I search for my nearest machine shop thinking they're professionals they should be able to get the job done. I showed & told them I needed the gears removed if they were capable of doing it to which they responded yes, then quoted me $130. I show up to pick my part up to see it completely damaged & unusable. Never got asked if it was okay to scratch the part up or anything of the sort so I had no choice but to take the part back like that after being charged. They showed no remorse for ruining the part & said they'll only charge me half what they quoted me. I WAS CHARGED FOR MY PART BEING RUINED. Highly suggest looking elsewhere for small projects like mine if you have valuable parts you want worked on professionally.

Several years ago, Thomas made a small piece I needed for the electric seats in my 1992 Porsche…read more968. Every place I went to until I met Thomas told me they couldn't make the part. It looked like my only option to get my electric seats working was to replace the seat rails from the Porsche factory at a cost of $1,200 per seat. Thomas told me he could make the part and he did. It was an exact replica of the piece that broke. His price for the part was $90 per piece. Photos of what he made for me are attached. The part is 1-1/8" x 12/16" x 3/8". I got two sets (two pieces per seat) from him so I would have a back-up in case the part broke again.

Fast forward to this instance where I have a batch of rotors that I needed to be turned down 1mm each side. Call him, describe what I'm needing and ask if he has a rough estimate on price. He asks me to text pictures, I jot down his number and then send him pictures shortly after. Gave him an hr or so and called him back to see if he received the pictures. Doesnt reallt acknowledge it and is pushy to have me bring them in and that he can do it. I'm about 25ish mins away, but he insists that he'll be late at the shop and that it's no problem. I bring in 1 rotor to see if he can still give me an estimate and he suggests he can help me bring in the rest of the rotors, about 10 in total. As we're bringing them in, I ask him again how much he's thinking it's going to be and he mentions $50 each. At this point, it's beyond the threshold in which the supplier was going to reimburse me for so I ask if I can just machine 2 rotors for now and figure out what can be done with the supplier. The next week rolls around and days go where I dont hear anything. I text him and no response for a day or 2. I call later the following week and he gives me a response like the rotors have been done and that he's been waiting on me. I ask him texting is the best method of communication since he originally asked me to text and he said text is good. I ask him if he's been receiving my texts in which he responds with affirmation. I go to pick up the rotors and come to find out that he only did a single rotor in which I ask when the other side would be done and he says in about 1-2 business days. I say that's fine and then mention that I'll leave that single rotor behind and grab the rest. He then mentions that if I in doing just 2 rotors, that the price would be $100 each. At this point, I'm no longer feeling like this is about money and get the impression that he's just a shady crook now trying to take advantage of people. I'm a little shocked at the pricing at this point and ended up just taking all the rotors back and paid him his $100 to machine a single rotor. Ended up having another shop do the for $20 each

I Googled machine shops near me and PL Machine popped up just down the street. Arrived at 3:47 (13 minutes before they close). Stephanie welcomed me and proceeded to call Andrew to look at my issue. I decided to give Engine Supply a try after my previous engine developed a major oil consumption…read moreafter a rebuild. I have yet to disassemble and determine the cause on that engine. I needed some cylinder head refresh work done on a replacement engine and took my head here. It's for a bmw s54 engine. I understand Engine supply does a lot of domestic work but will also do European and Japanese engines. After speaking with one of the guys, I found out that it's a family owned and operated company. The guys are definitely knowledgeable. The cylinder was picked up and was in great clean condition as expected by a good machine shop. What impressed me was they took me to the back to show my cylinder head during assembly when I dropped off my valve seals. The shop is well organized and clean. When I picked up the cylinder head, the Machinist who worked on my cylinder head also mentioned that the valves were returned in the exact order it was removed, which makes putting the shims I removed back it the same order easier to adjust the valve clearance on assembly. The cylinder head was assembled back into the used block. And is now running in the car without any oil consumption. It has done multiple track days without issue. I worked here as a welder for about 3 months, and honestly, this was one of the worst work…read moreexperiences I've had. I was eventually let go because I was told the supervisors weren't happy with me, but what really bothered me was the way I was trained and treated from the beginning. I was brought into the company with incorrect or very limited training, and then expected to perform like I had already been properly trained. Peter was one of the supervisors over me, and in my experience, he did not have the welding knowledge needed to properly train someone. There were times when I needed actual instruction or guidance, but instead I felt like I was being criticized for things I had never been properly shown. The supervision in general was terrible. My experiences with both Peter and Jason were consistently negative. The communication was disrespectful, and I never felt like I was being treated like someone who was genuinely trying to learn and do a good job. One situation that really stuck with me was when Peter made a comment about me while I had my welding apron tied around my waist. He told me, "I look like a girl." I didn't even say anything to him about it because I was there to work and didn't want unnecessary problems. Somehow, later on, I was the one being treated like I was causing an issue. At one point, Peter even threatened to send me home because he thought I was arguing with him when I was simply trying to communicate. The shop environment itself was another major issue. There wasn't adequate ventilation for welders, which is especially concerning when you're spending hours welding and dealing with welding fumes. The condition of the building was also poor. The insulation from the roof was falling apart and coming through the cheap ceiling in the shop. It made the workplace feel poorly maintained and not like an environment where employee safety and working conditions were being taken seriously. There also wasn't a consistent amount of work, and the equipment and resources available were limited. It was difficult to stay productive and develop as a welder when there wasn't always enough work available and the shop didn't have the resources or equipment I expected to properly support the work. What makes the whole situation frustrating is that I actually came into this job wanting to work. I'm young, but I take welding seriously. I wanted to learn, improve my skills, gain experience, and build a career in the trade. Instead, I felt like I was put into the position with poor training, limited resources, poor working conditions, and then blamed when things didn't work out. There was also a very negative atmosphere in the shop. Instead of feeling like a place where younger workers could learn from more experienced people, it often felt like there was unnecessary negativity toward younger employees who were motivated and trying to move forward. Looking back, this experience showed me exactly what kind of work environment I don't want to be part of. The biggest problems, in my opinion, were the lack of proper training, poor communication, lack of consistent work, limited equipment and resources, poor ventilation, and the overall condition of the shop. If management actually wants to improve this company, I would start with the supervision, training, and basic working conditions. New employees need proper instruction, clear expectations, constructive criticism, adequate equipment, proper ventilation, and a workplace that is maintained to a reasonable standard. Employees also shouldn't have to put up with disrespectful comments from supervisors just because they're trying to keep their job. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this company to someone looking for a place where they can learn welding, grow their skills, and be treated professionally. I came in wanting to work and improve, but I left feeling like the company failed to provide the training, environment, equipment, and professionalism I was expecting.
