There are a lot of superlatives, but one downer is the nastiness and lack of politeness of some of the life guards.

Our family loves the Brandywine YMCA. They have so many programs for the kids, great classes for adults and two pools.

I joined BlkOps in December of 2017. Prior to joining, I was a member of the Y for years. More…read moreoften than not, I paid for the Y without actually going, and when I did actually make it there, it was only to use the treadmill--literally only the treadmill--because I was scared and intimidated and it was the only piece of equipment I knew how to use. I immediately felt at home at BlkOps. The owners, Antonio and Kelly, and their team of coaches all supported me and helped me to grow. In my 2+ years there, I have learned SO much about lifting weights, conditioning, eating nutritionally, and feeling confident in myself. Now, when I am away from home, I feel confident in writing myself a challenging and effective workout and in marching directly into a hotel gym to execute it. And I don't even touch the treadmill. On top of all that I have learned at BlkOps, I have gained some incredible friendships. Each member of the gym inspires me daily and helps make the gym feel like a home away from home. Because of these people and because of the challenging workouts that we persevere through together, going to the gym is now my favorite part of the day. I've gone from basically donating my money to the Y to working out on an almost daily basis. Oh, and also, I look a lot better now than when I first joined. If you're looking to build on your existing fitness knowledge (whether you are a complete novice like I was or whether you already have a lot of experience), if you want to be challenged daily, if you want to join an incredible community, and if you want to look and feel dramatically better, BlkOps is the gym for you!

Having recently worked out there myself, I can say I easily agree. The Owner, Antonio, was immediately welcoming. While the space is not incredibly big, you can quickly see that every nook and cranny has been thoughtfully and strategically utilized. The equipment is fresh and clean and the classes are never over crowded. Those that I worked out with were equally welcoming and encouraging up until the workout was through. I highly recommend BlkOps if you are new to the area or looking for a gym to surround yourself with great people and great workouts.

But, even understaffed they keep the place pretty clean. The tanning beds are great and they offer booths if you want. I've also never had an issue getting the message chair or water bed when I am looking to cool down after a workout. Plenty of locker spaces and it's a bigger location so even if it's crowded, you can find a spot. They don't have a ton of the same machines, so if someone's working you may have a wait for a certain machine especially during peak hours. This location also doesn't have free weight benches.

Staff is great! My issue with the manager is this....1. The…read morecondescending tone in which she speaks to people makes you want to punch her in the damn face. Ask her a question and she is defensive and condescending. I ran a service business for 15yrs and now I run a non profit helping the homeless and she should not be in a service position dealing with customers. She is unfriendly, never smiles and if she does it's blatantly obvious it's forced. I'm not the only person that has said these things so I know it's not just a me issue. Let's get to number 2 issue: I'm a black card member, I'm also retired aside from the non profit I run. So I use my black card spa membership and I sit in the spa chair for long periods of time compared to other members, doing work for my non profit on my phone and sometimes just watching a video when I'm not working out. If you ever filled out a grant application you know how long that takes. The issue: The manager comes to me the other day in a nice tone of voice and says can we talk a minute as I'm sitting there. I said sure, she says she has been getting complaints from others of me sitting here all the time. (That's what I pay $10 extra a month for ) I said why are they complaining there has never been a time I was here when all the seats available are taken and someone could not sit? So her tone switches to the condescending voice and says....well, we have more people in here and as the manager I'm to get rid of the problem and you are it . Oh so I'm a problem that I'm using the service I PAY FOR !! I was this close to punching her in her face for the condescending tone in which she spoke to me. I'm over 50 and this little bowl haircut wench is not talking to me like this. But I held my temper. She said do you have any questions, I said not right now I will think about it and let you know. Basically I'm thinking.... get away from me before I punch you in the face like you deserve. Keep in mind, she is standing at the side of my chair looking down at me instead of in front of me like a normal human being. Long story short....a few minutes later I voiced my opinion to her nicely again that chairs are always available ,I don't make a mess and I pay for this service like everyone else. In her condescending tone she says ....did you read the part of your contract where the manager has the right to quell any issue within the gym? And I'm the issue ! SO NOW utilizing the premier spa membership that I pay extra for each month I become AN ISSUE !! I've yet to find that in the contract by the way. Nor anything that says I can't spend as much time as I want anywhere in the gym. I said nicely as I always had from the beginning ," out of respect ,I will try and cut my time down sitting in the spa". Which I have considerably ,by half. We parted ways and left it at that . Now today, I find out after asking about something on my account ,she made a note on my account on 1/16 saying she asked me to limit my time in the spa and " I said I would think about it "' and went back to watching my movie .....which is total bullshit and a lie. I had said " I would think about it after she asked if I had any questions in our early conversation". And then after I spoke to her again I said out of respect ,I will try and cut down my time sitting here even though I disagreed that I should have to leave. It's a good gym, like I said all the staff are great. But this manager....should not be in that position. Especially when she lies about a member in the system, and she does NOT know how to talk to people. I'm guessing the real issue is.....she knows who I voted for through overhearing my conversations with other members and staff while she was standing there. And since her TV tells her so, it makes me ...anti lgbtq which she is clearly a member of ,and I'm a white supremacist neo Nazi fascist hater.Which is furthest from the truth but......you can't fix stupid. This is the only interaction I've had with her aside from me putting in a part time application for a job just to keep busy prior. She hired someone else,no biggie. It was an Im here all the time anyway kinda thing for me. I let our last interaction go until I seen this bullshit lying note on my account about our conversation she made up. So planet fitness.....is it your position that you want to charge members an extra fee for black card membership each month and then tell those members you can't use it or you've used it to much ? Because that's what this comes down to aside from the manager who is clearly just a miserable individual in her every day life and doesn't like people that don't align with her beliefs. . So Planet Fitness, is it also your position that a lgbtq manager can kick out a conservative from your gym just because we voted against your managers belief?

Recapping my experience training at Art Fitness gym is something that is actually pretty difficult…read more Difficult because, truly, I do not know where to start. But I guess the best place to start are the days leading up to my first session. I was in the beginning weeks of my senior year of high school, and all throughout my first three years, I was just a quiet kid. I did not always say much, and because of this I did not have many friends. I struggled with this a lot because my personality is NOT quiet or shy in any way. So, as I started senior year, I wondered why I just could not put myself out there, and be a social person. One day, my parents asked me why I seemed sad or depressed, I told them. My lack of confidence as a person had been holding me back these past years, and because of it I was not where I wanted to be in high school. I look in the mirror, and I do not like what I see, which leads to me just sitting in the back of classes, going home right after school, basically hiding. I tell you this part of my life because, although it is sad, those days are gone. Within a week after telling my parents how I was feeling, I signed up for a personal trainer at Art Fitness. My first day there, I met the leader of the gym, Alisa Rose, and I do not know if she knows this, but she made one of the best decisions possibly ever made. She told me that she could be my trainer, but she thought I would do better with a different trainer at the gym, a younger guy named Byshi Watson. That is a decision that changed my life. The next day I started at Art Fitness, training with Byshi, and truthfully I gained an older brother that day. As time passed, my body began to change for the better, I started gaining confidence, liking what I was seeing in the mirror. The rest of senior year I found myself being the social person I wanted to be, and that is the person I always knew I was. Nothing was holding me back anymore. The best part was, training and working out was not something I was dreading. In the past, every time I tried to go the gym myself, I just hated it. It was not fun, I felt like I was doing everything wrong, the minutes dragged by. At Art Fitness, I looked forward to working out. Byshi challenged me in a lot of ways, I had never been so sore, and I do not wish those sprints in the parking lot on my worst enemy! Even with the challenge, I enjoyed it so much, because the whole time I was truly just hanging out with a great friend, a big brother. Whether we were talking about music, or how much we hate Kevin Durant and the Warriors, we were always just having a good time. Byshi is the best trainer I could have asked for. He wants you to reach your goals, and he shows you how to do everything you need to do. At college, I show some of my friends the exercises he showed me at the school gym. I learned so much from him. Not only did he help me improve my body through exercise, he taught me the right things to eat and drink on a daily basis. He gave a meal plan that made a huge difference for me and helped me lose weight. His knowledge of fitness and nutrition is something I could always count on, I felt like I could ask any question and get an informed answer. I have stayed training with Byshi, three years later, and even though it is on and off as I attend college in New York City, Byshi is still someone I can go to with any problem in my life at any time. I could never really thank Byshi and the people at Art Fitness enough, training here changed my whole life. It made me into the confident person I always wanted to be, the confident person I am today. I will be forever grateful for that.

The staff, teachers, and fellow parents were all lovely and created a warm, nurturing environment. We had been disappointed by our experience at another Bright Horizons in the DC area. That location had an excessive churn of staff, shady characters sometimes hanging out outside, and lax reporting of incidents like minor injuries. But I didn't realize how bad it was until we came here. This Concord Plaza facility feels secure--it's tucked away in a quiet part of an office park, and adults must put a code in to enter the building. The teachers are a mix of seasoned pros and newer ones, making it feel like there is a solid pipeline to train and retain talent. There is a big green space at the front where parents and kids often hang out to play and socialize after school, giving it a community vibe. Some logistics: if you're interested in taking a tour or getting on the wait list (a few months, was not unreasonable), contact the main number for the regional office. You may also be able to get info about the Bright Horizons at Nemours (I think longer wait list if you're not staff). My kids were very prepared for the next steps of their learning journeys after attending this Bright Horizons. I'm especially grateful for the care and communication from the teachers here.
