Brezel Benno (on the corner of Zeil and Liebfrauenstraße - next to the Esprit Store and roughly opposite the Kaufhof department store) is a baker's stand that succeeds to unite quality with attitude.
Under the the green-and-white-striped canopy you find its incomparable advertising slogan
Was in Japan ist der Tenno
ist für Frankfurt Brezel Benno
which roughly translates as
In Japan you find the tenno
In Frankfurt you find Brezel Benno
Admittedly, there are link between the Japanese emperor and a Frankfurt Brezel stand is somewhat tenuous, but then their Brezels are definitely fit for a king (if not an emperor) and beat those "freshly baked" Brezels you find at most stands (i.e. deep-freeze Brezels that can still be half-raw in the middle and are a pityful sight half an hour after you bought them) by miles.
You're looking for something slightly different? Try their Kümmelstange (a long-ish light bread roll garnished with salt and caraway seeds), or their diffent types of Laugengebäck (dark bread roll that owe their deep brown colour to a dip in caustic soda before baking which also adds a certain piquant note - and is not as dangerous as it sounds :) with bacon or cheese.
You are looking for something sweet? Even better - the selection is somewhat smaller, but they do offer a Frankfurt speciality: Hattekuche, a rombus-shaped cake that tastes a bit (but only a bit) like gingerbread - best to try it yourself. read more
