We went on the Darkside of Brewing walking tour led by Jack on a Saturday evening and had a great time! Jack was a very knowledgeable guide and had some fun stories for us. The tour was 2 hours long and wasn't a very intense walk. We did go up a steep street but the views of the city were nice and we didn't go too far. We recently took the Brewing & Distilling Tasting Tour and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our tour guide (I don't recall his name) is a history major, so was very knowledgable about Cincinnati history, not limited to just brewing & distilling. It was a cold day with a little rain, so this particular tour was nice since it's mostly indoors. We started at Northern Row for a little tour of their distillery and then some spirits tasting. I appreciate that our tour guide offered a beer instead of the spirits for those of us who preferred that. We then got to go in the historic lagering tunnels before finishing our tour behind the scenes at Rhinegeist. The tour concluded with a flight of Rhinegeist beers. At over 2.5 hours, I felt like the tour was too long, but I imagine those really interested in brewing and/or history would think the length was fine. read more

Great tour. I've done multiple Cincinnati lagering tunnel tours, and one of the nice things about this one is that there are no stairs, so although the terrain is uneven, it can be managed by most if they're careful where they're walking. We started this tour nearly fifteen minutes late because one of the groups had multiple members who had gone inside the market house to look around and simply didn't bother to appear on time. It was really frustrating to have to stand around in the sun waiting for rude people to show up. I know it's a difficult situation for the tour operator, so I'm not taking a star off, but honestly events should start on time. If rude people are late, that should be their problem. Waiting for them rewards them and punishes those who show up on time. read more

Lisa was extremely knowledgeable and paced our tour with interesting Cincinnati history including tales of grave robbing, serial killing, and other dark events. Interesting tour and our tour guide, Jacob, was knowledgeable. I guess I was expecting something a little different. The Brewers & Barons tour we took was in a sketchy part of town. We stopped at some old, abandoned breweries and bottling companies and were told some history about them. We got to walk through the tunnel that goes under the street, but couldn't go up on the other side because it's now private residence. If you get a chance to go on this tour, you should definitely do it. Even if you are not a beer fan, the information and places are super neato! The tour starts off with a lot of information as you walk from the Moerlein towards an old building (An old building in OTR - whaaat!!??) that used to be a beer hold station (or at least that's what I'll call it since I can't remember the name). You learn a lot about the beer process, it's relation to the canal, the plethora of breweries that were in the area, and even some about architecture (that was one of my favorite parts). :) The second part of the tour is spent in the aforementioned "beer holding station" - it's a building with an elaborate tunnel underneath to house the beer at a certain temperature, and then cart it off to a brothel...just kidding. They would take it to a salon or to the canal to be shipped off...some as far as South America!! You'll learn that and some other fun facts about the beer culture when you go on this tour!! read more

How COOL! What a wonderful way to spend a beautiful afternoon. This walking tour in OTR will pack your brain full of history and interesting facts. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable and easy to get along with. The coolest part (obviously) is getting to go down into an old brew house and get a feel for the working conditions in the cellars. You finish the tour with tasting some Christian Morelein beers - lager, ale, and IPA. I really enjoyed this tour and would definitely do one of their others. read more

This place is great! Our guide was very knowledgeable about the brew history of Cincinnati and answered all of our questions. You could tell he really enjoyed what he was doing! My father and I weren't that familiar with the area so he also provided great recommendations of where to eat and visit. Presented by the OTR Brewery District, the Prohibition Resistance Tour takes guests on journey back to when Cincinnati was 6th most prosperous city in America, and Over-The-Rhine was the second densest populated area, next to New York City. The tour begins at Findlay Market, and showcases Cincinnati's German influence and rich brewing history. We viewed the old Christian Moerlein brewery, which encompasses two city blocks. Original Italianate architecture is pointed out along the way, as well as locations of late 1800s dance halls, churches and pubs. My favorite part was venturing into the Felsenbrau and Jackson breweries. They are clearly visible from Central Parkway, but being abandoned and greatly deteriorated, tours are rarely offered of these two structures. A climb to the top level of Felsenbrau offers a gorgeous view of Over The Rhine, as well as details from the brewery's heyday. The roof is wooden and peaked, and all the banisters have beer keg shaped endcaps. Next, we ventured underground into the lagering cellars of the Jackson Brewery; Cincinnati's infamous tunnel system for transporting, chilling and storing beer. Many of the details are still present, such as old gas-powered electrical systems and ramps used to move the kegs. I was fascinated by the sights of the tour, but the guides needed some improvement. They were informed, but were reading from a lengthy packet and tended to ramble and lose the audience's attention. I would have preferred if they just memorized a few facts about each stop. Also, it was difficult to hear them inside of the buildings because all the guests were looking around in the different rooms. It would be helpful to gather everyone, tell the story, then have people disperse to explore the room and take pictures. A portable microphone system would be beneficial as well. The tour was also slated to be between 90 minutes and 2 hours. It actually ended up being 3 hours long; our group was a bit restless (and hungry) since it ran late. It was only a 12 block walk roundtrip. Recommendations for guests: - DO NOT wear flip flops or new shoes. You will be walking off the beaten path, down a steep slope, and through wet dirt in the lagering cellar. - Look out for poison ivy when entering Felsenbrau, and near the lagering cellar. - You should bring a bottle of water, a granola bar (or small snack), sunglasses, and a camera. Lots of cool things to take photos of. - Take the tour on a day where you don't have plans afterwards if it runs late. Also, it was 83º, which was an enjoyable temperature for a walking tour. I would advise rescheduling if it is any hotter. Overall, the Prohibition Resistance Tour was a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon learning about Cincinnati's German heyday. Also, a portion of your ticket price is donated to the upkeep of Cincinnati's historic breweries. read more

Paige's review perfectly sums up all that there is to see on this tour, so I will not repeat that part. The tour was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon with beautiful weather. I liked that the tour started at Findlay Market, giving me an excuse to buy a popsicle. Parking was quite difficult to find so make sure to arrive early. Because the tours are very popular, it is a good idea to make a reservation/buy tickets in advance (check their website for details). I was on the same tour as Paige so I have a similar opinion of the tour guides. They were very nice and open to questions, but read from a packet for a majority of the tour. I have never been on a tour before where the guides read from a packet. It was also often difficult to hear the guides, especially when cars drove by. Maybe they could get microphones or something similar? My favorite parts of the tour were the unexpected events, such as when someone drove by and yelled "don't go in, it's haunted!" as we were about to enter an abandoned brewery. I also liked when an OTR resident came by and sang for the group. The tour guides did not seem too happy about these events, but I thought it added charm to the experience. The tour ran WAY over the allotted time so make sure that you don't have any plans immediately after and bring some water to drink along the way. I greatly enjoyed this tour and would recommend it to others, just make sure to follow Paige's recommendations! read more

The Cincinnati tours are always a lot of fun. Start at Findlay Market and walk through OTR to the old breweries. The tour guide starts by telling you all about the history of OTR and how important Cincinnati was in the mid 1800's to the early 1900's. How the German heritage played in making Cincinnati what it is today. The history of the city is amazing in how important it was on so many levels. This tour told of the importance of the city in the beer world. The city was the center for beer in the nation at the time long since gone. After walking a few blocks you are taken in the first brewery. Taken up old steep stairs to the top floor to be shown how beer was made before there was electricity. The old breweries used gravity to keep everything going. After that we are were taken to the old Jackson brewery and 30 feet under ground in the beer cellars. It felt so good going from the outside 90 degrees to 50 degrees underground. At the end of the tour back to Findlay Market to your free beer in the beer garden. It was a great way to end the tour. read more

The Cellerman's Tour was very informative. A lot of interesting history of Cincinnati, even if you're not into beer, although even better if you are. The tour consisted of a walk through of a few blocks of OTR with a discussion of the various buildings of significance and stories behind them. Ended with a walk through an underground lager cellar-very cool-then a few samples at Moerlein. Although it was a little awkward drinking from plastic cups instead of standard glasses you'd expect at a beer tasting. The delivery could be better. It did appeared this was either a new tour or rewritten script, so maybe just a few kinks that need to be worked through. read more

We did the 12:30pm CELLARMEN'S 90 minute walking tour. Several times we had to walk on garbage thru the streets of OTR. Garbage is all over the sidewalks and streets of OTR. Throughout the OTR tour you will walk by groups of people hanging outside that appear to be selling drugs. I know people say OTR is getting better, or up and coming, or talk about what it will be some day; but on this day it was 100% a dump. There has to be better ways to spend $25 / person and 90 minutes on a Saturday. read more

I am always searching for deals for date day with the hubby; found this tour on Groupon and knew he would love it. We have only toured one other local brewery, which was Rivertown so I guess I was expecting more of the same thing. This tour was nothing like I had in mind!! We arrived early so we so we walked around the facility and then hit the tap room. I'm personally not a beer drinker (but like I said, bought this as a gift for my hubby) so I was surprised to see they offered wine. Hubby's beer was $6; I guess that's high? Then again, we're not exactly urbanistas so we wouldn't know. High priced or not, he said it was fantastic. We ordered the sausage tray. Actually, that too was pretty dynamite. You pick three meats; it comes with rye bread and cheese and three gourmet mustards. Very german; very Cincinnati. The tour did not begin right at 3pm as scheduled but shortly after. This turned out to be a walking tour of OTR and the history lesson was amazing! Being a suburban girl, it did feel a bit odd to be in a large walking group in OTR but hey, something different. My grandfather worked in two Cincinnati brewerys many many years ago so the history meant something special to me. I have to ask though, is there a huge demand for authentic German clothes- enough to have a gift shop selling nothing but? read more

Underwhelming tour. A walk around the block to hear a a half hour talk and a walk into one building and wait again for four people at a time on group of over 60 to look down a cellar. Over an hour standing around of total 1 1/2 hour tour. Learned next nothing. Would recommend other downtown tours but not this one. read more
