Bowie State University is a gem of a school right in the heart of Prince George's County. If you are considering college, pay them a visit to see it for yourself. I have come to events on campus many times over the years, but my most recent visit was eye-catching. Significant resources have been poured into the campus as new buildings and grand refurbishments and renovations continue apace. This should be the norm for all HBCUs around the country. It is a testament to the value the state places on its universities, although the level of investment pales in comparison to College Park. The quad is the envy of other schools, some with higher endowments, tuitions, and budgets. It is big enough that it feels like a university but still small enough to feel like home. My favorite feature/building/concept is the Entrepreneurship Living Learning Community (ELLC). Home to students who want to be entrepreneurs, here they live (brand new dorms), eat, and learn (classrooms and other spaces). There is a business and creative synergy that is self evident all throughout the space. I took a cohort of school age mentees for a tour and lunch at BSU. They were over-the-moon about the Student Center Dining Hall's food and modern decor. The food choices included fresh vegetables and fruits, custom made salads and bowls, hand crafted pizza, grilled to order items, and high quality rotating items from a self-serve bar. The seating area had huge windows where the sunlight shone through. The academic and recreational buildings were top tier. But what struck me most was the energy, passion, and intelligence of the students and faculty. They treated my mentees like little brothers coming to campus to learn from older siblings. The students seemed supportive of each other. D9 organizations got along too., but the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. always raise the bar. Bowie State University should be proud of the work they continue to do and the student needs they continue to meet. Five stars easily earned! read more

Personally I've had to file multiple APPEALS due to the administration's negligence that have cost me thousands of dollars and wasted years. I've seen or even experienced misconduct in every department. I've been forced to take legal action in my case so I wouldn't wish the horrible situation or bowie state on anyone! read more

We are having a horrible experience with this university! My daughter moved out of the dorms on 23 Sep 25. They are still billing us for the dorm no matter how many she tells the she has moved out of the dorms. She is having a difficult time changing her major. Every person she talks to gives her different instructions. Email this person. Email that person. She emails and no one responds. They don't answer the phone when i call. It's bad!! She is transferring next year!! I absolutely do not recommend this school! read more

It's graduation day and it's chaos. Who's the facility coordinator or property manager here??????? Graduation is a yearly event so to drop the ball with parking and staff is ridiculous. The wait to get in was over an hour since it's a single lane to turn, which I thought was the reason for the hold up..... But it wasn't. They should have had officers administering parking and traffic from the light into the campus. They only had one officer who was more concerned threatening people he would arrest them if they didn't move. Shows he folds under pressure over traffic. Lol that's not a good look. (Mind you people don't know where they are being directed to, they are only being told "no more parking") We followed the cars to a lot that's a bit further up only to find they also didn't have parking. We parked illegally on the side because non of the attendants had answers on what to do. Everyone else followed our lead. Smh. Once you start walking to the field we had to ask random students because they had zero signage on where the field is. But they had multiple signs for the satellite buildings. Poorly executed .... Next time invest the buffet and water bottle money into hiring real police and parking attendants that speak English. read more

Proud of my HBCU!!! Although I did not start my college experience here. My experience at BSU was a new and exciting one. I met new people, learned so much about my culture and heritage from professors who weren't afraid to tell the truth, and was blessed with so many opportunities, as well as worked on campus and volunteered throughout my tenure. It is my first time going to Bowie State University. Its Fight Night at the AC Jordan Arena. The fights are pretty decent. I would opt for a nicer venue that serves alcohol. But the local fighters appear to prevail over their opponents. Good night so far. read more

As a graduate student that has taken classes here since 2018, I just don't know where to begin. This school has been the biggest disappointment. Not sure where the good reviews are coming from because myself, as well as, many other students can attest to this being a not so good school. Want a MBA degree? LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE. I cannot stress this enough. The school is unorganized and the fact that I came back for my masters was the biggest mistake. The professors do not even try to help. The BEST classes I have taken thus far in the MBA program were with Richard Knight and Tia Young. Kavita Kapur...... question marks all around. Why spend the whole semester on one project and then add on 5 assignments in the last few weeks? Samson Afolabi.... this professor was confused himself. Did not have any sort of experience working with Mcgraw Hill and this is where all our work was. Don't get me started on financial aid. All in all, want a less stressful school to attend? I thought it would only be right to write a review of my alma mater on the sesquicentennial (150th) year celebration! I am proud to say I attended Bowie State University for my undergraduate and graduate studies. It's not only one of the more affordable university's in the area, but it's also in a very convenient location. MARC train and Metro Bus accessible, Bowie State University is tucked away in historical Bowie, Maryland on 300 acres of land. Bowie State University was founded in 1865 and is Maryland's oldest historically black college/university. It falls under the umbrella of the University System of Maryland, along with University of Maryland and Frostburg State University, to name a few. One of the most underrated and overlooked university's in the area, but don't sleep on BSU because they have 22 undergraduate majors and 38 master's, doctoral, and advanced certification programs with specific focus on science, technology, business, education and related disciplines. Their nursing program is top ranked and being accepted into this program is very difficult and competitive. Over the years, the school has grown so much, that they've built new buildings and made several renovations to older buildings. Some of the professors I've had the pleasure of being taught by, have become good friends and confidants. I regularly keep in touch with some of them and they genuinely are concerned about my well being. I'm not going to write this review and act as if BSU is perfect, because like all colleges, some issues will arise, but I do know that when I graduated, I was prepared for the work force with the knowledge Bowie State University provided me. In addition, I came out of college DEBT FREE! So while you're adamant about going to Towson or The University of Maryland (both wonderful schools), check their college tuition and compare it to BSU and let me know how that works out for you. Oh and did I mention the Homecoming's? Hmmm....yeah, you've never been to a college homecoming, until you've experienced it at BSU! Bowie State University is like home! The warmth, the love and the genuine care I feel when I step on campus is indescribable. I met some of my very best friends, experienced my most difficult challenges and conquered some major hurdles, all at this University. As a first generation college graduate in my family, (PAUSE) I'm so proud of that, let me say that one more time, as a first generation college graduate in my family, I can appreciate the love and the pride that BSU alums have for their school. The term papers, mid-terms, finals, group projects, thesis, summer courses, they were all done here, for the betterment of me. More often than enough, I couldn't see it then, but I look back at those times now and see how what I learned then, has assisted me now. So NO, we aren't battling to see who is the "Real H-U" (BTW...it's Howard...IJS) and NO our sports aren't usually mentioned on the local sports stations (FYI- BSU's Football Team is currently 5-1) and NO you don't need a shuttle bus to drive around our quaint campus, but YES, we have a lot of HEART and YES, we have a lot of PRIDE and YES, you'll be pushed/encouraged beyond belief to achieve your goals. Thank you Bowie State University for assisting me on my path to becoming the educated strong woman I am today! I will forever be true to the Black and the Gold! BSUUUUUUUUU!! Underrated by far! I am grateful for the opportunity that Bowie State University gave me by providing a way for me to earn my Masters degree right out of college. Very affordable and the graduate programs are designed for the working adult. They offer on site and hybrid classes (combination of in class and online courses). Anyone looking to continue their education in or transition into the IT industry should definitely look into Bowie State's Master's of Science Management Information Systems program. They have 3 different concentrations to choose from: Information Security Management Concentration, Digital Business and Knowledge Management Concentration, and a general Information Systems Management Concentration. Personally, I choose the Information Security Management concentration since that is where my career pursuit lie at the moment. BSU has tons of other programs that they offer that I wasn't even aware of until I became a student. Most of the professors were great and the small class size made it easier to assist students on a one on one basis. On campus, the Bowie State Satellite Operations Control Center (BSOCC) is an orbiting satellite operation and control center allowing students to gain the hands-on experience in such a facility. In 2003, the center went fully operational. It is a joint venture operated by the university, the Honeywell Corporation, the Goddard Space Flight Center of NASA in Greenbelt, MD. Also, they have some of the best job fairs in state...plenty of companies and government agencies are always in attendance. I'm a prospective transfer student and so far, it's been a nightmare. I submitted my official transcripts in early June and paid the $40 fee; as of July 19th, I get an email from an advisor asking for my transcripts. I replied to the email letting them know that my transcripts were submitted electronically in June. As of this date, I haven't heard back from the University nor have I received a letter of acceptance. With classes starting in August, I am reconsidering if I want to attend this University due to their lack of professionalism. read more

Great school, that is very affordable. I have a daughter who graduated from BSU in 2016 and a daughter who is currently attending and will graduate in 2018. Dr. Brynum will be missed and the professors here are fantastic. A great college for those that want to come and learn. read more

Bowie State University has be a terrible experience. I have had some good times with the people that go here but the university itself needs a lot of revamping. I have had professors who I couldn't understand but they were the only professors available for this particular class (ex. An economics course, but I'm too busy trying to understand their accent in order to understand the class). They should have to take a proper English class or something to ensure that they are able to be understood. Also some professors know the information, but are bad teachers/explainers. There were things that needed to be paid that I had to go figure out myself because staff members didn't know. Advisors that asked me questions when I asked questions about being advised. They never knew an answer. I have received letters that things were due or I'd be kicked out of my class the DAY before the payment was actually due. There is never any parking for it to be a commuter school. The majority of professors are not willing to give any help when you ask. Most try to send you to the tutoring center which is ran by other students which helps some but they are not consistent! I know all Universities have their issues but Geez! Even when they hosted this year's graduation was a bad idea knowing the stadium is too small to even hold Homecoming. But they made sure they spent money on useless things like new Bowie State University signs all over the campus. I only went to this University because I HAD to not because I heard good things about it or wanted to. Please do better!!! read more

The school is being newly renovated. So far they have built and is operating an $80 million, state of the art performing arts building. The campus isn't big. Or should I say, small enough to walk everywhere. They have new dorm rooms that offer a cozy place to sleep (when you can) if I was a college student living on campus, I'd like it. Very disappointed in lack of professionalism and low standards. I had 3 very good professors, one of which is considered a very tough instructor, and I appreciated each of them. The gym is a joke. I don't understand how I was charged for the gym in my tuition and the pool was not open my entire time there. The building was falling apart and the same broken windows and doors were also not fixed my entire time there. Seems like nobody cares. read more

I loved Bowie state when I toured it. I fell in love with it. The atmosphere, the distance it is to my home, etc. When I went to the students admitted day, I loved it even more. I loved how welcoming the students and staff were that day. Everyone there made everyone feel welcomed and it didn't matter who you were. I'm giving it three stars though, because when I emailed a staff member there, they made it seem like I can only get the paper to switch majors on campus & that it wasn't online (not true btw). I went back to the campus to switch my major. When I went to the campus (not knowing where to go or who to get signatures from in order to switch my degree) I asked a lady if she could point me to the right person to go to. By all means it was my mistake that I interrupted her conversation, but I thought the way she responded to me was a bit harsh, (for someone who is a new student still learning the area). I guess where I'm going with this is that, even if students make the mistake first. (Especially someone who is new to the school) if I were a staff there I would've had a bit nicer reaction towards helping a (new) student. Sometimes, first impressions do make a lasting impression (especially when people are starting something new). read more

Unfortunately, I WOULD NOT recommend Bowie State University to anyone. Most of the kids are very immature and ghetto *gasps*. I live in the only on-campus apartment and the other students treat it like a section 8 project. Speaking with staff members in the offices are a headache at times. They act as if you are disturbing them by asking them to do their job. The cafeteria food is mediocre. I transferred in and unfortunately, I haven't learned anything new. I am transferring out and I am counting down the days. Just last night an on-campus concert was shut down because of numerous fights and even after everyone cleared out of the building more fights started. It seemed like a riot. Most of the security guards/police officers are a joke. I was here when a girl lost her life because of an altercation between herself and her roommate. An event which could have been prevented if Residence Life did their jobs in assigning rooms. Parking is bad. Most kids come here and spend most of the day in the game room or smoking weed in the dorms and on campus apartments. I am an out-of-state student so unlike most in state kids who come here because of the affordable education, I came here because it was the only school who's application deadline was the latest (this is what I get for waiting til the last minute to relocate). There are some great professors then there are some professors who come to simply get a paycheck. Go to UMUC, UMD, Towson, HU, anywhere but here unless you like the nonsense this school will put you through. read more
