Schnitzel with cheese sauce. I selected the Pilsner.

Food, Beer and service was great. Don't have good German food in Houston or in Chicago so this was a real treat. I had the schnitzel with a cheese sauce. I never had that before and figured I would give it a try. I really enjoyed it but I prefer some lemon and horseradish with my schnitzel.

This was a nice local place and the beer was outstanding and fresh. It just took so long for anyone to come to our table. I was so happy once I got the beer and then it took an incredibly long time for someone to take our order. Others that came in after us were being served before we even had a chance to order. I think it is because we were foreigners and English was an issue.Maybe we just looked weird and out of place. I guess I'll never know. Ultimately we were able to put our order in and the food arrived. The presentation was very nice and it also tasted pretty good. Very heavy on the belly, but hey, what do you expect for deep fried pork and potatoes, with bacon on top?

Seriously? When I…read morefirst came to Germany, I used to say: "If you want to have a good meal in Germany, eat German food-it's what they know how to cook." This place is making me rethink that adage. If you like meager portions and a lumpy sauce hollandaise during the Spargelzeit, then this is definitely the place for you. If you like to pay top dollar for Spätzle from a package, then, by all means go here. If you like really thick Schnitzel (it should be paper thin, people), then, don't think twice, patronize this restaurant right away. The decor is very folksy (just what one wants with a restaurant with home-cooking), but looks as though it has not been replaced since the seventies. The place does have a retro-feel, yes, but in a completely non-ironic way. And the prices! You can have a great meal in Darmstadt made by someone who actually knows what they're doing (serving a broken Hollandaise is pretty much unforgivable, imo) for about 30% less in many locales here. Boo!

I've eaten at the restaurant twice, and both times was very pleased! The menu is very typical of…read moreHessen and is translated into six languages. Restaurant service is prompt and courteous, and sitting in the bier garten is definitely the way to go, weather permitting. The hotel itself is quaint and can do with some more maintenance. I stayed for three nights and slept rather well, in spite of the jet lag and inexplicably huge pillows (but nicely pliable, so no biggie). The shower was tiny and rather uncomfortable to navigate, but it goes with the territory in many parts in Europe. Overall, I would recommend both the hotel and restaurant, give them a try!
