The Brasserie has that wow factor when you first walk in as the beautiful building is in stark contrast to the somewhat industrial surroundings, if a tad out of the way, and the connection with the art gallery gives it that added edge. The food was delicate, well presented and well cooked, however it didnt quite match the standard which had been set by The Black Door. I must say I loved the original Black Door, and the brasserie just doesnt quite stack up.
Starters were devine, the main however wasnt quite up to scratch. I ordered the duck and declined a side, I feel that the waitress should have informed me that the duck was served solo, and that a side was really necessary, rather than blankly following my clearly misinformed request without question. My duck, although beautifully cooked, would have benefited from an accompanying side dish, therefore the whole course was a let down. We declined desserts.
On the plus side, the atmosphere was pleasant, and while the restaurant was clearly busy, the staff remained attentive. It's certainly a league above many of the standard restaurants in Newcastle, however, in my mind anyhow, it doesnt quite fit the bill of "fine dining" in it's present form. read more
