One of the many nice cafes tucked away in Bloomsbury. I love stopping here for a quick snack after class. They have a selection of salads fresh everyday and pastries. My favorite are the blondies - chewy, crumbly, and not too sweet if paired with a black coffee. The first time I stumbled upon this cafe, it was admitted the color mosaic stair fronts along many doorways on Tavistock Street that caught my eye. Bloomsbury Coffee House is actually downstairs, below street level. There is probably two tables in the outdoor downstairs. There is more seating indoors that spans two rooms. I came here on a Sunday morning, about 8:30 am. The place was about 40% full at that time. My first impression was that the cafe was small and the low ceiling made it appear even smaller. I read reviews noting that the place was cozy, but with the more crowded it got, the more stuffy it felt. The menu was different than what I found in reviews. I think recently they must of changed their prices because everything was £1-£2 more than the image I found. Anyways, I ordered Eggs and Toast (which includes an overly salty bacon) and an Americano for £11. The food didn't take too long to come out but for what I got, and in the lack of presentation I felt the dish was a bit over priced. I do think the servers were nice and location easy to get to, unfortunately I wouldn't come here again or recommend it. read more

Hey Bloomsbury Coffee as soon as I walked by it was love at first sight. Then I saw the words 'Chilli Chai Latte' and the rest is history. Cute little place that you'd blink and miss it. Discreet entrance due to fact you have to go down a little stairs. Front room is airy and light though I moved to back where it was much more packed sitting. A lot of students possibly because of nearby uni students. Lot of people eating too so might be quite cheap but didn't check. Seems to be an in the know popular place as it kept getting more crowded and this was random time during the day. Overall it's a cute little place to spend time in with good quick wi Fi with a good coffee. Nice atmosphere inside too. read more

Cute little place. So much zen. Namastay here all day! Quiet cosy basement cafe with a good selection of cakes and savouries. Perfect for someone who's looking for small nibbles and drinks. They do have a variety of fresh sandwiches available from 11am - 3pm, ranging from smoked salmon, grilled Haloumi, chicken and honey roasted ham. There are vegetarian options such as tarts, quiches and salads. Decent prices!! Could get a meal with drinks below £10 here, rare in London. Outdoor seating is limited, fits 3 couples max (tables of 2). The inside is a wider, and could fit more but it's definitely not a place for big groups or anything more than 3. Seems more like a takeaway kind of place... If you manage to get a seat outside that would be perfect! Especially when the weather is nice and sunny. You do get a bit of noise from the cars driving pass and from pedestrians. If you'd like to get some work done it would be best to be seated inside, though I found it a little hot and humid. read more

All during my trip throughout the United Kingdom, my lady and I stayed in guest houses that included breakfast. And, of course, most of them were the Full English kind (made vegetarian). None of these homemade breakfasts made with love (or at least putting up with tourists) came even close to the one I had the first day off the plane at this coffee shop. Located in the middle of a row of hotels and hostels in a basement a slight walk from the British Library, this place is a treat. There are two comfortable rooms of varying side bar stools and tables with cafe service. We were able to sit and drink lots of English Breakfast tea with (lots of) sugar in an attempt to get over jet lag. They provide the adorable little tea service that many other coffee shops do in an atmosphere conducive to studying or chatting or pretty much anything but sleeping. The prices are wonderful for the giant portions they offer on their Full English. The 6.95 we paid for food made it possible to completely skip lunch. I would have loved another veggie sausage since they was delicious (I actually got an extra one because I requested no mushrooms and they will make substitutions) but it's not like my stomach needed it. My lady could not even finish her delicious halloumi cheese sandwich. While I will probably not have a chance to frequent this place ever again, I can't recommend it to locals looking for breakfast and tea enough. read more

First of all, this coffee shop provided me with the best croissant I've had in all of England - it was soft and chewy on the inside but crisp and flaky on the outside. It set my day off to a perfect start. The coffee was also good. The vibe of the cafe is pretty chill - many guests coming in and out throughout the day. The wi-fi is fast, and the employees do not seem to mind you sitting for a while to get some work done. Around lunchtime, there is a wide variety of quiches and sandwiches available as well, and there are several vegetable mixes that looked extremely appetizing though I did not have a chance to try them. It's really close to UCL and SOAS, making it super convenient for college students. Will definitely be back. read more

I didn't actually buy anything here but followed a friend. The interior is quite small but feels cozy. There are both drink and food (lunch/brunch style) menu. As a non-British, it kind of felt like this would be one of the places where you can taste and experience typical "British" style food, tea drinks, and ambience. Located inside a basement and close to Russel Square, this coffee house delivers. Atmosphere is relaxed and food is good, prices are fair. Plenty of power outlets for laptops as well as tables. Also many books to read while you enjoy your drink. It is not as fashionable as other than similar places and thatis what actually makes it good, you can really can concentrate here. £2 for a bottomless cup of filter coffee. It's just like being back in the States, score. And for this reason, I am currently unable to comment on the quality of their espresso drinks, perhaps I will eventually be persuaded to deter from this novel (for London) treat. Breakfast was delicious. I would say a little bit pricey for the portion size but certainly tasty. The porridge had the apposite texture (indicative of proper overnight oat-soaking), the potato cakes which accompanied the scrambled eggs were more akin to pancakes in texture and appearance but still enjoyable. Not much seating space inside as the place is tiny, but if you do grab a spot it certainly feels cosy being sunken from street level. It's actually the breakfast cafe of the hotel above but it nicely maintains an independent cafe atmosphere. read more

This was my local coffee stop when I stayed on this street recently and it was a big highlight of the trip. Got a takeaway one morning (where I learned that a 'roll and bacon' doesn't exist) and a lovely sit-in job another. My 'bacon butty' was three slices of toasted bread (white and brown) cut into triangles in a box. At least four slices of thick bacon in there. Proper sorted me out! Cooked breakfast sitting in was also excellent, and good value for money. A nice clean sleek interior with funky decorations and books will make you feel right at home. I'm really sorry, I'm really sorry, I think I just have the February grumps? I'm just feelin' 3 stars here. And I gave it two go-s! I like the Bloomsbury Coffee House, but people had _really_ hyped up its appeal. I went mid-afternoon on a weekday to do some work, and it was pretty busy given the fact that it was surprisingly (mainly) hidden from street view (it's down a flight of stairs and below street level). A lot of students, which makes sense given the location. It has a great buzz, though I guess "great" depends on what kind of work you're hoping to tackle (FINAL STAGES OF THESIS YOU SAY? CUE CATHY COMIC-STYLE: GACK GACK GACK!!!). I like the look of a lot of things on offer: bircher muesli. Quinoa salad. Plenty of veggie-friendly options in the form of quiches. But I've never stuck around. I've been in twice; both for takeaway. Once for a chai latte and a brownie; the other time for a slice that was chock-a-block full (unexpectedly) of marshmallows. It's cute, it's warm, I (in my limited time in the space given the takeaway) had friendly service...it just...was kinda meh. Both baked goods were fine, but overly sweet for my taste and nothing truly righteous. And I appreciate the range of hot drinks on their menus (a great place to bring someone who isn't a coffee lover; teas and tea lattes and hot chocolates), but the chai latte wasn't my fave. I think part of my feelings for Bloomsbury Coffee House is unfortunately coloured by my love of other coffee-and-cake options right around the Judd Street / Tavistock Place intersection. So if it were stand-alone? Maybe you'd get 3.5 stars. I just feel like there are tastier, more affordable on-point-ier options just around the corner (I feel like it's bad manners to point 'em out, but if you read my reviews they ain't tough to identify). English breakfast was pretty cheap and filling. I'll be honest and say there wasn't anything too special about it-most people could probably cook a similar meal at home. But I guess the appeal is that it tastes home cooked :) the other thing that was a little annoying is they don't let you choose what tea or coffee drink to come along with the full English breakfast...they charge you extra for anything besides English breakfast tea or regular coffee. Overall a good cafe: good food, good drinks, good atmosphere, and they even have wifi! read more

I was in the area and looking for a place to grab a quick lunch before heading over to the British Library, and after searching through Yelp, I decided to make a detour and head to this little coffee house. It was cold & dreary, but I am very glad I made my way there! For a small coffee house, they have quite the sandwich/lunch selection, and after a few minutes, I went with a latte and a pesto, avocado sandwich. The latte was delicious, and the sandwich was easily the best of its kind that I have ever had, which is quite the compliment from a strict carnivore! Yet another lovely little coffee shop nestled in the Bloomsbury area. Be sure to look for the sign, because the shop is actually downstairs. The inside is so cozy and warm, with a huge display of all sorts of delicious food: sandwiches, salads, quiches, pastries, etc. I went for a sandwich that came with chicken, mozzarella, tomato, and pesto. It came on some kind of dark multigrain bread, and was delicious. I also had a latte, which was great as well. Their cinnamon roll is also to die for. Its a great spot to sit and read or get some work done, but does tend to be busy. The staff is very friendly and great at what they do. STUDENTS: DON'T TRY TO STUDY HERE ON A WEEKDAY. This was my first time at Bloomsbury Coffee House and I am SO disappointed with the service. After so many fellow university students telling me what a great place it was to study and do work, I decided to give it a try. I am a student on a budget, and once in a while will treat myself to a nice coffee or tea to help me focus while I work. After buying my drink, I sat down and pulled out my laptop to get started. Almost instantly an employee rushed over and very rudely informed me of the new policy that no laptops were allowed between 12 and 2 PM "to make space for people who wanted to eat lunch." I really needed to do work on a laptop, though, so I moved into the back room where I had seen multiple people on laptops, reading books, taking notes, etc. The employee followed me in a few minutes later and in a very angry tone told me I was not allowed to "take up space from people eating lunch." Worst of all, she forced everyone else with laptops to put them away, but there was a girl right next to me doing readings on a tablet who was not reprimanded. Another girl, at the end of the table, wasn't even eating or drinking anything but had a pack of about 20 markers out and was coloring, but she, along with the writers, readers, and people endlessly browsing the internet on their phones, were not reprimanded either. And yet all of them were "taking up space" from lunch customers for an extended period of time. As a paying customer, and someone who would have frequented this place all the time for its excellent drinks, I feel so disrespected and disappointed. As an establishment that markets itself as a student hangout and a comfortable place to work, Bloomsbury Coffee house needs to try living up to its image and name. If they are planning on becoming a restaurant/work-free zone, then perhaps they should not call themselves a Coffee House anymore. Students need to work between classes, and often that happens to fall during typical lunchtime. Students gave this coffee shop the incredible following and word of mouth that it still capitalizes on, yet our needs are being ignored. Where will you draw the line about who takes up space? What about the couple behind me talking all through lunch hours after ordering a single drink? What about someone reading a book? Perhaps make an across-the-board rule about buying lunch if you want to do work. Or reserve a certain number of tables each day at this time for diners only. But profiling only the students on laptops? Completely unfair and just bad management. Unfortunately, I will not be coming back to this cozy location with great drinks as clearly my patronage isn't valued here :( So disappointed I made a yelp account just to write this review! read more

Nice friendly cafe with good food and juices. The haloumi falafel warm sandwich was flavorful and just big enough. A side green salad and a carrot ginger juice helped take the edge off jet lag without shocking the system. And the price was very reasonable and the free WiFi let me map my way to the British Library. read more

Went here recently hungry and tired from walking straight from St Pancras- so glad I stumbled in here! Had a coffee with cream and an egg/bacon/cheese muffin sandwich. I actually wanted to move to London after eating in this coffee shop in May 2017. I'm back. I found out immediately that my favorite pastry chef is on maternity leave. Key: come after 11:30 to eat all the amazing salads and veggie items. The breakfast is just ho-hum. But the salads, the quiches, the baked goods that the pastry chef used to make, these were delicious. I hope she comes back!!!! The coffee, with whole organic milk, also is worth coming back for. While I was writing this review, a wonderful staff member saw that I did not like my breakfast and came and REPLACED it with the very salads that I was longing to try. So I think the staff alone have led me to give a full five star review. While I'm writing this a little message that says that my review is making the "yelposphere" a better place. I do respect yelp's commitment to an objective viewpoint and that is why I usually turn to yelp when I'm looking for a place to eat or drink in a strange city. read more

Bloomsbury Coffee House, how I miss thee! This cozy coffee shop serves up incredibly fresh food, and baked treats, and also smoothies! They make lunch as well but we never got to try their sandwiches as our study abroad group of students was out of the area early morning. The staff at BCH accommodated our large group for almost a full week and allowed us to reserve their back room larger tables for our group of college students. Daily porridge and an Americano for me got the day off right. The staff is incredibly friendly, the food fresh, the ambiance is perfection... and they have free wifi for the internet junkies out there! Preh.cious. Needed to meet a friend around Russell Square and this came up for an option that was open on a Saturday afternoon. I got there, thinking it was closed, only to realise that the entrance is actually on the basement level and had to go down some stairs first! Lovely homely atmosphere and I ordered a chilli chai latte that wasn't too strong on the chilli, but quite delicious. Stayed for about an hour and a half, but feel like this place would be great to do some remote working in as well. read more

I have a thing for basement cafes and become addicted to them as I have been to a lot in London. The coffee was actually good. I just had a coffee while I read the London Standard.
