We were looking for a spot for dinner that was close to Schönbrunn palace and noticed this online-it's a short, easy, 15-minute walk from the palace gate to the restaurant situated in a pretty little village just outside the palace walls. It's a big lively beer hall with big long tables and lots of groups enjoying themselves after work. Our table for two, situated upstairs in this massive place was the exception. Waiters were efficient and we they provided us with English menus to make choosing from their dozens of options easier. Like other Austrian restaurants we've visited this trip, the portions are massive-they make the US-sized big portions look small. My wife's chicken "schnitzel" (thin pounded chicken breast) was two large pieces that each covered the 10" dinner plate and was served with about a pint of German potato salad while my fresh fish (fried perch) wad two 8" long pieces, about an entire head of steamed broccoli and a couple of cups of buttery parsley potatoes. In addition we ordered their version of a caprese salad (tomatoes and fresh mozzarella with basil) that also filled an entire large plate. I suppose owing to the size of the restaurant (must seat at least 300-400), the food arrived super quick-salad in about 5 minutes and main courses very shortly after. With a couple of glasses each of a local red wine, the entire meal was less than 50€! Unfortunately we couldn't even eat half the food although from our perch on the 2nd floor looking down across the balcony, we did observe lots of local people, including women, who did! Lots of reviewers critiqued the staff, but we came anyway because the complaints were about the staff and not the food. We found them to be friendly and busy. We sat outside in the shade and enjoyed the buffet. We were pleased to find a green salad and a hot veg dish among the regular Austrian fair. It was good. Delicious, we were not sure what we wanted but it had to be Austria / German cuisine... I didn't come to Austria for Italian, sushi or Asian food. After perusing Yelp, we decided to try this restaurant just down the street. Great choice. It was already busy but we found a table outside on this beautiful evening. The newspaper style menu was on the table and looked like it was newly printed with all of the latest and greatest items. There was one problem... it was in German. We asked for an English version and it quickly appeared. We decided to stay with an old faithful... mozzarella and tomato appetizer which was very light and tasty. I followed with the chili herb chicken which I loved but the rice didn't do it for me. Joe had the traditional breaded and fried chicken with potatoes. The chicken was very light and tasty with no sign of any grease and the potatoes were sooo good. Our server, we didn't get her name, never stopped running but took good care of us along with everyone else. This was a fantastic casual dining experience and I would do it again. read more

This was our first meal in Vienna, Austria. I asked one of our friends for a recommendation for a restaurant with typical Austrian food and this place came up more than once. Also it was very close to our hotel which was a huge plus because we didn't really have lunch. The service was good and friendly. I don't have any complaints about it and they had an English menu for us. When I looked around, it looked like this was the place where locals also came, not just tourists. The men at the table next to us ordered some beer that looked really tasty. So we said we wanted that. Basically it was citrus beer with seltzer water. A beverage typically ordered on a hot day. And it was very hot that day. And this drink was very refreshing! Then my husband ordered the Wienerschnitzel, the typical Austrian dish. This version was pork. And it's served with potatoes. I ordered a chicken salad. So it was strips of breaded fried chicken which was yummy, not dry. And salad with a drizzle of Styrian pumpkin seed oil. Good stuff! After trying it at this place, I did order dishes with that oil dressing again. I definitely brought some home for my own salads. Also, the ambience is nice. There is an indoor area, but when the weather is great, you must sit under the trees in the outdoor courtyard. Or so affectionately called "beer garden". This is one idea the Austrian's definitely do really well. The beer is top notch and the gardens are welcoming. It's a concept my husband and I will always remember and long for. read more

It was our zoo visit day and it was freezing. Most of animals there were not outside and we decided to look for a place to have something hot to drink and rest. However, we could not find any open seats at several cafes in the zoo. Cold and exhausted, we walked out of the zoo and looked for a place to have lunch. It was very fortunate to find this nice restaurant which serves variety of meat dishes, soup, salad, and of course great drinks! We ordered our favorite white sausages with salad and hot soup. They were delicious with a tall glass of dark beer. Service was good, too. read more

HUGE portion & very good prices. They didn't have an English menu when we went but the waiter was super nice and explained what each item was. It was the first time a waiter was super friendly to us in Vienna & not to be stereo typical or anything but our waiter looked like this huge scary German dude. We ordered one ribs, a artichoke pasta and two beef broth soups one with normal liver dumpling and one with cheese. The cheese one was amazing and I highly recommend it. the normal liver dumpling one was standard. The ribs were big enough to feed a family of three or four. they tasted very good and the potatoes that came with it were amazing. it also came with three different dipping sauces, i'm not sure what sauces what but the white sauces were delicious. The pasta was very cheesy, a lil too heavy for my taste palette but very good. The ambiance was very casual and there is also indoor seating. read more

Brandauer's is a big, cheerful, busy place located right outside the Schloss Schonbrunn. That means it gets busy with tourists and locals alike - and what's not to like? First, the restaurant is in an old dance hall which makes for a very fun atmosphere. I loved the fake tree near the central bar which was hung with beer bottle "ornaments". The menu is fairly traditional, so we went with traditional items. I had tafelspitz which came in its own tureen and was a huge portion with plenty of vegetables. Sadly, the meat was pretty tough and fatty but I really liked the potato cakes that came with. My husband went with the schnitzel which he liked well enough. The food isn't anything to write home about, but the atmosphere is really fun. I could see coming back here on a sunny day to sit outside with friends. read more

The traditional rack of ribs are amazing!! It was well seasoned and very tasty. It came with three different sauces: tartar sauce, some tomato based sauce and ranch. I personally liked the ranch-like sauce with onions on my ribs. It was delish. The ribs were a big serving. We ordered two orders of the ribs and one order of Cordon Bleu and that fed a family of 5. Our waitress was very friendly and was very helpful in helping us decide what drinks to order. Our waitress recommended the first beer I've ever really liked (it was a light beer). But my parents who appreciate a good beer, really loved the mixed (dark and light beer). It is probably a good idea to make a reservation if you plan to go. We got there around 6pm and there was still space but when we left around 7pm, most of the tables were filled up. read more

Located close to Hietzing and the Schönbrunn garden, you'll find wonderful settings (big and very agreeable garden under big trees!) and some of the best Austrian food in Vienna, served in huge portions, like the Austrian hospitality wants it! Apart from the bear, the highlights are definitely the meat meals, again quite enormous but very tasty and well cooked and seasoned! I would recommend to choose from their weekly menu, the offer is amazingly tempting and often putting a delicious twist on traditional meals. I would have given 5 stars without hesitations of it wasn't for the unfriendly waiters, obviously overtaxed by the number of customers. This place did the trick in terms of feeding our large group. We all ordered the lunch buffet which had a wide assortment of food. I wasn't too impressed by their ribs as other reviewers had mentioned- seemed kind of dry to me. Our server was pretty good- not super rude, pretty friendly. Brandauer's Schlossbräu is a must-eat restaurant while in Vienna. It is located around the corner from Schloss Schönbrunn palace. Set in a picturesque courtyard, they have both indoor and outdoor seating. Everyone sits outside at the courtyard picnic tables which has the look and feel of an Octoberfest venue (which it is). As we sat under the shade trees strung with lights, we noticed everyone drinking large steins, mugs and glasses of beer. The menu is traditional Bavarian, thus making it our first official Austro-German culinary meal. Then what do we do??? We started with a caprese salad appetizer LOL! It was delish but not Austrian LOL... My main entrée was the Hühner Schnitzel (chicken schnitzel) perfectly breaded, seasoned and pan fried. Served with quartered, butter-roasted potatoes. The other entrée was the Hühner fillet plate (pan seared seasoned chicken breast) served with a mountain of seasoned yellow rice. All of the food was excellent. The courtyard setting beautiful. Europe is still full of cigarette smokers so be weary of your seating location... They do have free Wifi and will provide the password if asked. read more

Service sucks and they are not that friendly but I have to say we had beef soup and garlic soup and I loved both of them and also got cut up butter lettuce with salad dressing which was super simple but I liked it :D ... not sure if I just had taste for it but I would order it again.. But overall I am already spoiled with good service and nice atmosphere which I can´t say this place offers. If you want to just quickly stop by and get some good soup I recommend but don´t expect too much. read more

The brandauer's is a very famous pub that also serves traditional viennese food. It is fairly big and always full, especially in summer time since it is located next to one of Vienna;s main attractions, the Schoenbrunn castle and zoo. it is enjoyable but there are better places to drink in Vienna. read more

Avoid at all costs. When you're near Schloss Schonbrunn, find somewhere else to eat. Incredibly rude, passive-aggressive waiter made this a very, very bad experience.This isn't at all the norm for Vienna, which is rightly known for marvelous, respectful service.
