The Brasserie du Royal is a restaurant in the recently renovated Royal Savoy hotel. The restaurant is a nicely decorated space, mixing modern touches such as the entrance hall with glass walls displaying wines and meats, and warm traditional touches.
We shared the goose foie gras appetizer, which came with Alsatian kougelhopf brioche and fruit chutney. The flavors and textures combined together very well, and the portion was definitely enough for two to share.
I ordered the farmer's pork chop, which was described as being garnished with bacon, mushrooms, potatoes, and onions. The presentation is impressive, as the chop is baked within a crust of dough and cut open to remove the chop for plating. The garnishes are in a separate serving pot and added to the plate. Unfortunately the dish looked better than it tasted, as the pork was dry and not very flavorful. The garnishes and sauce helped add some moisture and flavor, but were not quite as described on the menu, as there were apples and pears as well, and no mushrooms. This was still good, but I think the garnishes described on the menu would have been more my taste.
My friend had the papet Vaudois (pork and cabbage sausage, potatoes and leeks), which also had an elegant presentation in a serving pot with a crust of dough around the lid. I tried some, and it was really delicious, hearty food.
For dessert we shared the Bourbon vanilla custard "mille-feuille," which was delicious in every way.
Service at the restaurant is very friendly and professional. From the moment we walked into the hotel, the gentleman at reception welcomed us and walked us to the restaurant. Service throughout the meal was attentive, friendly and efficient.
I thought the menu prices were a decent value for Switzerland. Maybe the foie gras (30 CHF) and dessert (17 CHF) were on the pricey side, but there were a number of main course options for less than 40 CHF.
I look forward to going back to Brasserie du Royal given that most of what we tried was very good, and the ambiance and service were excellent; I would just order something different. read more
