more

I'm a woman that has a fanatical sailor husband. We signed up for a 3 part course to learn sailing, so I could become the fan too! The staff are young and fun & we had some really good instruction. We actually had some amazing sailing days. I would say this team gave me the confidence to enjoy sailing- which was pretty hard to do. Am I in love with sailing- not YET- but at least I know what to do and can help out on deck. Yes, this place is great. Good community of people as well. read more

The instructors are really hit or miss. Not so much with knowledge, but with making you feel comfortable. One day I had the time of my life learning to sail with an instructor younger than me, and the next day I was being screamed at, and it was only my second time on a sailboat- ever! I wanted to jump off. The only good part of my having to stop lessons prematurely due to a sick family member is that I can read my textbook 25 times in preparation for the last two lessons when the season picks up again in the spring to hopefully avoid being made to feel like a dumbo. On a more positive note, they were VERY understanding about having to postpone the lessons so I could take care of my mom. Hoping for a better experience when I get back out there. I'm not trying to be a professional, just wanted to try something different... read more

What a great place to learn to sail - and a great place to continue to sail. A friend referred me here, and I took an intro class, then an advance class, and am progressing to the third. The sailing school offers great balance - sound instruction and principles, coupled with good sailing experience throughout the course - with very personable folks who are practical and genuine. No stuffy sailors here - just enthusiasts. It's a pretty social club as well - with regular parties, and post- race gatherings. Give it a try ! read more

I've sailed at Boston Sailing Center for the past 9 years and think BSC is wonderful for experienced sailors or for those taking their first lesson I've seen an improvement of the fleet over this timeframe and a consistent, hard working team of office staff and instructors. I am now since a bit than more three years a member of the Boston sailing center and I think it's great value for money. Especially during the last couple of years the BSC spent a lot of many for adding brand new boats to their Cruising 35 and Cruising 40 fleet. Of course there are sometimes some restrictions when it comes to boat availability and reservations but it is still a great place to meet fun people and to get on the water without the hassle of owning a boat. Came here and participated in their "free sailing" day with a group of 5 people total. They added 3 additional people onto our boat and Reed was our skipper for the day. Upon walking down to the boat one person said "Should I be worried that the person taking us out on that thing doesn't even look old enough to drive a car?" - HA! Reed was young (21) but he knew what he was doing. He taught people how to hoist the sail, flip the sale from one side to the other, and to grind. After being out on the boat for about 30-40 minutes we came back in and then enjoyed some free drinks on a large boat affixed to the shore. Great day - and glad they do those free sailing days to show you a sampling of what you could learn through their classes. I believe their classes are around $1,000 - so not something this Yelper could afford... but was still fun to have some time on the water! read more

I've been a member of the Center for several years now, sailing the Solings after work and on weekends. The staff is friendly and very professional. We can sign up for a boat ahead of time and seldom have a problem getting one. Some of the boats aren't in total first-rate shape, but we've never had a breakdown. It would be nice if they opened a bit earlier on weekends, but this is the best deal there is for sailing in Boston Harbor, which is a beautiful and very interesting place to sail! While we don't participate in all of the social activities, there is plenty going on from sailing lessons to barbecues. Total thumbs up to BSC. read more

We (my wife and I) learned how to sail at BSC 4 years ago. Small Solings. Moved up to J24's the next year, then 35 footers the year after that. Gotta say, it's a great place to learn and continue sailing. Boston Harbor is full of excitement (LNG tankers, the Constitution, 747's landing overhead), there are great quicky trips to do near the harbor, and as a cruising member... the week long cruise is great. Above all.. BSC staff make it easy & fun. Not sure if I ever want to own a boat (given costs), as the BSC member experience kinda get's you all the good, with little of the bad. read more

I just complete their Learn to Sail (ASA 101), Advanced (ASA 103), and Cruising Course (ASA 104) this summer. BSC's instructors come packed with an extensive list of experience! They genuinely enjoy teaching sailing, and encourage their students to ask questions again and again, creating a non-judgmental environment to learn from mistakes. The environment at BSC in incredible. Each time I come by BSC to sail, all my prior instructors greet me (Chris, Emilio, Brad, Burton), and ask how things are going, etc. Super personable. Additionally, BSC hosts member nights, a fantastic opportunity to meet other sailors, and connect. I regularly sail with a group of folks I met at one of their member nights. After completing these three courses, my buddy and I who also took the courses with me, will soon be planning our trip to the BVI's, chartering our own boat. This is in particular thanks to our Cruising Course instructor, Burton, who did an excellent job teaching us the skills necessary to ensure we would be confident and knowledgable sailors. He spent a lot of time going over each component of the operating systems on the boat, how to trouble shoot, day and night navigation, among many other skills. You may consider BSC to be pricey, however you get a lot for your investment. A great sailing community, top ASA instruction from highly qualified instructors, and access to a diverse and large fleet of boats! read more

Great place to learn how to sail. They have a great learn to sail program, and memberships that offer an inexpensive (or at least less expensive) alternative to boat ownership. Getting out on the Harbor provides an amazing view of the city... in an afternoon you can feel like you have been away for weeks. Staff is super helpful and nice. read more

We have had our last 2 company outings here and they were an absolute blast. It didn't hurt that both days were warm, sunny and gorgeous and last year we were fortunate enough to be out the week the Tall Ships were here. The instructors that took us out sailing were amazing instructors who were informative, funny and great guides. The view of Boston from the harbor, in a sail boat is pretty spectacular too. For non-members they also have free sail nights on selected Saturday nights (just check the website). My boyfriend just registered for a membership and I could not be more excited. Absolutely worth checking out! read more

I love this place - Went here for a recent Open House and had so much fun on a beautiful day. After we checked in, we grabbed a few beers on their docked 2 decker boat and waited for our name to be called. After about an hr they took us our for a solid 30-40 mins teaching us how to sail on a 12 ft boat. Really considering joining! read more

The best sailing center in Boston!!! The location is excellent, right across from the North End and with a parking lot that is only $15 to park all day. The boats are in great shape and the staff is always friendly and helpful! I totally recommend it! read more

I learned to sail here. I was not sure if sailing was for me so I signed up for one of their learn to sail program. Once on the water I was hooked and continually upgraded with advanced sailing and cruising classes. Since then I have been a member of the club. The staff are super friendly (Shout outs to Corey, Will, Grant, Geoff Rand, Mike O'Brien and all the others). They create such a wonderful welcoming place. The member nights are awesome and are a great way to meet other club members and to find sailing partners. I highly rate this place if you want to learn to sail. I am not usually a "yelper" but I have had enough with the rudeness at BSC. I have attended the free sailing events and thought about joining multiple times. Each time I go in or call, I find the front office staff to be incredibly rude. I am not going to spend over $1000 when the staff treats me like I am the inconvenience?? I have heard from multiple people how rude they are, and each time I am shocked management allows this. The boats are great, and the location is awesome but I'd rather bring my business where I don't have to deal with rude people. read more

A great place to learn to sail. The macro programs offer a chance to progressively move up to larger boats and obtain cruising experience. The staff are very experienced sailors and provided helpful feedback while I obtained my center certifications. They are a US Sailing certified center and you can take the US Sailing exams here as well. There is a competitive edge to the place as most of the instructors are accomplished racers, but they do understand how to approach and teach someone who has never set foot on a sailboat before. read more

Last week, I took the bareboat cruising course at Boston Sailing Center. Everything about it was outstanding starting with the instructor. Burton Robson has a rare combination of complete mastery of his subject down to the last detail, extensive cruising experience and a natural gift for teaching at just the right level and with refreshing clarity. The pre-cruise debrief was thorough and left plenty of time for questions and discussions. The cruise itself (Friday night through Sunday night) is one of the highlights of my sailing experience. The weather was perfect with a combination of calm, windy, dry and wet. Burton provided advice and direction but also let us figure things out and, perhaps most importantly, teach each other. Although we had "classroom" moments on the boat in the morning and evening, the class felt like a pleasant cruise with a group of friends. I was lucky enough to be with a crew of BSC members, all of whom were generous enough to share their knowledge of Boston harbor, their experience and welcome the "non-member" that I am. Whether you are a member of BSC or not, I could not recommend the class more highly and if Burton is available, I would ask for him specifically. I don't know the other instructors at BSC but Burton is a hard act to follow. read more
