Sometimes no planning yields the best experiences. Stuck one night by myself in Stuttgart, I wondered the mall near the train station looking for something good to to eat that was not Teutonic. After passing some mediocre looking Thai and Chinese places, I spotted the tiny entrance to the Calwer. Looked vaguely familiar. After sitting at the bar all of two minutes, major flashbacks to 1997 came up. Found the same place by accident in '97 while then too walking without Yelp direction with hunger pangs! Calwer then and now is unique in Germany - a brew on premises pub. What's a little disappointing though is the lack of of Mazen or something hoopy like a Jever. Yeah, I know about the micro-region styles of Germany. A pils, hefe, dunkle and that.s it. Previous visits here coincided with the cannstatter volksfest, so they usually had a rich Marzen on tap (that always had a faint sulfur aroma). The food - textbook Wurtemburgh ~ Swabian German. But they were out of Schwinhauxxen (not unusual for many haufbraus). Had the sauerbraten with spatzle instead - meat was tough, gravy was great, onions were not cooked enough. Big plus is they have a house made Schnapps made from beer. Its good. read more

I can't say that Swabian cuisine is my favorite, but this place does it up as good as any. I tried the mixed platter of Swabian delight (not the real name) and it was pretty good. You get the standard spaetzle but this version is with melted cheese sauce so it's exactly like Mac and Cheese! There's a slab of some mystery meat - the jury's still out on that delicacy. To round it all out you get the "meat ravioli" which is really just a greasy meatball wrapped in a soggy pasta tube. THEY DON'T SERVE APPLE STREUDEL HERE. This should be illegal in Germany. It's just not right. How can you call yourself a German establishment and not serve the national dish? Good beer though. And the crowd is really into their soccer. Waiters aren't too friendly, so don't expect epic service. When you have your fill try scoring a goal in the loo. read more

Excellent, typical German beer hall, with good, standard German food. Perfect ambiance for what it is. Take the stairs up into this restaurant and try and find an open place to sit down (seems it can be tough sometimes). Have the waiter bring your beer and order your spatzle or schnitzel, and take in a "football" game on their projector screen. The service was good and friendly and English-speaking, at first, but as we finished up our dinner, our waiter was nowhere to be found, and we had a tough time getting the attention of someone else so we could pay up and go. All in all, not too bad, but nothing spectacular to me. read more

After going to the Christmas market, we stopped by here for some light dinner and drinks. The place was crowded and very popular to the locals. They were serving huge pints of beer . The biggest I have ever seen which was like 2 liters. Fun crowd, great feel of typical German bar. I didn't eat so I cannot comment on food. Will have to come back here and provide reviews for food. They also brew their own beer. Beer is very cheap here. read more

Oh my goodness. If you're living in Stuttgart and looking for delicious Swabisch food, eat here. Not only is the käsespatzle some of my favorite in the city, but their bräumeister's beer is delicious as well. It's been a while since I've been able to eat there since I'm now living in the DC area, but I miss the food of Germany -- and Calwer-Eck Bräu was always a winner. The restaurant itself is on the 2nd floor, but the entrance is pretty prominent from the street. read more

Some people on Facebook had suggested checking this place out and to be honest I am disappointed in the recommendation. It's not so much that the food was bad - it was just okay. It's been pretty rare in the seven months we have lived in Stuttgart to have just an "okay" meal. My husband said the beer was okay, but not anything special. He had sausage which he said was good. I had the "weiner art" - schnitzel and fries. The fries were good but the schnitzel was dry and bland. My Riesling was nothing to write home about. With all the other restaurants in the area we will definitely not be back and I would not recommend this place to my friends. read more

Caler-Eck is so good. Anytime we have company in town we take them here. There beer is great. They have a platter "Fry-up Calwer-Eck" that has steak, sausages, leberkase (like a ham meatloaf), maultasche (kind-of like a ravioli), sauerkraut, and kasespatzle (like baked mac-n-cheese..amazing). This is a must get!! You can see a picture of this on Calwer-Eck website. You have to have a min. of two people to get this and there is a ton of food.... one of each piece of meat per person sharing it, so if 3 people share it than there are three pieces of each kind of meat. Needless to say, this is a great dish. The restaurant does get busy and you might want to make a reservation or come early (5:30 - 6ish). A lot of the tables will be reserved but if you tell them you will be done with dinner before the reserved time for that table they will let you seat there. read more

Tried their Sunday all-you-can-eat brunch and it actually was not good. The eggs were cold and kinda old, the dishes were empty, and the selection of food was not great. The place makes it so boring as there was no background music or anything, and there was only one person responsible for everything!! read more

Enjoyed dining at the bar with a work friend. The beer is great. The Appetizer for two with short ribs, cheddar poppers, fries, and wings isn't anything like the American counterpart. Really much better than you could get in the states. The sausages are all classic Bavarian style. The train stop is very near and makes it easy to get to even from out of the city. read more

We didn't have a reservation but didn't wait long for a table.. We ordered typical Swabian food including the meat ravioli whose name I've forgotten. This place is one of the best breweries (micro) in Stuttgart. Great beer, nice atmosphere. A good restaurant with great food.

First of all, let's say that this place is amazing!! I love going into Calwer Eck Brau as it's a perfect place to get that Lokal Brauerei atmosphere. Ever since the first time I went there with a group of college friends back in 2007, ever time I go to Stuttgart, I always make it a point to stop by this spot. It's really close to Konigstrasse if you're in the nearby area. The times I've been there I've had some of the best service that beats what I've gotten in the States. The prices are moderate, so you won't be wincing one you see the bill--I have to give them props for that. I would recommend starting off with one of their salads and having their Maultaschen. I must say they are pretty good with their Swabian cuisine and the Maultaschen being pretty good. Also the spatzle was very delicious according to my other family members who have gone there. They aren't stingy and you will leave filling full which is what we like. I'd definitely check this restaurant out if you're in that area as it's one of the best that I've been to. Like I said, when I go to Stuttgart, I always make it a point to stop by the brauerei. Highly Highly Recommend. read more

based on the reviews we set out to find this place. it's in an upscale pedestrian only walking zone. a little hard to find because it's upstairs and the signage is easy to miss. had flown in that day, so hadn't adjusted to local time and were hungry at 6pm. the place was already full! and clearly mostly locals-as I said, it's upstairs and not on a corner so it's not like it's easy for a lot of tourists to wander in. we were about to give up hunting for a table, when 2 people left at a small table by the kitchen. waiter spoke english, also had english menus. I'm still not converted that weiner schnitzel is a great dish-but it was certainly the best I've ever had. beer was super fresh and delicious. 26.90 euros for 2 people beer/dinner. read more
