Recently - after a long bike ride, I had an elevated heart rate that would not come down. Was told I had atrial flutter. The ER at Hoag had to shock it back into rhythm. Stayed in rhythm for a week and came back. I did follow up with the ER Dr (was fine) however his specialist referral was off putting to say the least. As I researched my insurance and the Hoag network, came across Dr Chesnie. Was impressed by many things in his bio. Sent a message online and left a VM explaining. This is the incredible part, his wife Vicky got me in immediately the next day, after meeting Dr Chesnie he personally contacted his preferred electro physicist " after I left that same day" as I needed a cardiac ablation. I scheduled my appointment , he was beyond fantastic as well; and scheduled my procedure straight away 2 days later. That has now been completed. HR back in rhythm. Care I received was beyond excellent at Hoag. The level of care and service by Dr Chesnie was next level, in fact unheard of. I rarely write reviews but felt it was appropriate and respectful to note my experiences with Dr Chesnie and his staff. I think it was 7 or 8 years a go when I initially had an appointment with Dr Chesnie, purely as part of a physical. At this time, I felt relaxed and was never rushed during my visit and he answered all my questions and fully explained the procedures and results. As everything checked out, I didn't give it much thought until a few months ago when I was not feeling "right" and was worried about some shortness of breath and occasional pain. When looking through my health plan I saw Dr Chesnie listed and had no reservations about booking an appointment. Again, I found the office environment relaxed and friendly. Dr Chesnie took the time to listen to my issues and checked me out and ordered a blood test and a follow up with the results along with a treadmill stress test. The appointments were easy, follow up from the office was excellent with them calling me for a cancelation as I had told them I am open to an earlier date if one is available. The appointments were as before, calm, thoughtful and with caring explanations without ever feeling like a business and rushed. Wouldn't recommend any other cardiologist, and I saw a few others before seeing Dr. Chesnie. His resume, training, and experience are impressive. His knowledge, compassion, and care got me through a very difficult period after being diagnosed with AF. The practice is similar to that of a concierge doctor's office. My first encounter with Dr Chesnie was in April of 2012. I was living on the East Coast at the time and ended up in Hoag hospital after a cardiac event while attending a dinner in Newport Beach. After every test available, non of the cardiac specialists could figure out the problem. Dr Chesnie was the last in the room and said "My colleagues wanted me to take a look at you but after looking at you chart, I think you're good to go." The he pulled the heart monitor in view and said "I'm just going to check one thing, watch has the monitor". He then pressed my neck and and the monitor went flat. When he released his hand, my heart forgot to start back up as the nurse came busting into the room. Dr Chesnie waved her off and my heart had restarted but the pause was a bit too long. Dr Chesnie recommended that I have a pacemaker implanted. From this point he really showed his character and compassion. He explained everything and then said, "Talk it over with your doctor and let me know what you want to do". No pressure, no panic, just solid reason. I spent the next day talking with my doctor, and several friends who were also physicians. The consensus was yes, a pacer makes sense so Dr Chesnie became my new heart Doc! I stayed back East for a few more years and saw a cardio back there. What a factory. As soon as I came back, I called and scheduled with Dr Chesnie and have been with him since. Most recently I screwed up and ran out of blood pressure meds and my BP got out of whack. My GP added a new med and over the weekend I wasn't doing great and ended up in the ER. I was scheduled to see Dr Chesnie later in the month but low and behold I get a phone call from the office to see if I could come in that afternoon. Perfect timing. Got checked out by Dr Chesnie but the best part is you sit with him in the comfort of his personal office and discuss the plan moving forward. My husband had a heart attack four years ago and since then he's been undergoing clinical monitoring of his cardiac status on a regular basis, according to the ACC/AHA Cardiology Guidelines. He used to go to UCLA, but because we live in Orange County, he recently decided to see a doctor in OC. That's how he started seeing Dr. Chesnie. And at his last visit a few months ago he was told by Dr. Chesnie he would have a treadmill stress test done in the doctor's office at his visit on June 22, 2019. This review is written with, and on behalf of, my husband, Mihail D., Dr. Chesnie's patient. The validity of this information can be verified, and facts and documentation will be provided upon request. Here are the facts: After TAKING HALF DAY OFF from work for this appointment, my husband presented to this office for his SCHEDULED treadmill stress test. He found the office empty, with no other patients, however the doctor immediately told him that the test was scheduled "in error" (?!?) because the "insurance company would deny it anyway" (which is MISINFORMATION because when calling a supervisor at the Blue Shield insurance company later that evening, she confirmed that the insurance company would NEVER deny this test to a patient who needs to be regularly monitored, and who hasn't had such a test in two years!!) Additionally, she reviewed the records and confirmed that NO REQUEST FOR A TREADMILL TEST has been placed by this office for my husband, and NO denial of service was EVER issued by the insurance. Baffled, my husband wanted to leave the office and go home, however he was asked to stay for the office staff to take his blood pressure (why?!? his BP has always been normal!) Maybe this was just to be able to CHARGE the insurance for an unnecessary BP measurement (while other CV parameters that truly needed to be performed, and scheduled to take place at this visit, WEREN'T?!?) For clarification, NO other medical activity took place in this office at this visit that would be of any medical benefit to my husband in order to monitor his heart condition. But my husband had to pay $40 copay for .... nothing! And the insurance got charged for an "appointment", when there wasn't any... Shockingly, NO ONE IN THIS OFFICE WAS WEARING MASKS in order to protect my husband, who is 64 y old and has other risk factors that place him in the HIGHEST RISK CATEGORY for the ongoing pandemic. Even when taking his blood pressure and approaching him within inches, the office staff WERE NOT WEARING FACE COVERINGS TO PROTECT MY HUSBAND, although this is the rule in CA since Gov. Newsom ordered all Californians to wear face coverings while in public or high-risk settings, including when shopping, taking public transit, or seeking medical care (which was the case here): https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-06-18/california-mandatory-face-masks-statewide-order-coronavirus-gavin-newsom?_amp=true If the office staff doesn't "like" to wear masks, they should abide by the existing rules by wearing face shields, or by hiring new staff who can understand and follow regulations. All of the above behavior displayed by this office is incredibly sloppy, careless, and disrespectful of their patient's time, cardiovascular condition, and risk factors for Covid19. This practice should also KEEP THEIR WORD towards patients and perform necessary, life saving tests, for their patients whose lives depend on appropriate cardiovascular monitoring. Additionally, this office either doesn't understand or doesn't care how to protect their high risk patients from Covid-19 transmission, although there are mandatory orders in place, given by our governor. They either forgot or simply don't care that, when one becomes a doctor, they need to abide by the HIPPOCRATIC OATH of "primum non nocere" ("first do no harm"). So to recap the experience with this office: NO life-saving stress test, NOT keeping their promise towards their patient, NO medical care or advice offered, NO face coverings, but "YES" to charging the insurance and my husband $$$ for an unnecessary test (BP), that could have been done at home!! Looks like making a profit is ALL THAT MATTERS in this office. No wonder there are so many others who have noticed similar behaviors in this office. Update 06/28/20: to further confirm our concerns about this practice, the office FOUND TIME to immediately respond to our review on social media and discredit us, but they DID NOT FIND TIME to call or email my husband (they have both our phone and email info!!) and apologize for their embarrassing mishandling of this situation, or offer him to return for a real appointment. Greetings Yelper's, I would like to utilize this forum to share my personal experiences with Dr. Brian Chesnie and his practice. I have read, with interest, the majority of reviews on this site and I agree with many of them. After being a patient of Dr. Chesnie's for over 22 years: (A) I am still alive, and (B) I have never received any negative or unprofessional treatment by either his staff, or by him personally--ever. I am, of course not attempting to devalue any unpopular views (minus one), and I am simply expressing that I personally have never experienced (in 22 years) what has been unenthusiastically expressed in a few posts. Now, with that being said..... will Dr. Chesnie (when required) be frank, direct and in some cases, curt in order to express his sincere, and extremely experienced professional opinion to a patient who, under the circumstances, doesn't want to hear or psychologically ready to handle? Yes, he will. It is my experience; however, that Dr. Chesnie's standard bed-side manner is that of calm, genuine interest and care. He projects confidence and has a pleasant baseline demeanor. He is a true healer. He will tenaciously seek out the best course of action for those under his care. He will actively listen to his patients and will provide honest feedback in return. Isn't that what we as patients should want and expect from our physicians? If the scary truth is not what you would like to hear, and you would rather be placated as to not shake your fragile sensibilities concerning the frailty of your condition, then seek out a physician who has turned his back on the Hippocratic Oath (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippocratic_Oath) that all doctor's take prior to receiving their licensure: Doctor Chesnie is an amazing physician and is empirically skilled in his profession. He personally saved the life of my then young wife who had developed a (rare for her age) electrophysiological cardiac condition that baffled many a skilled physician. After taking the time to thoroughly examine her and by not ruling out the condition simply based on her youth, he diagnosed the accurate condition when other physicians ignored it due to a conventional accepted stereotype (age). When one comes to seeing Dr. Chesnie, you are immediately accepted as a potential life patient, which then naturally matures into a long friendship akin to a distant relative. You know the one I'm talking about? The Uncle that you rarely see (except on holiday's) but you absolutely know will have your back in a time of crisis. That is Dr. Brian Chesnie. In closing, and as is indicated on the forward of his webpage, Dr. Chesnie's practice does it's very best to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. He and his office staff, strive to instill feelings of calm, security and trust in all their current and prospective patients. BAD HORRIBLE ANXIETY PROVOKING EXPERIENCE WITH DR. CHESNIE! MOVED HERE FROM EAST COAST NEEDED A CARDIOLOGIST FOR MY HIGH CHOLESTEROL AND TO GET AN EKG for clearance for surgery on Sept. 9th. Had an appt. for the Wed., Sept. 4th with Dr. Chesnie at 12:30pm. I got lost due to Siri and his Receptionist called me on my cell as I was driving, yelling at me that if I did not get there by 12:45pm the doctor would be leaving and I would have to get rescheduled. I was lost, just a mile away and called (Vicki) back and she rudely snapped at me saying, " Dr. Chesnie had to leave and could not wait for another minute!" I was stunned that she was so curt and as a result I had to cancel my carpal tunnel surgery! Then I called back to get another appointment for the following week for an EKG and the doctor's clearance and made another appointment for today at 12:30pm. Due to a slight delay because of traffic, I was in the car just a mile away when I picked up my cell phone and again Vicki yelled," Either you are here by 12:45 or the doctor must leave and he can not see you." I made it to the office at 12:44pm and there was Dr. Chesnie and his wife Vicki glaring at me from behind the reception desk, standing and she said," It's too late now, we can only do the EKG, but can not and will not give your hand surgeon the clearance for your surgery, because you were (14 min.) late for your appt. You need to go to another doctor!" I left stunned that a doctor could be so MEAN, CONDESCENDING AND UNPROFESSIONAL as he stood there with his receptionist scolding me and not recognizing the urgency and importance in providing clearance for my surgery for the second time! He then told me to leave. As a result, I had to cancel my much needed carpal tunnel surgery AGAIN! You might want to take my experience to heart and STAY AWAY FROM "Dr. Chesnie " and do not even book a first visit, a second visit or any visit! There are plenty of excellent cardiologists in this area and I was fooled by his website's portrayal of such a caring doctor and such a caring staff. I was fooled by his website and saw and heard the REAL Dr. Chesnie! Haven't we all sat in waiting rooms for doctors for an hour, maybe two? Well, I didn't deserve the condescending, rude and confrontational treatment by this doctor and his receptionist for bein 14 minutes late and a mile away! I've been a heart patient of Dr. Chesnie for over 24 years. He is my life-coach, directing and motivating me to better health. As a result, at age 85, I comfortably walk 3 miles at least 4 times a week, and have blood pressure levels well within optimal range. I never wait more than 3 minutes in his office to see him. Dr. Chesnie has completely put my anxiety and fears to rest regarding an AFib occurrence I had 01/26/21. I have never had AFib before and my anxiety was through the roof! He is a great, compassionate, and very knowledgeable Dr, just simply the best! He conducted tests regarding my heart and confirmed it was healthy and adjusted my Hypertension meds to get my blood pressure lowered and one of them will even help with AFib if I have anymore occurrences. Not sure what's up with this Dr. but he moves his office quite frequently. I called around to find a Dr. & when I called this office, they said they included an EKG in their initial visit rate. Well, that turns out NOT to be true. My bill was NOT what was quoted over the phone and of course when the insurance company looked into it, they deny, deny, deny. In addition, when I went in for my exam the EQUIPTMENT WAS BROKEN, confirmed by PA doing the exam, as she got a little frustrated retesting & again by the DR. when I asked what my "readings were", prior to leaving the office. After a EKG, echocardiogram and stress test. It was suggested that I do a full blood panel and see how everything else is working. After the medical records incident, the TERRIBLE second appt. and no fit for duty does anybody really think I would have seen him again to be further traumatized. I think not. This is the OC, there are a ton of highly qualified cardiologists. Your response is laughable. It seems you either intentionally treated me extremely poorly to get rid of me or you plain out lied in your response because the illogical conversation you describe about asking me to leave your practice, not being a match, etc. ABSOLUTELY NEVER happened! As for you comments about Yelp's policy of hiding your positive reviews, it's clear they are conspiring against you (not). You're just digging your hole deeper.
