The Drink: The mocha was seriously lacking (2 1/2 stars for sure). I've have some solid af mocha game in my day and this kinda wasn't all that. Should I go back again -- and idk if I will because there's also Republic Coffee I wanna try -- I'd opt for testing out their espresso skills. Go with either a shot or a flat white my fellow yelpers and report back. Around the Area: Definitely come to this area though for ALL the charity (thrift) shops. Also, grab coffee here and snag a COUPLE cool and FREE postcards. Work Flow: It's for sure a workers coffee shop so don't feel bad for whipping out your papers + laptop and hunkering down. They also have a food game with some of those hipster buzz words *cough* I see you Pork Belly sandwich. This seems to be a thing for coffee shops in London (?) to also double as like solid lunch places as well... idk more investigation to come. I didn't study here today bc, well I was on a mission to see ALL of the charity shops of Archway/Highgate area; of which there are 7 in total -- that I found. Great quality coffee.. Seriosuly if you're in the area, you have to stop by. There's loads of seating and it's a really cosy place to spend a relaxing Sunday. I recently tried their Guinness cake and feel in love. Chocolate and alcohol, what is not to like!! Super yum and not badly priced at just of £3. *** If in a rush, Quick Review at the End**** This rating is a bit deceiving because in many respects it deserved 4 stars but with respect to price, serving size, and the varying flavor quality of the items in the full English...I'm obliged to reduce the star quality. To expound, "it's always best to start from the beginning"... From the street, Bread and Bean is an easy choice as it has smart curb appeal, an attractive menu (literally and food-wise), and evokes a confidence in the passing patron that eating here won't ruin one's day with indigestion...which cannot be said for other places in the area. Essentially, a trendy cafe one might find in Angel. Inside, the decor is a bit stark, bare white walls with the odd hanging image/art piece, A picture frame around a square of exposed brick, a few mismatched chairs and quite a lot of seating for a small-ish space...Nothing really pretentious or cliched but Nothing that really catches your eye either...Apart from the counter! The prominent counter is well stocked with cakes, treats (an array of nicely decorated, I'm assuming homemade, owl shape cookies) exactly what you want in a coffee shop. 4 people behind the counter, friendly absolutely, but not too concerned with acknowledging customers as they come in (mentioned in a previous review). I wasnt too sure on the process: Sit then order at the table/ or order then sit...I had to ask. In the end, You order first then sit down. Ordered a full English and a coffee, £9.35 total. Good coffee. When the food arrived I was a bit disappointed with the portion size...looked smaller than most full English I've had. Standard fried egg, Great bacon, bland beans mixed with something tomato, mushy grilled tomato, good sausage (though my friend wasn't a fan), half a field mushroom, polenta hash browns (really nice)' and 1 piece of sliced white bread... I felt a bit short-changed. And that was that really. Other menu items sounded good and were less money, so I'll give it another go...perhaps a bacon sarnie if the chance arises. I love this place. My husband and I have been looking for good bearkfast, and good coffee all over the world. And Here it is! Their breakfast is just real tasty. Especially their cooked vegetables, and pancake! I can feel their confident. The staff is also nice. On Weekends, we've visit here often from all the way. read more

This place was very busy when I was there on a Sunday morning. There's a nice atmosphere and the staff are really friendly. You're not supposed to customise meals (I think?) but the person who took my order let me do it anyway. I was slightly disappointed by the sourdough toast, as it seemed a bit tough. Also, if you're American, don't expect the pancakes to be exactly what you're used to (they still looked very good, but that's just what my American friend said). read more

A perfectly good coffee / tea shop in Archway basically opposite Costa. The main room is nice, however the back room has clearly not been finished and there are unpainted plasterboards on the ceiling. The concept lacks a bit of polish when you compare it to some of the newer places opening in the area. In terms of the tea, they have great infusion tea pots and their Earl Grey was good. Coffee wise I have only tried a flat white here and that too was up to scratch. They charged me 50p to use my card. read more

This is one of my favourite places to spend an afternoon, and certainly my favourite in the Archway/Tufnell Park area. If you can get a table, it's perfect - you can feel free to stay as long as you like. It does, however, get pretty crowded on the weekends for brunch! It's definitely a family friendly place, so if you're not okay with nursing your coffee with young kids around, I'd suggest going elsewhere. The coffee (I think) is pretty great, the tea is delicious (they use TeaPigs brand, I believe), and the hot chocolate is not overly sweet. I sometimes think they fall short on the food - most of what I've tried is delicious, but some things fall flat. Sadly, the scone and clotted cream isn't great. But the porridge is incredibly good, as are the Power Breakfast Cookies. Omelettes are okay. Overall, the staff is friendly and helpful, and happy to provide the free Wi-Fi. I wish it was in a bigger location so there are more seats (there are a few tables downstairs, but it's so cold down there!), but that might take away from the atmosphere. TIP: They do have a stamp card, which gives you one free coffee drink after you buy ten, but you need to specifically ask for it. The baristas never offer it, nor do they ask if you have one. read more

Discovered this popular place is a somewhat discreet part of North London. My friend has the Breakfast of Champions. A full fry up with butterflied sausage, a perfect egg and homemade baked beans. I was craving the Transatlantic breakfast which was pancakes and bacon. Added a side of scrambled eggs. The service was very friendly, food served quick and all tasted fresh so big thumbs up from me. Lattes were good too! This part of Archway definitely needs more of this type. read more

I thought this place was super-cute and an wood-decor'd island in a fairly rough area. The seating was comfy, staff were nice and the food was good. I had fresh OJ and the asparagus dish and it was tasty - but the portion was fairly small. I've walked past Bread & Bean so many times but some how this was only my first visit. It is a lovely place with a cool clean interior, a relaxed quiet island in the so-so frenzy of Archway. I had a pot of green tea and slice of carrot cake, both excellent. Here I could easily wile away many more hours in long conversations with good friends, or with a good book. read more

This place is great for trendy Archway residents to relax surrounded by hipsterish surroundings. So, it comforts me, my mac, my long blacks and pretensions...less so my grandmother. Such a great addition to Archway. This lovely cafe is far better than anything nearby and run by lovely people. The coffee rivals some of the best independents in central London plus free wifi and daily papers makes it difficult to consider anywhere else. The menu is good, the bacon sarnie is immense, although as a regular, a change to the food offering once in a while would be great. read more

I so have to agree with Uli B; tried this place again today for the second time, hoping there may have been a warmer welcome...well, even an acknowledgement would do. But no. When I arrived, there were two customers having coffee, so not exactly flat out, and two staff members. I said good morning directly to them both and there was no, and I mean NO response, acknowledgement, nothing. I then sat down at a table, assuming someone would provide me with a menu board; but no...nothing. The girl working there went out for a cigarette, the man busied himself with a delivery of milk and still, I sat...nothing, not a thing. So, I got up and left...which was pretty obvious considering I was only the third 'potential' customer in there. And still, nothing...not a thing. I also so wanted to love an independent cafe in Archway but until these people sort themselves out and provide some sort - any sort! - of customer service I won't be back ... and neither will the many friends I have in the area because I will be sure to tell them of my experiences. read more
