You see, I wanted to go and have a beer at the Cavern Club, and discovered that I had ended up walking into the Cavern Pub, which is the sister pub, but not quite the same one (though I believe that the original one is no longer there). Still, this place isn't bad, and you don't have to pay to go inside, which is cool. They also have regular bands, though these bands pretty much play Beatles covers. Oh, and you aren't out of place if you happen to be wearing a Beatles t-shirt (as I happened to be doing at the time).

Well, the reason I went inside and ordered a beer was simply because I thought the name was pretty cool, until I realised that it was because there used to be a slaughterhouse in the area. Yeah, it isn't too bad a pub, but it didn't really jump out at me as some of them have. Yeah, it's nice, but there are no doubt much better ones in the area.

Whilst it remains s a cheap and cheerful pub run by friendly staff, the only people likely to frequent The Grapes these days are nostalgic locals and tourists. Both the decor and layout have changed since the Merseybeat days and the whole place could do with a bit of TLC and elbow grease. If you're drinking spirits, there's vodka, whisky and so on but the beer section is disappointing compared to other pubs in the city. Ironically, the worst thing about The Grapes these days is the entertainment. It might have housed the hippest Liverpool band back in the day but it now runs deafening karoake sessions early evenings followed by average singer-songwriters and bands.

As soon as you walk in, you're transported into your eccentric Uncle's attic. Everything you could think of adorn the walls (including chamber pots), and as you wander over steps and stairs to get to various areas of the bar, you find more and more cool things to look at. Someone, who I'm guessing was a regular, told me that the murals on the wall were painted in the late 20's as a repayment for a bar tab the painter couldn't afford. Whether it's true or not, it's the perfect story for the pub. The decor is extremely warm, with its deeply colored murals, blazing fireplace and leaded windows. I just simply feel good whenever I'm here. The regulars are colorful, hard drinkers and the bartenders are about the same. They all seem to truly enjoy their home away from home. Make sure you tip, though! The owner of the bar has a few rules to keep her place in line and are common courtesy acts you should be doing anyway. I hear they have great food, but the only bits I've ordered were crisps munched on over a really fun quiz they host each week, made even more enjoyable by the patrons and host shouting things at each other from various nooks and crannies of the pub.
