[3.5 Stars] Stayed…read moreat this cute hotel tucked away in the corners of Tavi in early February. The rooms are extremely cute and charmingly appointed in antique finishes, fine soaps, novels, robes and slippers, a box of teas and shortbread cookies (packaged, not fresh), and a bottle of water from their true roman well. The staff greet you warmly at the door and seem to remember you like an old friend. The downstairs looks like an old tavern with plush arm chairs and couches. The hotel has a great restaurant for dinner with Michelin like entrees. (Will try to post photos of my meal later). The breakfast offerings were a little sparse, but pleasant. They always had a table with my room number waiting for me. The service was very doting, but inconsistent unfortunately. When I had asked about travel information for the area, they sat me in a huge antique chair and brought me a huge basket of travel books and old pamphlets. They even pulled books from their downstairs shelves and insisted I keep them during my stay. The night manager (or owner), offered to have horse riding reservations made for me at ranches they had relationships with and have me driven anywhere I wanted to go in the area. He told me to just talk to the staff in the morning, but when morning rolled around, the staff didn't seem to be in on all the promises nor did they know anything about nearby stables. Was fine. They helped make other calls for me and get me pricing, but a little odd. The day staff was definitely not as helpful nor knowledgable. There was a slight musty smell in my room. When I asked if all the rooms were like that, I was really impressed with their response. They moved my things immediately to a much larger much nicer room. The next room unfortunately was a bit musty too, but enjoyed the upgrade enough, that it didn't really matter. They have wi-fi at a cost. It unfortunately seemed a little spotty. Had to ask them to bounce their router a couple times, but they always accommodated as quickly as they could. Not perfect, but enjoyable enough. Would definitely consider staying here again.

This is a very nice hotel in the centre of Tavistock. A very relaxed, quality feeling full of anticipation of being completely spoilt! The menu looked delightful but was about £30 a head as I recall which is, I think, quite expensive for a non-special occasion. Highly regarded by several people who's opinion I would trust and on the list for the next special occasion. The chefs often win prizes in national competitions and the accommodation is, I believe, very stylish although I don;t have first hand experience of it.

We arrived after 10pm after our flight to…read moreExeter was delayed, and despite the late hour, the friendly staff on checkin couldn't have been more accommodating to quickly get us into our room. The Premier Inn "experience" is one of comfortable rooms, quiet (no noisy slamming doors!) and with black out curtains. The result is a great night's sleep. The next day we enjoyed the hot buffet breakfast, featuring everything from sausages, hash browns and eggs to Porridge, Toast, Fruit, Crumpets and more. It was really tasty! The hotel is located directly on the sea front and a few minutes walk from town. Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the hotel, and Premium Wi-Fi (to watch streaming movies, etc) is available for a reasonable £5 per day. I can't think of a single fault with our stay, and I'd happily stay here again!

I got a room in the attic which was very cozy and felt more like a guest room in someone's house than a hotel room. Slight minus that the hot & cold water was in separate taps and the shower was hand-hold only. Though it ads charm, it also makes it feel a little dated. The breakfast was 5* and their restaurant is mentioned in the Michelin guide. That's definitely beyond the basic B&B food you'd expect. Another minus is that Wifi is an extra £8/day, but lots of hotels charge for that in Europe.

Setting = Moorland edge Food = Crafted to a higher level Staff= Performed their tasks with precision _ I only drank water, as it was a long way to drive and I wasn't going to drink. Yet like magic just as my glass emptied, they would re-fill it. I have to say I drank my water glass dry many times as it was such fun watching them fill it up again! The food did taste special _ not only the taste, but the texture, goodness knows what sort of sieve they used to get things so smooth. And some of the dishes were feats of engineering. I think I was just enjoying being delighted. Another nice thing was I especially didn't dress up smartly just to see how the staff would behave towards me. And hats- off-to- them...they treated us exceptionally well; which inwardly made me giggle as we both were wearing our 'Star-Trek' T shirts that day. I would recommend going to Gidleigh which falls under the auspices of Michael Caines the chef and not the Cockney Actor (Sir Michael Caine). SAVE UP and go, just the once it is worth the trip, I promise! March 2010 We returned. Our Expectations were higher this year based on 2009. Somehow it does represent good value for money. Even today the impression they made on me is glowing! I would urge anyone to make an effort and get out to Chagford. Gidleigh is on my list of Top things to do for ultimate pleasure. This is the ultimate escape…read more The manual to using this resort is extremely simple: get here by horse. Contact the hotel to arrange this. If you can't ride horses, a helicopter may be a good alternative. For those of us not reading the manual, remember that you'll be driving on 10 feet wide roads lined by thick, 600-years old oak hedges. They are enlisted cultural heritage and protected by UNESCO. In other words, it's exactly the same roads people used 600 years ago. Quite an experience. No matter what your GPS says, a car journey form Exeter will take you at least 3 hours. The hotel operates time slots for alternating directions of traffic - check your arrival time with them. If you are coming for dinner only, time planning is even more crucial. Quite rightly, the butler will simply not let you skip courses. They will be served in the intended order without exception. In the case of an 8-course dinner, expect it to last until 11 pm. Whether you arrive on a horse or dig your own tunnel, you haven't lived until you come here.

This was like a beautiful summer day following a cold, dark night. The building was built in the 1860s and carries much of its original charm while serving a new purpose. The only caution is that it's up the hill a bit. But this is Torquay; everything is uphill. We would love to come back yet again (we came once a couple years ago, and returned again for this visit).

This is a…read morelovely old Victorian villa close to the seafront with beautifully decorated rooms full of English charm. The absolutely best part of staying here is the breakfast of fresh fruit and what they call a 'Full English' cooked breakfast. Yummy. Neil and Sally are such interesting innkeepers and couldn't have been more welcoming with their offering of tea and cakes. A very well run B&B, totally clean and very comfortable. We highly recommend that anyone visiting Devon stay at Torcroft.
