The hosts are also very knowledgeable on the area and after a short series of questions were able to suggest a different itinerary that ended up in the most amazing experiences for us. The is a wide selection of things you can take back to your accommodation or hike to have happy belly memories of halls gap.

And yes, the carrot cake was delish. The next day we gave it another go and popped in a little after noon and we were told that the kitchen was closed because they ran out of food. Seriously? What a disappointment. The look of this place is very minimal with a touch of nature, it fits perfectly into Halls Gap with their living local standards, it's displayed clearly in the menu. You even have the opportunity to stay here, as accommodation is available. Or maybe pop in before a hike, they have some ready made goodies in the fridge along with many local products for sale.

There is no doubt it is the "best" (whatever that means) cafe in Casterton, BUT it is not somewhere I would go regularly for a coffee based on my single visit. 4 stars in the Casterton, but in Melbourne it would be getting three, maybe 2.5, as a great cake shop and venue, but not such good coffee. As I don't know what they are trying to be, I'm erring on the side of caution. They grind Lavazza beans. I had a slice of hummingbird cake, which I thought tasted a lot like hummingbirds. The staff didn't appreciate my queries about how they catch the creatures..... Maybe that's why my coffee tasted a bit like a dusty vacuum cleaner bag. My friend had a sponge roll, which was great, and possibly the biggest slice of cake I have ever seen. It came filled with cream, and topped with berries and bits of mint chocolate. If the rest of the food is half as good as the cakes, this is a keeper as a snacking and dining experience. Not a lot of seating, so it is probable busy most of the time, which adds to the experience, but we got funny looks asking to take an unused chair form a neighboring table. Maybe the done thing is not to ask in Casterton? Maybe they just didn't like the cut of my jib and undertones of Kiwi accent? The staff were cold and seemed rushed or flusters by something (see previous sentence above), certainly not service with a smile, and the cakes arrived pretty much as we had finished our coffees. If this was a ploy to make us have another one, it failed on two counts: 1) the coffee was dusty tasting; and, 2) they didn't offer us a second one. My coffee and cake cost me $9, same for my friend. Furthermore, there were plenty of chairs available for me to sit down with my coffee and have a bit of a read. The atmosphere in the cafe was quite lovely, and they even had some good breakfast options (which silly me didn't partake of). This is definitely a pretty decent cafe, and certainly one to check out.

It's a very easy merge back on to the major road though so it's not a big detour if you are already in Derrinallum. The cafe is welcoming and has almost industrial feel courtyard. No shading though so it is weather reliant. Staff was very friendly and the cafe appear to have loyal locals visiting regularly. Chai latte was served with Bonsoy and delicious. I spied some good selection of cakes and cookies in their cabinet, some appetising pies and sandwiches and a small lunch / breakfast menu. Didn't go through it so I don't know what's on the menu card but I saw a couple of lunching groups who seem to be enjoying the cafes offering . This is a cafe worth stopping at if you are on the drive by and I would definitely come back to try more things.
