Very unprofessional. Had initial consult, $750, put me on testosterone. I do the recommended $200+ saliva test for my HRT, called for results a week later to be told it takes 4 weeks. Called back and was told I had to make an appt, I didn't want one. Put results in my chart and give me a concoction. We have to set up a call. Carrie states she doesn't understand why I'm still tired and to do blood tests now and stay on regular PCP scripts of progesterone/estradiol (I was hoping for a concoction from her based off my results). Rec'd a call moments later saying my card was invalid. I returned the call stating I thought this call to go over results, was part of the initial $750 meeting. No. Carrie doesn't work for free, I'm told, by Val. I explained I've had nothing but testosterone prescribed for a year (my fault for taking so long to get saliva test done) and nothing else prescribed (other than their supplements) and don't feel I should've had to pay for a call that resulted with buying their supps and having a blood tests. Val tells me she'll get back to me. Response: Hi Michelle, I spoke with Carrie and she said she will waive her consultation fee, despite you having a 35 minute consult taking her time and she will be cancelling the Testosterone script. She recommends you follow up with your primary care provider on your hormones. We will note, that you will no longer be a patient at BIH so you do not receive further communication. I was referred to Carrie Ballas because I was told she prescribes NatureThroid and listens to your symptoms instead of solely relying on outdated TSH tests when treating thyroid disorder. All she really does is recommend unnecessary expensive tests not covered by insurance and try to sell expensive supplements. I do not recommend her and her shady practice. See a real doctor. She also tried to charge me for telling me over the phone she couldn't treat my thyroid condition after running the wrong thyroid labs, then calling in the wrong dose of thyroid medicine after hanging up on me. Carrie Ballas is the best health practitioner that I have ever visited. For decades I would visit an M.D. from my insurance "provider" list once a year. I was so underwhelmed that I never returned to any of them. I was exhausted all of the time. I told each of them of my exhaustion, how at least once a week I felt too tired to even drive home from work for a 12 minute commute. I reached a point where I had to stop and rest every 7 minutes on a 30 minute walk and someone referred me to Carrie. Carrie tested my TSH, Reverse T3, Free T3 and Free T4. The tests revealed that I was hypothyroid and I believe that I probably had been for decades. Carrie also ordered a fasting blood sugar test on me and I was well into the pre-diabetic zone. Both of my parents were Type 2 Diabetic. Each visit to the M.D. I dutifully filled out the "my parents are diabetics" check boxes and even the "my mother had thyroid disease" yet no one thought to test me for any of those conditions. My parents had told me what their M.D.s told them, to avoid sugar. Which I had done. I learned from Carrie that I needed to count my carbs as well and avoid processed carbs as they can be as harmful as sugar for people tending toward Type 2 Diabetes. She provided me with a glycemic index chart for foods, a healthy diet guideline and sent me to a nutritionist. I am now taking thyroid medication and have completely revamped my "carby" diet. It is hard for me to imagine that in my youth, I was so tired that I thought I would crash my car on a 12 minute drive home. Carrie is very intelligent, and so personable, she is never condescending or patronizing. Her "bed side" manner could not possibly be better. She is always up on the latest cutting edge information and spends much of her free time attending seminars and workshops to make sure that she is knowledgeable about the latest important medical and scientific information. I pay for my visits to Carrie out of pocket and it is well worth every penny to me. I will never put my precious health into the hands of any other provider, EVER. read more

BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN PROVIDING YOUR CREDIT CARD INFO: My 2nd appt was on 08/17, and on 08/24, I grabbed an older invoice I had received in the mail from this clinic & mailed in my credit card info. For "Enter Payment Amount", I put $213.28. I also made a copy of my hand-written note requesting a receipt for my payment of, yes, $213.28. After many phone calls and distress on my part, I learned the following: Heather, who runs the front desk, took my credit card number from my invoice; saw that I owed another $105 from my 08/17 appt, & without ever calling me to 1st obtain my approval, she ran my credit card for $318.76, which I found out about on 08/29/2016 when I saw my credit card statement. (I HAVE NEVER HAD A BUSINESS RUN MY CREDIT CARD FOR AN AMOUNT I DID NOT APPROVE WHEN MAILING IN A PAYMENT LIKE THIS.) On 09/01/2016, Chuck (owner of the clinic's billing company) shared his office had spoken with Heather and said she was to call me about the overcharge. I waited two weeks for the call from Heather, but never got it. So I then had to call Carrie (nurse practioner), who responded to the situation promptly. Carrie explained that since Heather had my credit card information (for when I mailed-in my payment of $213), that Heather chose at that time to go ahead run my card for an extra $105 (for a 30-day supply of probiotics & some powder that I had received at my 2nd appt on 08/17), just assuming that is what I had wanted, w/out 1st calling me to ask if it'd be ok. (That didn't make sense to me, as that I had hand-written an amount of $213 on 08/27.) An apology did not jump-out at me from Carrie (and I felt I was owed one), but Carrie did provide that explanation. On 09/19, I popped-by the front desk for about 10-minute face-to-face conversation with Heather, and she was comfortable and confident w/ what she had done, though I stated several times it is inappropriate for my credit card to have been run for an amount of $305 w/out 1st calling me. So, that entire billing situation was a draining time-suck, and I wish the office had addressed it promptly, with apology and ownership of what I saw as a clear mishandling of a client's sensitive credit card info. TREATMENT: I met with Carrie about a particular condition. She shared it didn't happen overnight & that with her suggested 'big picture' approach, we could see what was causing my body distress. That sounded great. Here is what I know now that I wish I would've known before meeting with Carrie. Carrie recommended a couple blood tests to determine if I am sensitive to certain foods. I got blood work done after my 1st appointment, and paid $325+ for that blood work. (That $325 charge was on top of my payment to see Carrie.) During my 2nd appt, Carrie thoughtfully reviewed my detailed blood work results with me, which was pretty well spelled out in a detailed, color-coded, thick packet, about which foods I am sensitive to (which were marked red). You should know that this blood work is simply a snapshot of what I was sensitive to on that one day of the test, but that it can and does change, and it is a moving target. I had thought the blood work would share a more permanent outlook, which would have been helpful to me. Now having the blood work back, my choices were to eliminate what was marked as yellow or red on the paperwork (which is basil, pepper, caffeine, etc), and then for me to determine if I felt better (which is hard for me to gauge as I wasn't feeling badly in the 1st place), or I had an option for me to pay another $300 to retake the blood test a few months down the road, as that is the only way to scientifically determine if any sensitivities had been l lowered. (I passed on that option of retaking the test for another $325.) My other option was to get different blood work done to see if I am sensitive to metals. (I passed on that option, too.) CONCLUSION: So, I did not feel there is a meaty or definitive or conclusive answer about my condition, after $325 for getting blood work done, or from my 2 appts with Carrie, other then I was very sensitive to certain food items when I got the blood work done. (Maybe other clients can reach a different conclusion from expensive blood work & 2 appts.) WATCH OUT FOR THE IN-HOUSE VITAMINS: Also, Carrie underscored buying a high-caliber of vitamins, so it was recommended during both my appts that I buy the items directly from her, so I left her clinic a bit of a 'deer in the headlights' at the end of my 2nd appt, being charged for $105 for 30 days of probiotics and a small container of powder. (Ouch, ouch, ouch.) MY TAKEAWAY: Even if the front desk hadn't run my credit card for a higher amount than I had explicitly approved (which was a violation of my trust), I still am not clear as to what helpful info I learned about my condition after 2 appts and $325 of blood work. POSITIVES: Carrie has a beautiful, soothing, caring, thoughtful, gentle, elegant bedside manner and speaks eloquently to her methods. read more

Very professional yet down-to-earth and caring. I see her for a thyroid issue, and she is always sympathetic. She has allowed me to try new thyroid meds, yet always makes sure that I am reacting well through blood tests. She caught a problem that my OBGYN did not, to which I am very thankful during my recent pregnancy. In general, she is not only a great FNP, but you can tell she "walks the walk" of health, as she is a ray of sunshine and exudes positive energy.
