Small spot, welcoming environment with a very friendly owner. The decor/layout felt like I was in someone's home. Tried a ham and cheese croissant, bread and chocolate pastry, and an apple tart. The croissant was a little doughy, the pastry was ok, and the tart was a disappointment. Unfortunately, I didn't try any of the good looking loaves of bread. This place is simply amazing! Definitely unassuming exterior conceals the sheer quality of the baked goods produced here. We call ahead after opening to ensure we can get our treasured raspberry croissants and chocolate/raspberry cakes from our 2 hour round trip! Definitely worth it. Never again I ordered a cake a week and a half ago. I called today to verify the order for an event that was 3 days away and was blown away. The gentleman on the phone at first told me he couldn't do the order as I didn't give him enough time. I told him I had talked to him the week before and then I heard him going through some papers and he said "Oh yes, I found it. I can't do it this week. What was your plan B?" I love this place. I was given a birthday cake from here six years ago and it was the best one I have ever had. I ended up getting a job a couple of blocks away from there and oh boy....I went to this place often. So glad I am now 45 minutes away because my wallet just couldn't take it anymore. I've visited three times in the past 6 months for cakes (same day pick up) for office parties. Today I stopped in for a cake for my husband's birthday. The owner helped me, and he usually does. A man of few words, but pleasant enough. His pastries and cakes are simply divine. Reminds me of old world pastry shops in Belgium or France. Always executed perfectly. i stopped in to get a delicious treat several weeks ago; their 6-grain bread. It almost changed my life! Because of the bad weather, stopped in again today and got the Potato Bread. I wasn't paying attention until I got home and took it out of the paper bag. Burnt. I had to take a super sharp bread knife to all of the outside edges which were like cardboard to find something edible inside as bread. Very disappointed. Sorry! It was oatmeal bread. Slowest service ever!!!!! I've been 2nd in line for 15 minutes. The one girl working the shop has been on the phone taking an order the whole time. I gave up after the phone rang again 20 minutes into our wait and she took that instead of helping all the customers in the shop. They should probably learn to help a few customers actually in the shop trying to give them money instead of ignoring us repeatedly to take inquiries on the phone. I won't ever be back. read more

I purchased a cake for the holidays at the start of December for pickup right around Christmas time. Unfortunately, the baker got sick (what they told me on the message that was left) and they canceled all orders the Monday before the holiday (holiday was Saturday, but the pickup date was Thursday). By the time I could call them back after receiving the message (which was about 2:15 in the afternoon), they were closed until further notice. I left an upset message. Fast forward, in late February it occurred to me that I'd never heard back after the holidays (it was holiday time and by the time the New Year rolled around there was a lot going on with getting back to work after a break) and I checked to see if there was reimbursement for my cake and there was not. I called to ask for it and the man who talked to me was short with me, kept cutting me off, and told be I had to come in to get the reimbursement. I told him no, that's they took my money over the phone, they could return it the same way (I live about 1.5 hours from the place...not somewhere I can get to easily). I was also upset with how he was treating me so I told the man it was bad business to not reimburse people when you never provided a product. He twisted my words and said it was not bad business to get sick. I've never been treated so rudely. I understood that the baker was sick, but this company didn't return my call (and I did leave a voicemail with my number) nor did they automatically reimburse me for something they never provided upon reopening. And to top it off, the man was extremely rude when I was asking for a reimbursement. I cannot speak to the quality of the food (which is probably amazing), but the quality of customer service and general human politeness is terrible. read more

I really wanted to like this place. I mean, who doesn't love a name like Bread & Chocolate? But, the croissant I got was dry -- just one step up from name-a-grocery-store. Nothing like Fiore's in Jamaica Plain, MA! They have spoiled me! I can't speak for the glory of their cakes, as I did not try them, but I did sample their cream cheese brownie which I got for my girlfriend, and we shared it. About it, she says, "I didn't think it was that flavorful. It was mediocre: it tasted homemade, but if it's not good homemade, then just being homemade isn't enough." They have many types of sandwiches, wrapped in white paper (I love that), such as ham & cheese, mozzarella, basil, & tomato, & turkey, and they're nicely-priced (between $5.50 and $6.50, or so). There's a nice a area to sit (un-airconditioned, which was fine for me), and quiet, which is good for studying. The service was fabulous (hence the 3 stars). The one female server was courteous, efficient, and friendly: really sweet. As I sat there with my okay coffee and not-so-good croissant, I noticed that no matter how long the line became, she was sweet as sugar. But, Bread & Chocolate - in terms of the bakery items -- just doesn't live up to its name! read more

Im always in search for a good bakery in this state. My mother-in-law took to lunch at Bread and Chocolate and I can honestly say, I have found a gem. My son got a ham and cheese sandwhich, MIL got the tuna and I got the fresh mozzarella and tomato with basil. All were served on Ciabatta bread. We all loved them - even though they were premade. We got a few desserts as well: a mini fruit tart, a mini Opera cake and a mini lemon cake. All were delish. Glad to see a bakery in NH doing the mini's, as Im used to the huge Italian ones in NY that have 3 glass cases full of them (Oh how I miss Ferrara's in Little Italy!) Next dinner party I throw, Im taking the trip to Concord to snatch up a box of mini's, for sure. Oh and they had a ton of different croissants with so many different fillings, I plan on trying a few of those as well! read more

What a humble little bakery. Perhaps Concord's best place to go for a treat. Don't let the outdated interior fool you. The tastes at this bakery are timeless. These are no grocery store cakes. These cake's flavors and decor are assembled with expertise and great skill. I've never had a more satisfying piece of cake. The flavors are not overrun with sugar. Each flavor within the cake is perfectly highlighted and balanced. The kind of cake you enjoy slowly with a nice cup of coffee. The other pastries are just as delicious. Most unpleasant person I've ever met. There was a great lack of communication, and what exactly I would be doing there. In the back room, out of the customers view, there were countless bags of flour and other ingredients left completely open. There were ants visibly crawling around on the floor. When we "washed" the dishes, there was no soap provided. We simply scrubbed the equipment with a sponge. Please, for your own health, do NOT eat here.
